Her name is Nico, and she’s used for show entertainment by her owner but Christ..

Imagine if she escaped, flew into your house and cried like that at 1am in the morning

Er how often has she been around a crying child to be able to mimic it to such perfection.

And yes I know children cry and have tantrums but ...

staydazzling · 23/12/2020 12:26

oh god that's disturbing, like above says

Soubriquet · 23/12/2020 12:57

I think that breed of parrot is very intelligent and will actually pick things up quickly.

They don’t though! It doesn’t matter how “intelligent” they are!

If you thought intellgence has anything to do with it, corvids (crows, blackbirds) would be the ones mimicking.

The only way to get a bird to mimic is repeated exposure to the to the sound.

RizzleDrizzle · 23/12/2020 13:04

It’s not like a human picking up so each from another human

Corvids can and do mimic sounds. Crows and blackbirds have both been heard doing it.
AlexaPlayWhiteNoise · 23/12/2020 13:12

It is disturbing that it's mimicking a crying child. Definitely unsettling.

But it is not a harpy eagle, which I'm fairly certain was sent directly from Satan's bird cage.

Thank you (genuinely) I was just coming back to say ok my mistake it appears corvids do mimic.

Doesn’t however take away from my point that intelligence really has nothing to do with it, it takes daily training for months of not years to get a parrot to mimic even the simplist of sounds. They don’t “just pick it up” regardless of their intelligence.

This bird has been exposed to the sound of a crying child repeatedly and encouraged to repeat that sound repeatedly.

Nah, not funny or entertaining

Santaisironingwrappingpaper · 23/12/2020 13:14

Would be sucked up my vacuum cleaner in no time!!
*joking...

A crying distressed child is adorable?! Interesting definition of adorable
moglovesmincepies · 23/12/2020 13:18

Well that is definitely disturbing
That eagle though what in hells name???? Shock

That's not funny really is it?

Birds can pick up things though, we had one that did this. If the phone rang and I opened the door to the home office where my parents worked it would shout Mum Dad every time but only if it was me that opened the door - if it was my Mum or Dad then it didn't bother.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 23/12/2020 13:23

No I mean the look of her adorable.

Pinkywoo · 23/12/2020 13:35

AlexaPlayWhiteNoise I see your harpy eagle and raise you a shoebill crane.

Now that bird looks like it’s trying to hold all its nerves together as a 3 year old had another tantrum

Pinkywoo · 23/12/2020 13:54

SansaClegane I want one!

Witchend · 23/12/2020 14:02

Doesn't need to be encouraged nor hear it often.
We had a blackbird that did a perfect imitation of the squeak in df bicycle.
It was only there a week before he piled it, and it would have only been heard twice a day, once leaving, once arriving.

xmasfairybuns · 23/12/2020 14:02

I'd like one of these.

I think this is the most disturbing bird ever
Witchend · 23/12/2020 14:02

Oiled it, not piled

The only way to get a bird to mimic is repeated exposure to the to the sound.

I had a parrot (had a few actually but using my most recent here) and it certainly took him many attempts at repeated words or noises to teach him things we wanted him to say.

However, it takes one single fucking time to pick up something you don't want repeating.

It's not often but parrots are sometimes like toddlers and it takes one single "FUCK!" for them to start saying it over and over and over and over....
