Exactly what and from where are you buying for your cheese board?

I feel quite posh asking that as up u til recently I was a picky eater.
So I only discovered the delights of a cheese board recently.

So from all you seasoned cheese board eaters, please can you state what cheeses, what crackers/biscuits (ie aldi, Sainsbury’s, what type etc or a selection box)
AND if you’re reeeally posh what else are you having with it? Chutney? Alcohol?

I want to open my cheese board eyes and find my perfect cheese board. Thank you Smile

Ours is from M&S and Ocado: Brillat Savarin, Black Bomber, Cornish Cruncher with balsamic onions, Cheshire Blue, Farmhouse Red Leicester, Black pepper Boursin. I've got a damson version of membrillo and crackers are whatever a relative provides. I prefer things that don't have strong flavours, so no garlic or strong herbs in them.

Cantbelievelife · 20/12/2020 20:46

Any supermarket should have a good selection. Smoked,Mexican,Stilton, garlic and Chieveley, camberet,French roulade, brie, cranberry just antbjnf really!

Cured meats,olives,grapes,sundried tomatoes

Red onion caramelised chutney for the win!

A mix of crackers, salt and pepper, plain, garlic etc

A nice fresh bread - if not fresh, roast it and use for dipping into camberet. There's lot of dipping cheese sauces you can make too

I did a thread about cheese a couple weeks ago. Got some great suggestions but not where to buy. Well done op you've covered all bases I will thank you now! Grin

Normally do an order from neals yard but we left it a bit late this year Sad
Dh is going to Waitrose tomorrow so just whatever we can get from there. I’m very sad!
My neighbour delivered us a set of 5 cheeses from Costco a few weeks ago that were surprisingly nice but nothing to write home about except for the Camembert which was one of the nicest I’ve tried from a supermarket (rather than an actual cheese shop).
We love cheese!

SoggyBiscuitss · 20/12/2020 20:51

Cured meats!! Didn’t even think about those!!

Oh I’m drooling even thought half of those items I’ve never heard of or tasted

I buy from Booths or the cheese stall on the market.
Usually a v strong cheddar, fruity one, smoked cheese, something blue for DH, a sharp red Leicester (Red Storm) + a random surprise cheese. Then I usually get a soft cheese like boursin and a camembert used for other meals over Xmas. I like cheese

A couple of packs of fancy crackers and chutneys plus pickles, shelled walnuts and I like a chilli jam too. Part bake breads are handy too.

Plus wine, always wine. I may have a little port too but only because I bought it for a recipe. Mmm cheese

Zhx3 · 20/12/2020 20:55

My local cheese shop has stopped taking orders, otherwise I'd recommend it, op.

I do like Corniche Yarg, which I think you can get widely. Also Burt's Blue, which is made in Cheshire.

Quince jelly all the way, I love it! Hard to get in the supermarket but maybe in a garden centre or farm shop?

I do also love a white Stilton with apricots or a wensleydale with cranberries at Christmas!

HerbErtlinger · 20/12/2020 20:56

I've just got my bog standard cheeses that I enjoy from Adsa but I have picked up the cornish cruncher with balsamic onions to try from M&S on the back of a recommendation on a thread here a few weeks ago

Pipandmum · 20/12/2020 20:56

I'll be going to the farm shop and selecting whatever appeals. It will only be me - my kids like the usual cheddar and not much else. For biscuits I get artisan ones with dried fruit (like fig) which adds a bit of sweetness. Some homemade apple chilli jelly to round it off. I think I'll be eating this with the leftover pigs in blankets in the evening.

Zhx3 · 20/12/2020 20:56

Cornish Yarg, my autocorrect is posher than I am Hmm.

Quornflakegirl · 20/12/2020 20:58

Moody's Rosary Ash
Ossau-Iraty
Rouzaire Brie De Meaux
Cropwell Bishop Stilton
Davidstowe Cornish Cheddar

All from Waitrose

BareBelliedSneetch · 20/12/2020 21:01

Our local butcher has an excellent cheese counter.

