If you’ve ever had a tooth out how painful was it afterwards?

Have had truly awful tooth pain for a few days nothing would help. Dentist took the offending tooth out (lower molar) was a tricky removal but all came out ok.
It’s numb at the moment and I’m wondering what to expect when i get the feeling back. Wondering if it’s going to be as bad as it was or more of a bearable pain that painkillers will help with

I had all 4 wisdom teeth taken out at once a few years ago. The pain from the teeth passed in around a week or two. I had codeine and co-codamol which I found better than paracetamol and ibuprofen (not at the same time!)

I will give you a food tip: rice seems like a good idea. It isn’t. It’s a terrible idea. It will get stuck in the hole and you will end up rinsing and rinsing with salt water to get rid of it. Don’t eat rice!

I have had all wisdom teeth out, the swelling lasted 2-3 days and the pain about a week. I was given antibiotics, painkillers and arnica to take.

Matchsticklady · 25/12/2020 05:52

Thanks all. I took one paracetamol and codeine before bed because the other dose hadn’t worn off and you can only take 8 in twenty four hours but woke up with toothache (well gum ache!) at 3 so took another. Just woke up again as the one codeine doesn’t seem to have worked so have taken an ibuprofen and next time will take two codiene when i can, although that will mean I’m either in pain during Christmas Day or night as I’ve only got four caplets left to take

It seems like two of those bad boys totally sorts the pain so lesson learned there.

It’s not terrible pain though it’s quite sore and achey but nothing like it was before I had the tooth out now

I’m trying not to obsess over the socket anymore as it looks so weird, sort of sunken now and I keep panicking that means it’s dry! I’m really nervous about using the salt water but can do that after 2pm today so will do that and just hold it in my mouth rather than swishing - is it likely to hurt when I do it?

I had all my wisdom teeth removed under a GA and it was just the inside of my cheek that stung afterwards (it was stitched as the teeth were impacted) but I was able to eat the same evening. I was expecting far worse so very pleasantly surprised.

Hopefully all will go well for you.

marvelousmadmadammim · 25/12/2020 06:02

Less that the toothache prior

Matchsticklady · 25/12/2020 06:28

Yes it does seem to hurt less than the toothache prior thank god. After ibuprofen it’s more a sore, tender ache in the gum and a bit in my jaw probably because it took so long to get out.

I’m not really sure what to try and eat today to avoid dislodging the clot, I’m finding it really stressful!

I had a molar extracted 4 weeks ago. It’s just about better now. I had a really bad extraction though - the dentist said that most are much less traumatic! I highly recommend alternating Cocodamol with ibuprofen, but not for too many days. After about a week I changed the cocodamol to paracetamol. Also try an ice pack on your face. Rinsing with salt water doesn’t hurt. Dry socket tends to happen 3 or 4 days afterwards rather than straight away. Believe me you will know that you have it!! If you do get dry socket the dentist can dress it which relieves the pain. To be honest I would just go easy on food today and for the next few days- just eat soft things on the other side of your mouth & rinse with salt water afterwards. Sending virtual hugs as it’s hideous.

OverTheRainbow88 · 25/12/2020 07:35

Avoid hot drinks for 48 hours as well.

Blufandango · 25/12/2020 09:37

When I've had teeth out I've found that sausages and potato wedges have been good to eat because its firm enough to not mush in your mouth but you don't have to chew too much. If you avoid gravy, mash and stuffing (and custard) you might be OK with dinner today, just eat on the other side. Chocolate should be OK too, no nuts because the bits go everywhere. The salt water might sting but it shouldn't hurt too much.

madcatladyforever · 25/12/2020 09:39

Only painful if you get dry socket, I recently had a tooth out and it wasn't painful at all. But you'll get dry socket if you are a smoker. The pain makes you want to pull your own eyes out.

Matchsticklady · 25/12/2020 09:52

Not a smoker thankfully! I didn’t realise mashed foods were worse @Blufandango I was going to try and eat a bit of Christmas dinner veg which will be soft, some of that is mashed carrot and swede but is that one to avoid?
I had mashed sweet potato last night and it seemed ok but I kept it on the other side of my mouth so it didn’t get stuck in the crater

Such a shame we are going to have so much food waste as we already had enough for family when it was allowed then went into tier 4 and now it’s just DH who can eat it mainly. Wonder if we can freeze some.

I had a tooth out in august due to an infection that wouldn’t clear up in the gum, I was on pain killers for a couple of weeks . Get well soon . Flowers

Blufandango · 25/12/2020 10:13

Its great that you managed it last night and if it was OK then of course try it today. If you can keep it on the other side of your mouth then you should be fine, I know plenty of people who do eat mashed food after getting a tooth out, I've just always gone for firmer food which you can control, to some extent. It isn't the end of the world if it goes in your gap, you just have to avoid trying to rinse it out too firmly for a couple of days. I was terrified of my first extraction going wrong but by my third I was much more relaxed. Once you can clean your teeth and use the salt you'll start to relax a bit, hopefully.

Blufandango · 25/12/2020 10:15

ps - I often freeze chopped raw vegetables, its always fine. Can't help with meat but I'm sure others can.

chocolatespiders · 25/12/2020 11:00

I also used a baby tooth brush on my other teeth as it felt a bit more delicate

Matchsticklady · 25/12/2020 14:56

Thanks! Managing the soreness with ibuprofen today so I’m hoping that’s a good sign!

I’m having a load of cauliflower cheese for lunch as it’s my favourite and i cannot wait! Hoping that will be a good mix of soft but ok to control.

Going to try a bit of dinner later (we will have it when baby DS is in bed) and see how I get on.

I had a panic earlier as I looked at the clot and it looks different, like it’s shrunk a bit and it deeper and has creamy whiteness to it and panicked it was the start of dry socket but it looks like it might be part of the healing? Hopefully.

See, I said one night and then it'd be a lot better. Glad to hear it.

Aberforthsgoat · 26/12/2020 19:42

Thank you :)
It’s now sore on the inner part of the gun, feels like a cut or a burn (not surprising!) and is a bit achey without painkillers but considering it was a horribly long extraction I’m pretty pleased with that! Just managed a mashed up mince pie with cream - I swear it actually tastes nicer that way for some reason!

Aberforthsgoat · 26/12/2020 19:43

Oops thought this was my thread! I’ve got a similar one about my tooth extraction too :)

Oldraver · 26/12/2020 19:46

I've had a bottom and top one out several years apart

Both were painful for weeks, I was alteranating co-codomol and codeine/ibuprofen for bloody ages

Lovemusic33 · 26/12/2020 19:57

I have had a few out including my wisdom teeth, pain as always been the worst on the first day, then feels a bit bruised the following day.

Only had one bad one at that was last year, a top one which almost made a hole through to my nose 😬, I felt awful for 24 hours and very bruised for a few days.

Babito · 26/12/2020 20:48

Oh OP !
I had a pretty difficult (infact brutal) failed extraction 3 weeks ago...ended up having to go and have it surgically extracted and that wasn't straightforward either !
I'm now onto the 3rd course of antibiotics.
The pain definetely was less than the horrible pain before it was removed but it has still been very painful and continues to be !
I've been constantly back and forth to the dentist with it was in this week and it is infected had it cleaned out and a biggest fragment of bone extracted to see if that will help it to heal alongside the latest course of antibiotics.
That has helped a little bit its not as sore as it was before i went to the dentist this week but it continues to require regular alternating of ibuprofen and paracetamol but these seem to certainly at least just leave it feeling uncomfortable rather than painful at this stage
I'm hoping by the end of this course of antibiotics it will be closer to the finish line and I can get back to eating normally again !
