If you’ve ever had a tooth out how painful was it afterwards?

Have had truly awful tooth pain for a few days nothing would help. Dentist took the offending tooth out (lower molar) was a tricky removal but all came out ok.
It’s numb at the moment and I’m wondering what to expect when i get the feeling back. Wondering if it’s going to be as bad as it was or more of a bearable pain that painkillers will help with

It will be a bit sore unfortunately, particularly if it was tricky, keep on top of the painkillers. With the salt water be very very gentle, try and just hold it in the area rather than swirl. But definitely do the salt water although if you're on antibiotics that will help with any potential infection. Did you need stitches? I did have stitches with mine and I think that was causing a lot of the pain as it was a really difficult extraction. Hope it's better soon.

bumblingbovine49 · 24/12/2020 17:45

I don't have any pain after my wisdom teeth were taken out,.maybe a bit of tenderness.

I had root canal work yesterday and my tooth feels wonderful compared to the pain beforehand . It is a bit sore but really nothing at all compared to before

Matchsticklady · 24/12/2020 17:48

It was a difficult extraction. I’ve just had a look and got a clear blood clot but also looks like there is a little bit of tooth still there! He did say there would be fragments though and they would come out

It’s very painful at the moment but not as bad as it was. Ibuprofen doesn’t seem to have touched it though. I took 400mg about half an hour ago I think that’s the maximum dose but I’ll look it up

Wisdom tooth out once and it was fine - bit sore but that was it. Pulling out the dissolvable stitches also very satisfying 😬

Top tip from me is to be mindful that you may look absolutely fecking hideous immediately afterwards. I was feeling fine on my way out, and smiled reassuringly at a small boy in the waiting room. Got back to the car, quick look in the mirror and realised I had bloody fingerprints all over my face, hair a mess, sagging mouth and a trickle of drool. Poor kid.

mamakoukla · 24/12/2020 17:50

Not pain but I tend to be a bit tender sometimes. If the tooth has been hurting, no pain but sweet relief

Matchsticklady · 24/12/2020 17:59

Tooth was hurting previously so I was hoping for relief but it’s really quite painful now not as sharp as it was and not in my ear and face hopefully it will just be tonight and ease off tomorrow

Everyone is different when it comes to pain I reckon. And there are are other factors at play, like whether it was a difficult extraction. I had a cracked tooth removed a few years ago and the pain after removal was nothing compared to living with the cracked tooth, which was excruciating. I didn't even need painkillers afterwards. I was so upset to learn that my tooth couldn't be saved following a failed root canal, but by the time it was removed I was almost crying with happiness to get rid of it.

When I had a wisdom tooth removed a couple of years later, again I was fine without pain relief afterwards. I'm not saying I wasn't in pain, but it was more of a niggling pain than something unbearable.

Both times, though, the teeth came out very readily.

Matchsticklady · 24/12/2020 18:08

I think I might cry. As if Christmas isn’t bad enough already this year. Ibuprofen hasn’t done anything. I’ve got some paractamol
And codeine combined so I might take that too

Awrite · 24/12/2020 18:36

You have my sympathy op. As I said before, I did cry. However, it was only for one night. Concentrate on that thought.

Matchsticklady · 24/12/2020 23:28

Codeine has relieved the pain but I’m now obsessing over the clot and it being dislodged. It looks like it has sunk a bit and there’s a lighter pink line through it that I don’t think was there before.
Does anyone know what it looks like if you lose part of it? I’m petrified of getting dry socket after the pain I’ve just been in as apparently it’s much much worse.

OP posts:
Blufandango · 24/12/2020 23:43

@Matchsticklady try not to worry too much about what the socket looks like, it will change quite frequently. I've had a few teeth out and was aware of dry socket being a risk but as I understand, you'll know if it happens. For the next few days your mouth will hurt, a chunk of you has been pulled out, its achy and sore. I panicked after my first tooth extraction that the dentist had got the wrong one because the pain in the nearby toots was so bad for a few days. The little bits of tooth that might come out feel a bit weird but no worse than getting popcorn out of your teeth. Use the salt water when its time, and if you are really worried about the clot when your brush your teeth and you have no medical reason not to, you can swallow the first couple of times (although I would use a children's toothpaste if you have one). Food wise, rice got stuck in my gap, and anything too soft risked getting squashed in. A hot water bottle might be nice for your face tonight. Take care, get some sleep and you'll feel better soon.