I’ll be getting lots of black bomber, something stinky like epoisses, a decent bit of Brie, a good strong goats cheese, and anything else that catches my eye.

And quince paste. Need to have some decent quince with my cheese!

Quornflakegirl · 20/12/2020 21:01

I've already eaten the Rosary Ash so need to replace it 🐽

MirandaMarple · 20/12/2020 21:02

My Sister is bringing the cheeses from my local market. I trust her to choose some good stuff. I have requested the crumbly Lancashire that the stall sells, it's excellent.

I serve one type of cracker (usually a water biscuit), I've made rhubarb and ginger chutney (rhubarb from the garden) and a spiced plum chutney. I serve with red grapes and celery. I always offer butter for crackers too.

I like a pate on the board too.

DonkeyMcFluff · 20/12/2020 21:02

We normally treat ourselves to M&S cheese but can’t get any this year because Ocado slots are non existent and it’s not safe to go to the store. So we will be having Tesco cheese ☹️

Stuff that goes on the cheese board is generally blue cheese, goat cheese, soft garlic cheese, spicy cheese, brie, smoked cheese. Fruit such as figs, grapes and satsumas. Hummus, crackers and breadsticks. Cured meats. And a few salad leaves to decorate.

Exactly what and from where are you buying for your cheese board?
SoggyBiscuitss · 20/12/2020 21:03

Oh wow this is turning out to be the poshest pod related thread I’ve ever read.

Thank you, I’m making notes and googling.
Never heard of quince!
Farm shops!!! What a good shout! There are a few around where I live.
I’m going to be in a cheese coma by Boxing Day night!!

I love Neal Yard cheeses as a op mentioned, amazing choices and you can taste before you buy 😊

Our cheese board has actually shrunk over the years. Fewer, but quite distinctive ones and all made with raw (unpasteurised milk). A mix of a soft sheep/goat, a blue(Roquefort), a hard cheese like a strong cheddar. That’s it. With toasted sourdough bread, quince jelly and a dessert wine.

starsinyourpies · 20/12/2020 21:08

I'm pregnant so choices on good cheese are limited but getting a good chunk of Stilton (would normally get Stichelton from cheese shop but it's unpasteurised) and some nice strong cheddar.

Happyforthem · 20/12/2020 21:10

Wow @DonkeyMcFluff, love your cheeseboard.

CrazyBaubles · 20/12/2020 21:22

We bought most of ours from Sainsbury's. It's not a posh selection but it'll all get eaten:
Mature cheddar
Red Leicester
Brie
Wensleydale with cranberries
Red Leicester with chilli
Stilton (for DH 🤢)

Caramelised onion chutney from a Christmas market a month ago.
Cracker selection box
Pickled onions (from FIL)
Grapes
Blackcurrent jam (try before you judge)

It's been calling me from the fridge since yesterday - not opening it until Christmas Eve 😋

Tangledtresses · 20/12/2020 21:25

@Quornflakegirl

Moody's Rosary Ash Ossau-Iraty Rouzaire Brie De Meaux Cropwell Bishop Stilton Davidstowe Cornish Cheddar

All from Waitrose

Yes 🙌 I'm with you there!
ReceptacleForTheRespectable · 20/12/2020 21:26

You're too late to order for this year, but I highly recommend my award winning local cheesemonger:

www.thecourtyarddairy.co.uk

They deliver all over.

Tangledtresses · 20/12/2020 21:28

I'm buying cheese from our local cheese maker
But will buy some from a supermarket because bullshit covid bollocks
I would love Cornish yarg and Cornish blue too

CherryPavlova · 20/12/2020 21:31

I’m disappointed. We should have been away, but now cannot be but I cannot get a cheese delivery for love nor money. I’ve had to order supermarket stuff which will do but really isn’t the same.

Tangledtresses · 20/12/2020 21:31

I made my own quince jam this year
And grape jelly it's lush and goes very well with cheese

So easy to make but you need to like doing this stuff
Pottering 😃
