Unexpected Dyson hairdryer -WWYD

My DH bought me quite an expensive handbag which I picked out the week earlier. It’s the first year we’ve done presents this way as normally he picks stuff which is expensive, nice but never quite right. Think make up sets of skin cream sets for the wrong skin type etc. Then as a complete surprise he bought me a dyson hairdryer. I’ve never mentioned them before but he knows I love my Dyson vacuum cleaner. I looked on out Amazon account and he paid £400 for it, everywhere they are £300. I’m really taken aback by this expensive gift and am tempted to ask him to return it, or I can physically do it. We can afford the hairdryer but I really don’t need it and am not sure if I want it?
Sorry if this post is insensitive to people struggling financially this year.

If you can afford it I would accept the gift in the spirit it was intended and learn to love it.

Hwory · 26/12/2020 12:56

I would return it just for being over charged by Amazon.

SmallChrismas · 26/12/2020 13:00

Thank you to both of you. That was my thought regarding Amazon.

It's a great hairdryer - my hair used to take 20 minutes to dry, now takes 4

Saved myself hours this year Grin

MrDarcysMa · 26/12/2020 13:04

I'd return it then buy it back for £300 tbh just out of principle

SmallChrismas · 26/12/2020 13:08

Thanks, I’m weighing up whether it’s worth mentioning to him its £100 cheaper elsewhere or just trying to forget he got a bit ripped off and enjoy the present.

Someaddedsugar · 26/12/2020 13:11

I’d just say you absolutely love it but wanted to double check if he got the best deal and if not ask h8m to re-order elsewhere and return yours to Amazon.

It might be worth checking the warranty too if you bought from Amazon and not an official Dyson stockist.

SmallChrismas · 26/12/2020 13:13

I may say I just got an email from such and such shop and the hairdryer is in the sales for £300.

The poor man! He can never bloody please you, can he? You've got hair, haven't you? Just say thank you for the lovely hair dryer and use it. Keep your thoughts on the money to yourself or you could hurt his feelings.

SmallChrismas · 26/12/2020 13:24

I know, I know, that’s why I posted.

I have one, no I have the air wrap but it also has a hair dryer.

If you don’t want it I would definitely ask if you can exchange it. It’s a lot of money which could go towards something you love! I once got my DH some trainers - I thought he would love them but he didn’t and asked if he could return them. I was a little bit hurt but it made sense!

Totally agree

Who looks up the price of gifts Xmas day/Boxing Day and considers telling the gifter to return it as they could have got it cheaper elsewhere 🤷‍♀️

he's a big boy and presumably could have price checked himself and if he can afford to be overcharged let him get on with it

I'd be mortified and pissed off if DH said he'd done this with his gifts

But someone will be along to say to LTB soon

Orf1abc · 26/12/2020 13:35

Amazon don't sell the Dyson hairdryer themselves, they're all 'fulfilled by', so I'd be concerned that what you have might be fake. Not sure how to phrase that to your husband though!

PawPawNoodle · 26/12/2020 13:37

I wouldn't have looked on the account but since you have, Id return it and buy it elsewhere, such as Boots where you'll get a zillion points on your advantage card.

It's a really fantastic hairdryer by the way, I love mine.

SmallChrismas · 26/12/2020 13:43

I like the sound of getting lots of Boots points.

Personally I'm a big fan of returning overpriced things and buying them in the sales. Maybe you could make a treat to him of the £100 saved?

dontgobaconmyheart · 26/12/2020 13:50

Virtually everything will be cheaper today than it was in the run up to xmas to be fair. That doesn't mean anyone was overcharged. Ultimately it takes two seconds to google 'dyson hairdryer' and see on that same search page what it costs as a general rule and where is cheapest. That's down to your DP, not Amazon. Amazon have vast numbers of private sellers who set their own prices too.

That aside I'd probably just return it. I have one and would get the money back if I could. It's a decent hairdryer and I like that it's fairly quiet but nothing special and certainly not worth the money. My last one did not far off the same job for £50. If anything the dyson one has left my hair in worse condition, it seems to tangle it and if I use the high heat and power (aka the only setting that means it dries it faster than any other dryer I've owned) it leaves it tangled and feeling dry.

Can I ask how? I have one and it really hasn't made a difference to my hair drying time at all which is the reason I got it as I have long thick hair so still expect it to take time but it takes me the same amount of time as the gym hairdryer so am I drying my hair wrong? 🙈
Heyahun · 26/12/2020 16:48

Wow you get a gift then snoop to find out where he bought it and how much he spent? Your poor husband - he shouldn’t bother in future

lockdownrainbow · 26/12/2020 17:03

Great pressy

SmallChrismas · 26/12/2020 17:03

He told me it was from Amazon and yes I did snoop as I was curious how much it cost. The whole thing was a surprise as I’ve never ever mentioned wanting a Dyson hairdryer. I’m very happy with the normal one he bought me last Christmas and a new (life changing) curler I purchased a couple of months ago. £400 is a lot of money to spend on something o don’t even know if I want and certainly something I don’t need.

OP posts:
CommanderBurnham · 26/12/2020 17:08

Firstly, give yourself permission to keep the gift.
I find this hard to do but once you do, you'll actually feel loved, and that is the true purpose of the present.

BUT, as you obviously aren't a waster of money, which is a good thing, there's no reason to mention that you love it but you'd love it even more if you're OH wasn't ripped off, and say you'd like to spend the money on a treat for you both.

SmallChrismas · 26/12/2020 17:10

CommanderBurnham thank you for that, very good advice.

OP posts:
Someaddedsugar · 26/12/2020 17:30

And remember to check the warranty as you get a 2 year one with Dyson

AliceinBunniland · 26/12/2020 17:35

I think you should just be grateful for the gift unless you absolutely have no use for a hairdryer at all
