Did covid shape any of your gift giving this year?

I gave (and received!) lots of nice handcream this year.

We bought DS a football goal, and a mini indoor softplay set for the DC to share, thinking both would help with exercise if we get locked down again.

I bought DH a face covering, so for that one yes Grin

FleeceNavidadToEwe · 25/12/2020 22:51

No, I don’t think so.
Any lockdown essentials we bought in April, and I didn’t want any reminders of the virus today.

umpteennamechanges · 25/12/2020 22:55

I got a scarf thing that you can pull up to be a mask and also a lot of things to have a home spa evening (we go into Tier 4 tomorrow).

We're also totally skint (like beyond skint having both lost jobs) and PILs got us a voucher for a month's groceries from Waitrose.

I realise that's very MN!

KitKatastrophe · 25/12/2020 22:55

Nope, I dont think any of my gifts were relevant to covid in any way.

Did he appreciate it?
InTheNightWeWillWish · 25/12/2020 22:57

I guess so I. The sense we tried to be more conscious of where we spend, rather than relying on amazon. We tried to use small independent stores for some of our gifts. So I arranged for a hamper from a deli local to the recipient (but 200 miles away from me). For some local businesses near us that would ship the gifts to our families, we used those. We tried to think of more thoughtful gifts for families we haven’t seen in a while. We also made a point of supporting the high street when we could get out, which meant buying some presents quite a while ago.

In terms of face masks, hand cream, toilet roll - no, we didn’t give any gifts relating to those.

TheLifeAndDeathBrigade · 25/12/2020 22:59

Ha, I hadn't really considered that anyone would think of gifting toilet roll Grin

Yes, gave money instead of going out to buy. Cannot cope with choosing online and so gave more money than would usually spend because this year I haven't travelled to meet and so thought it would be a nice surprise for people. ( I'm the one who always travels to them.)

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 25/12/2020 23:07

The children had a mask each and a covid door opener

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 25/12/2020 23:07

I got hand cream from potential son in law

But i used that all the time anyway

DelurkingAJ · 25/12/2020 23:10

I got a splendid home sewn Xmas face mask from and old friend. We probably spent slightly more on the DC as we didn’t eg go to the panto.

HarrietSchulenberg · 25/12/2020 23:12

I made face masks for everyone. Other than that, no, not really.

Bloody hell.
purplecorkheart · 25/12/2020 23:15

I bought all my gifts from small businesses. Other years I would mean to but would leave it to the last minute and end up buying from Amazon. This year I made a conscious effort to buy from small independent businesses!

BalaamsAss · 25/12/2020 23:15

I bought DH a new personalised clock for his study now that he is working from home long term. I also bought him some more clothes for the same reason - no more suits!

The teenage DC were given money rather than vouchers because givers were worried about shops going under and vouchers being useless.

Gertie75 · 25/12/2020 23:16

I spent a lot less, I knew what I wanted to buy so did the majority online and it stopped the impulse buys that last year I spent a fortune on.

I purposely bought less toys for my dd's too, during lockdown I realised how little they played with a lot of them, this year has definitely made me much less materialistic.

HelplessProcrastinator · 25/12/2020 23:18

I spent a bit more and some of the gifts I received were a higher value than I usual get from those individuals. Avoided Amazon and bought from physical shops were possible. No COVID influenced items though.

Copperblack · 25/12/2020 23:18

We didn’t buy any perfume or aftershave as no one is going to be near enough to smell it! I got a signed band poster which probably wouldn’t have happened pre pandemic- the band have been relying on merchandise due to no gigs. I bought my DH a fancy lunchbox and flask as there is no canteen in his office at the moment. So yes!

Choconuttolata · 25/12/2020 23:19

Yes because DH tested covid positive today and was too unwell to join in gift giving so kind of upset the usual process.

Also I bought my mother a gift card for an activity you can do outdoors and my father something to keep his mind active whilst shielding.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 25/12/2020 23:23

Yes, I usually buy theatre tickets for one person and didn't this year. Tried to support local businesses where possible. No masks, handgel or similar though.

dingoesatemybaby · 25/12/2020 23:28

@bellagogosdead Yea he did. He was talking about getting a more interesting one as he just has the plain black ones, so I got him one with guitars on.

ScubaSteven · 25/12/2020 23:30

I bought more for the DC, since they can't have friends to play they can at least have new toys to open and games to play when the going gets tough.

I gave lots of vouchers this year, I didn't want to risk going round busy shops, I never usually buy vouchers. I also shopped online more.

Can I just point out that wasn't his ONLY gift!!!

I'm not sure why people are so shocked by this Confused

ellenleaves · 25/12/2020 23:31

I bought a face mask for a stocking! Plus more than us usual as normally our main gift is an experience.

Dazedandconfused10 · 25/12/2020 23:37

All my gifts were activities for people do to in the next loxkdown Grin
