Little things for the house that make life easier - I’m doing a shop

Right. I’m getting my act together. As I once again realised we’d run out of little clippy things for reasealing food packaging, it also occurs to me I keep meaning to buy an extra long iPhone cable so I can use my phone when it’s charging in the living room (I can rest it on the table but can’t look at it while sat on the sofa which is pissing irritating and means I’m constantly on 3% battery). I do try and avoid amazon so as not to help Jeff Bezos and his sickening wealth but sod it, I’m going to sit down this afternoon and do an Amazon shop for all those little things that make life easier but I never get around to buying. Basically all the stuff my mum used to go to Woolies for when I was little Sad (RIP Woolies, gone but not forgotten)

So far my list is:
Kitchen clips
Extra long iPhone cable
Lighters - if I can buy them online? (I don’t smoke but I’m a candle obsessive and I am always running out of long matches)
An oven liner, threw mine away a couple of months ago as it was rank and now I need to clean the oven base instead which is much harder than running the liner through the dishwasher - sigh

Please could you suggest other things I need but can’t think of right this second? Much appreciated Grin

@JumpLeadsForTwo not quite what I envisioned but would do the job thank you

@sueelleker and @SunshineCake
thanks to you both too I will give both consideration

Love that they're washable

@SunshineCake the lid is shallower and I find works better for things like chips.

I've tried teatowels they get damp even wet quite quickly and end up wrecked

buckeejit · 31/12/2020 22:41

Used Pyrex roasting fish for sausages this eve & its great! I'd love a long thin one to go beside the roasting dish on the same shelf.

I highly recommend a lazy Susan for condiments. Also I moved our bread from the bread Bin to one of the deep drawers & its so much easier to manage the bread section!

Also for shorter shelves, I fill shallow baskets & label the shelf. Dymo embossing labeller is fabulous.

And, get kick drawers in the kitchen - extra space for rarely used things is great.

I was envisaging a pan lid wobbling on its handle. Is it a flat dish lid in actuality?Blush.

@Hollyknickers
A big jug, big bottle of water, soap and towel, baby wipes and bags, in the car, then you will never worry about finding a loo again. As long as your car is nearby. Oh a long coat too so you can do it surreptitiously in the back seat. Only for wees though.

WTF??!!

@QuestionableMouse

I live alone so a back scratcher is wonderful! No more struggling with a fork. 😂😂
. Fully agree! I don't live alone but am alone a lot of the time so a backscratcher for me was an amazing purchase! I got this one but after about three years it completely fell apart so I'm now looking for a better replacement.

I buy one massive roll of brown wrapping paper the. Have lots of silicone stamps and ink so one roll is for all occasions.

OrangeDino · 01/01/2021 09:33

I now have a very long list of things to buy thanks to this thread! I've just spotted pyrex on offer on the Brandalley website and have gone crazy and bought myself a box of it! (I only opened the email to delete and unsubscribe - whoops!).
Offer says it ends today: www.brandalley.co.uk/home/sales/prep-like-a-boss-1.html

Deux · 01/01/2021 12:20

@Knittingnanny how did you get on with your rubber broom? I’m tempted to get one based on the love on this thread.

I’ve thought of something else that’s been really useful for storing mops, longhandled dusters and the like. These individual mop holders. I’ve used them in my under stairs cupboard and on the inside of the door as I didn’t have the room for a fixed rack. www.amazon.co.uk/nuosen-Mounted-Adhesive-Bathroom-Organizer/dp/B07NWGJHCX/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=mop+holder+self+adhesive&sprefix=mop+holder&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1609503409&sr=8-5

MerryChristmasToYou · 01/01/2021 16:37

@SimonJT

A knife sharpener and actually use it once a week so you don’t have to hack through onions.

100 pairs of nail clippers, they go missing forever everytime you use them.

I use a magnet in a little box that I keep the nail clippers and tweezers in.
Thegreatestprancer · 01/01/2021 16:51

I have got the Joseph Joseph knife block and it’s fantastic. If you’re thinking of getting it you won’t be disappointed. Was only £10.80 in the Black Friday sale but I see offers on Amazon.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2021 16:51

I'm very late to the party on this one, but dd have me a hair turban towel for Christmas and it's definitely made my life easier!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/01/2021 16:51

Gave

ItsNotNormalLove · 01/01/2021 18:25

@QuestionableMouse thank you, I've added it to my (giant!) basket Grin

Cocolapew · 01/01/2021 19:07

Anyone struggling with hairy dogs or cats I can recommend the Groomi, it's amazing.
I bought a plug and usb cube from B&M and think I'm ever so fancy now.

Knittingnanny · 01/01/2021 19:39

Deux, the handheld brush is brilliant on the stairs, the pet one has got all of the cat hairs off her bed before going in the wash , not tried out the long broom yet. So good so far

invisibleoldwoman · 01/01/2021 21:59

@Disneyblue

Anyone know of good silicone baking tray liners? Preferably ones I can cut to size and can be put in the dishwasher?

Also can you get a hand held rubber brush? Our cat likes to sleep under the bed!

Lakeland do rolls of the tray liners you can cut to size. Search for Lakeland magic carpet. Excellent product.
Carriemac · 01/01/2021 22:32

Rubber oven edging to stop you burning yourself on the racks*
Where would I get this ? Fab idea

ZebraGiraffeHippo · 01/01/2021 22:50

@TheOneTheOnlyPedroPony

Wahhh everyone is talking about drawers in the kitchen and I am about to move from a house with 3 normal and 6 deep drawers in an island to a new build with 5 drawers in total. It's literally the main thing I'll miss about this house!!
I converted some of my kitchen cupboards to drawers using these (lots of different sizes on amazon or eBay) www.amazon.co.uk/KuKoo-Kitchen-Baskets-Cabinet-Storage/dp/B01N6GRLRG/ref=pd_rhf_dp_s_xc_sdp_dp_0_2/259-7946270-4036332?psc=1&pf_rd_p=9a0654be-b146-49fa-a335-669c36f82f34&_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_wg=1Nper&pf_rd_r=7Q12EJ78PC3B88SP89SC&pd_rd_i=B01N6GRLRG&pd_rd_w=7aVuB&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&refRID=7Q12EJ78PC3B88SP89SC&pd_rd_r=c6bcdf94-aa22-4a76-b690-5853d763fb55

Gives me much more usable storage space.

farnworth · 02/01/2021 08:10

Lots of great ideas, thank you, have put in more amazon orders,...
I loved the idea of the fabric storage bags on Etsy, but wanted quite a few ( one for gloves, one for hats etc......) so have instead ordered lots of plain ones really cheaply from
www.thecleverbaggers.co.uk/
And will label them all with a fabric pen. That will make me feel very organised!

Edel2019 · 02/01/2021 09:46

Can I just say, because of this thread, I bought a toast tongs and the electric candle lighter.....and they are.....

AMAZING

Parker231 · 02/01/2021 10:04

These threads are brilliant but dangerous - I could end up spending a fortune!
We’re moving country as soon as travel restrictions are lifted so don’t want to buy more stuff at the moment but have saved all the ideas - thank you
