Unexpected Dyson hairdryer -WWYD

My DH bought me quite an expensive handbag which I picked out the week earlier. It’s the first year we’ve done presents this way as normally he picks stuff which is expensive, nice but never quite right. Think make up sets of skin cream sets for the wrong skin type etc. Then as a complete surprise he bought me a dyson hairdryer. I’ve never mentioned them before but he knows I love my Dyson vacuum cleaner. I looked on out Amazon account and he paid £400 for it, everywhere they are £300. I’m really taken aback by this expensive gift and am tempted to ask him to return it, or I can physically do it. We can afford the hairdryer but I really don’t need it and am not sure if I want it?
Sorry if this post is insensitive to people struggling financially this year.

A Dyson hairdryer is expensive enough without Amazon bumping up the price to the tune of 25%. If you return it then purchase elsewhere, then that’s £100 left to do something nice for both of you with. It is a brilliant hairdryer, couldn’t be without mine. Your DH gets a gold star for such brilliant gifts OP.

He should have bought it from John Lewis or a UK shop! Why use Amazon, are they not rich enough and big enough tax dodgers already?

I got a dyson hairdryer from my boyfriend our first Christmas together as I'd borrowed his mums and mentioned I liked using it. Like you I was a bit "meh" about it- would rather have a couple more personal cheaper gifts BUT I absolutely love it and would never go back to a "normal" hairdryer now

Christmas present panic I think. We went shopping the week before Christmas, I chose a bag that’s more expensive than something I would normally pick. I felt quite guilty about that but he seemed happy. I thought that was me sorted or perhaps he’d buy something like a box of smellies or chocolates as a little extra. So I was really shocked to them open the hairdryer present. I couldn’t help myself with looking how much it cost.

I know it’s a first world non problem.

If you know it's way cheaper you could suggest he return it and you rebuy with boots points or something and suggest with the £100 saving you have a nice date (at home of course) or spend on something or both of you

I got one as a gift, and wanted to return it as I thought it was way too expensive. My husband refused, he wanted me too keep it and said he bought it for me as I would never buy it myself. Now I absolutely love it. My hair used to take 20 min or more to dry but now it takes 2 minutes. However, if it’s £100 cheaper I would return it and spend the £100 on a nice dinner for both of you.

There’s always one, isn’t there 🙄

@SmallChrismas

I like the sound of getting lots of Boots points.
I think its about £40 worth of boots points for the dryer at £300 at the moment.

Honestly it's a good hairdryer, I feel like a Dyson rep now but it is worth every penny (in my view).

SmallChrismas · 27/12/2020 10:27

So here’s a little update. I mentioned to my DH that’s Boots are doing a good offer where if you buy a personal grooming electrical appliance you get loads of points and the hairdryer seems to be in the sale. He thought it sounded a good plan to send the other one back, he saves £100 minus the delivery charge and I get 4,200 points.
I do think this present dilemma (self inflicted I know) was more than about the £100 difference, it was about me accepting an expensive gift. I always buy myself nearly the cheapest or the cheapest of everything even though I don’t need to do this.
Thank you everyone.

Glad you've sorted it and form
Yourselves a win win! Enjoy the hairdryer, I have the air wrap and love it.
