Does anyone remember the hygge craze?

I feel in need of some hygge. And it seems so long ago when life was all about the cosy socks.

What hyggelig things will you do this Christmas.

After the year we have ahd I am thinking of baileys coffee every morning, but might manage to resist.

But, more seriously I am going for Boxing day walk and picnic at the beach.

Bring it on.

I thought hygge was a fairly new concept, I must be late to the party Grin

I love hot tea (or mulled wine), homemade soup with warm bread and scones with jam and cream (I’ve recently been introduced to scones with clotted cream and syrup!)
I love hot baths, with candles
I live in comfy clothes at the mo (wfh), work with a Sherpa fleece across my knees
Enjoy crafting, I’ve made some Christmas presents. DD and I have been doing Sunday afternoon Christmas craft with Kirsty episodes we’d recorded from last year
Even DPony is getting in on the act in her fleecy PJs adorned with sheep 😂

BBC Sounds comedy section has a current series with Sandi Toksvig talking about Hygge and with guests.
Worth a listen!

I was lucky enough a few years back to take the Dcs to Lapland. God i loved it. The snow, the dark, the lights, the stews. Bliss

Any book recommendations on it?

iwantavuvezela · 21/12/2020 21:13

Apparently that’s quite last year 😀 here’s the new trend - Swedish Mis

I loved all this stuff without even realising that it was hygge. Soft cardigans, socks, candles, blankets, the fire lit.

What a lovely thread.

beela · 21/12/2020 21:19

Oooh. I might start hygge-ing my breakfast. I like the idea of candles in the morning.

sociallydistained · 21/12/2020 21:21

Right, well I never practiced it but I am now after seeing this thread. So I'm lighting candles, making a herbal tea. Getting the blankets and my dressing gown out. Keep the suggestions coming...

SimonJT · 21/12/2020 21:21

Essentially he buys blankets we don’t need, but before we can use them he makes me arrange them in a very particular way so he can take photos. And linen bedding, hes obsessed which is fine, but he somehow got me to iron it before putting it on. Cossiness, so he bought some curtains to go round the bed (metal four poster) and they have to be shut when you sleep.

But the main thing is persuit of everyday happiness and togetherness. So everyday he does at least one thing that brings him pleasure (doesn’t have to be a big thing) and he does one thing that brings me pleasure and one thing that brings my son pleasure, so equality the whole we over me.

No big light after 7pm.

Have a good but season diet, drink more hot drinks on cold days.

No conflict, so if there is something he doesn’t like, makes him annoyed etc. He will fix it by changing his behaviour, letting the specific person know if they have caused upset etc so the issue can be talked through there and then (he is extremely direct).

Spend at least an hour outdoors everyday.

That sort of stuff.

Its essentially the same, sometimes its called lagom

rc22 · 21/12/2020 21:26

I love candles but DH complains and wants the big lights on especially at mealtimes or he says he can't see what he's eating!!

TwoZeroTwoZero · 21/12/2020 21:26

I spend most of my time in my fleecy pj tops, thermals and thick woolly socks.

We have a pile of blankets on the arm of the settee and a load of cushions to rest on. I love lounging on there with a cup of tea in easy reach.x

banivani · 21/12/2020 21:33

I am Swedish so out of principle we don’t do hygge, in memory of the ancient feud between our nations. But I see I’ve been beaten to “mys”. Wink

WinterGarden633 · 21/12/2020 21:37

Mum’s side are Norwegian- hyggelig / koselig was part of growing up! The best bit is, is it isn’t all about the autumn/ winter, it’s for all year around!

RomaineCalm · 21/12/2020 21:39

@Summerstorms - I like the 'Little book of Hygge'. Whilst not specifically about Hygge 'A year of living Danishly' is an excellent read.

TheRealJeanLouise · 21/12/2020 21:52

Thanks for sharing @SimonJT.

The pursuit of everyday happiness and togetherness is something I’d love to adopt. As is, your partners approach to conflict. He sounds like a wonderful partner Smile

pinbinpin · 21/12/2020 21:55

ooh how do I make Bailey's coffee? the creamy one? have Nespresso and Baileys.

MotherWol · 21/12/2020 21:58

DH and I take it in turns to put DD to bed, and whoever’s not on duty tidied up the front room, lights the candles and lamps, refolds the blankets and lights a fire. That way when the other one comes downstairs, it’s cosy and relaxing and we can snuggle up on the sofa with a drink. Definitely the most hygge part of my day!

PickAChew · 21/12/2020 22:02

I made cinnamon buns, yesterday. They didn't get eaten like in glossy lifestyle mags and instas, though. I have teenage boys.

vanillandhoney · 21/12/2020 22:12

We do it every day!

Teddy bear bedding.
Nice scented candles.
Lots of snuggly sherpa blankets on the sofa.
Warm socks.
Lots of nice cosy loungewear.
A roaring fire in the living room.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/12/2020 22:46

Of course, none of us had cosy throws, nice warm jumpers or candles etc. before we heard of hygge. (Which incidentally is from the same root as our ‘hug’.). We had never heard of ‘cosy’. We were all sitting shivering on bare wooden chairs with the heating off and one bare electric light bulb.

IMO it was a very clever marketing idea here, dreamt up to encourage us to go out and splash loads of cash on throws and candles, and filled lots of space in women’s magazines.

SilverLiningSearching · 21/12/2020 23:15

How does Hygge work in the spring/summer? I associate it with being autumn/winter lifestyle?
