Dh big birthday coming up, would love to book a little break for us both. (Let's pretend covid has fucked off). UK or Europe, nothing adventurous. Cheers

Prague is lovely.

RudolphtheRemaindeer · 26/12/2020 20:24

We're planning on something similar OP, once corona has fucked off, and we're looking at Berlin for 3/4 nights. I went once before the Wall came down and have been desperate to go back again one day. DH has never been.

Ditzyduck · 26/12/2020 20:26

Barcelona, especially if you fancy a bit of winter sun. We went last January and it was nice having a bit of cool sun for a few days, (late teens) whilst it was snowing in the uk. We want to go back.

OrangeGinLemonFanta · 26/12/2020 20:28

Berlin is fab, I went there 7 years ago when I was pregnant with DD. I'd like to go back some day. Rome is lovely out of peak season, nice mild weather too. Apparently hideously hot and busy in the summer.

StopMakingATitOfUrselfNPissOff · 26/12/2020 21:08

Bath is lovely

BikeRunSki · 26/12/2020 21:09

I really liked Copenhagen.

HannibalHayes · 26/12/2020 21:10

Erm, what do you like? What interests? Where have you been? What kind of budget do you have? When are you thinking of?

Hairydilemma · 26/12/2020 21:16

Florence, Valencia, Seville, Rome?

Or closer to home, Brighton, Southwold, Aldeburgh?

Moooooooooooooooooo · 26/12/2020 21:26

Gibraltar has no restrictions for tourists atm during covid.

HannibalHayes · 26/12/2020 21:27

@Moooooooooooooooooo

Gibraltar has no restrictions for tourists atm during covid.
But you'll need to show your passport to go there, because they've just joined Shengen!
Moooooooooooooooooo · 27/12/2020 13:15

But you have always needed to show your passport wherever in the world you’ve gone (unless travelling with England, Scotland and Wales - not too sure about Ireland as I’ve never been there) so having to show it is no different to anywhere else, surely? What’s the problem?

nosswith · 27/12/2020 13:56

Canvey Island.

nosswith · 27/12/2020 13:58

The reason I put that was that I'd urge you to have a holiday in the UK somewhere, once restrictions are over, to give business to the hospitality trade that has been badly hit.

Where would depend on your interests.

bert3400 · 27/12/2020 14:02

I live an hour from Valencia and it is beautiful. So much to do . It's not as crazy as Barcelona but still as so much charm and warmth . The winter temps are around 20-22 , chilly at night .

Soutiner · 27/12/2020 14:05

I second Prague. Avoid the stag and hen do places and enjoy the food, the architecture and walks across the bridges and along the river.

Squeejit · 27/12/2020 14:07

I’d be staying in the UK for the time being. Liverpool is a good city break.

yearinyearout · 27/12/2020 14:14

I would recommend Porto. It's a lovely place on the river, you can visit the sherry producers and partake in some tasting. Easy access from the uk and the airport has a metro that takes you right into the centre as well.

Porto is fab! I’d recommend it too.

DaanSaaf · 28/12/2020 09:29

Sorry I'm late back, to answer some questions. We're not big walkers, a city break where we can eat, drink and relax is probably what I'm looking for. Not a luxury budget, definitely under 1000 for a weekend. Don't mind when, obviously will depend on restrictions but want an idea to present to him on his birthday.

@squeejit you're right, it's a fabulous place but not a great birthday present as we're both from here Grin

Thanks everyone

Prague is looking promising, as is Berlin

OP posts:
Squeejit · 28/12/2020 13:13

Haha, yeah maybe don’t present him with a city break in his own town 🤣
Although the way this year’s been....

DaanSaaf · 28/12/2020 15:00

Might be the furthest we get! Grin

We loved Bruges which will fit all your criteria. Stunning architecture, horse and carriage rides, markets, loads of restaurants and shops. Gwent is also beautiful apparently and all reachable easily.

Our friends went to Berlin this summer and said there was a lot of renovation work going on with much scaffolding everywhere and after a while they got fed up with “The Wall“. They liked Berlin and were glad they went but not this summer.

gannett · 28/12/2020 15:29

Porto and Prague are good recommendations. Lisbon too.

Naples is the best city for eating in Europe hands down but I'd also consider Valencia, Bologna and Marseille too.

Berlin is one of my favourite cities in the world but more for the underground party and club scene really.

I'd strongly recommend post-Soviet Eastern Europe - Kiev and Tbilisi are both wonderful cities with very good eating and drinking to be had. Everyone I know who's been to Georgia has fallen in love with the country - not just Tbilisi but the mountains and the wine regions too. And they'll definitely fit into your budget.