JimmyTheWeed · 24/12/2020 23:46

It will probably feel a bit sire for a day or two,but compared to a raging toothache,it's nothing! Just be careful you don't develop 'dry socket',because that IS bloody painful. It's usually caused by food debris getting lodged in gap where the tooth was,but can also be caused by smoking or drinking through a straw, just after a tooth extraction.

JimmyTheWeed · 24/12/2020 23:46

Sore not sire!

MrsDThomas · 24/12/2020 23:48

I had 2 lower wisdom teeth out yrs ago and bought yogurts and jelly and angel delight as loads of people told be i would be bruised and not able to eat for days.

The following night i had fish and chips and i was none the worse.

MrsDThomas · 24/12/2020 23:49

Naproxen is good. Better than brufen.

Butterymuffin · 24/12/2020 23:50

I was in pain for a good few days after wisdom tooth extraction but it was better than before. IMO nothing hurts like an actual painful tooth. Take whatever painkillers you have and need to get through.

GymMat · 24/12/2020 23:50

I dunno why but when I had a molar removed it was agony. I even ended up with a black eye. I called my gp and they gave me strong pain killers.i had a killer infection so it was props that.

Hawkmoth · 24/12/2020 23:53

Set alarms for taking your painkillers so hopefully you won't have the wearing off.

I had a tooth out recently and I was on soup for 3 days.

I stayed in bed for two days because it was a horrible extraction, had to have stitches as it broke into bits.

If it's bad tomorrow, call 111 and see if you can get stronger painkillers. I was taking dihydrocodeine, split doses as often as possible.

Then, if you are prone to it, consider the chances of constipation from the opiates and not eating solid food.

zenasfuck · 25/12/2020 00:08

Leave it alone. Don't poke it with your tongue, don't eat on that side, don't eat anything likely to get stuck in the gap like rice
Hold warm salt water in mouth but don't swill or gargle abs don't spit out with any force
The antibiotics will kick in very quickly and the painkillers you have will have a cumulative effect so take them regularly

This time tomorrow you will already be feeling better
Merry Christmas

Lifeisforalimitedperiodonly · 25/12/2020 00:27

I'm in the same position OP. Had a surgical extraction with 4 stitches. Three weeks ago today. I've still got pain but the first 2 weeks were agonising. I probably had dry socket as I could see white which was the bone. I took 16 painkillers a day - ibuprofen and paracetamol every 2 hours. The pain now after 3 weeks is much better. I had a check and dentist said healing well but trauma to the jaw can take up to 6 weeks. Hang on in there OP.

Matchsticklady · 25/12/2020 00:31

Thank you! I’ve been too worried to eat much, had a bit of cheese and some mashed sweet potato.
Was wondering if I’d be able to manage a bit of Christmas dinner tomorrow but didn’t realise dry socket was caused by food debris. My dentist said food would get caught in there but to leave it alone and just gently rinse with saltwater after every meal but only 24 hours after extraction not before

It’s the white bit in the clot that bothers me but he did check it before I left to make sure he was happy that a clot was forming and the white bit has been there since I got home so it’s not a new development

I’ve got paracetamol combined with codeine which seems to be working but you can only take 8 caplets in 24 hours so I might take ibuprofen in between as well

I don’t think I would be as worried if it wasn’t Christmas but the dentist I went to is now closed til next Wednesday

Matchsticklady · 25/12/2020 00:33

Oh my god @Lifeisforalimitedperiodonly how did you cope that sounds awful! Mine wasn’t surgical in the end but it took a bloody long time to get the tooth out and he made a point of saying fragments would rise to the surface and come out (grim)

I’m so relieved the painkillers are working at the moment I hope they continue to

OP posts:
chocolatespiders · 25/12/2020 00:40

I had tooth out this year and had hardly any pain after. I did the salt just gently.
I also ate a lot of baby fruit puree and leek and pot soup.
Don't use a straw for drinks as that cand dislodge clot.

Sarcobaleno · 25/12/2020 00:41

2 wisdom teeth. Absolutely fine. Be careful with what you eat, and maybe saltwater gargles but in my experience not any pain afterwards

QueenPawPaws · 25/12/2020 00:42

Mine was a bit sore after and the fragments coming out my gum was weird but somehow satisfying to get them out! Was fine after maybe 24hrs
I did get dry socket which tasted vile but had no real pain with it, the dentist did HmmConfused face when I said it didn't really hurt
