What’s your “ How did this crap get published?!” book?

Just finished The Pretenders by Agatha Zaza. Gosh it was dreadful.Cannot understand how drivel like that gets a publishing deal. There was a scene where, in the middle of a “ dramatic” moment, one of the side characters crosses the room to his wife and “ took hold of the corner of her blouse” . What?! Who does that?! I can’t even picture it.

50 shades of abusive coercive shite

Twilight - sparkly, abusive, coercive shite

Sophie Kinsella

Nadine Fucking Dorries

Amazon needs a 'block everything by...' option.

Twobrews · 20/12/2020 20:17

@garlictwist
On Chesil Beach is my favourite book ever. You are wrong. So there.
I'm gobsmacked. Why, does it help you sleep because it's so dull? Grin

Viviennemary · 20/12/2020 20:20

Marian Keyes. What boring tedious drivel. Can't understand the popularity.,

Dolly Alderton book - awful.

Going against the grain I enjoyed 'The Slap'.

MarshaBradyo · 20/12/2020 20:23

Oh that reminds me I couldn’t do past third page of The Slap

cherrypie790 · 20/12/2020 20:23

Def 50 shades. Just so awful.

And the later Jilly Cooper books (i loved her early stuff) but dear god, I'm so confused by about page 10 about who, why and where that I've given up entirely.

It went really downhill with the man who made husbands jealous.

TravellingSpoon · 20/12/2020 20:26

Everyone I know loves it, but I thought 'The Woman in the Window' was boring and although it was well written it was just a bit meh!

user1471565182 · 20/12/2020 20:29

Maigue- Thats really, really not what 'nonce' means

TravellingSpoon · 20/12/2020 20:31

Nonce = Paedophile no?

Cheeseandlobster · 20/12/2020 20:33

@firstimemamma

I loved my lovely wife but the author wrote a second book - I think it's called he started it - and I hated it. Couldn't finish it.
I feel the same. The one about the siblings on a road trip? I liked My Lovely Wife but the second one was both boring and terrible in equal measures with horrible horrible characters
Maigue · 20/12/2020 20:39

@user1471565182

Maigue- Thats really, really not what 'nonce' means
Which is why I assumed your usage of it to describe a legal, consensual gay relationship was homophobic.
Firevixen · 20/12/2020 20:49

Catcher in the Rye. I had to force myself to finish it. It's on every modern classic 'must read' list, so it must be great, surely. Nothing happens in the story at all... literally nothing. The protagonist isn't even likeable.

yearinyearout · 20/12/2020 20:56

Fifty shades, total drivel.

KenAdams · 20/12/2020 21:00

@x2boys

50 shades of grey ,I couldn't finish it ,it was so dire
This. The dullest book ever.
amgine · 20/12/2020 21:01

We are all completely beside ourselves.

firstimemamma · 20/12/2020 21:01

@Cheeseandlobster glad I'm not alone! I just couldn't get into it and you're right about the horrible characters.

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 20/12/2020 21:08

Christ this has brought back so many bad book memories!!!

A little life - why, why, why so much pain. It was absolutely gratuitous

Controversial Maybe but I absolutely hated Zadie Smith White teeth. Boooooioiring!

Catcher in the rye - just a waste of time. Thank God it’s short. I kept waiting for something brilliant to happen

I was alright with Eleanor Oliphant

Wolf Hall - sorry yawn fest

Gabriel Garcia Marquez - tedious (and I love magical realism)

The Cows - bloody rubbish, sorry Dawn

God I could go on!!!!

SomeoneInTheLaaaaaounge · 20/12/2020 21:09

Oh and Normal People - thanks for saving me the bother of reading that!

Boiledeggandtoast · 20/12/2020 21:10

@ThomasHardyPerennial

Station Eleven was underdeveloped, and a pile of rubbish. I was much more interested in the side characters than the wet main ones. It gets recommended on Mumsnet all the time, and I always wonder why.
I'd forgotten Station Eleven, it was awful and I've no idea why people think it was anything other.
workworkworkugh · 20/12/2020 21:13

After (book series) by Anna Todd, was originally a fan fiction about Harry Styles, if you thought 50 Shades of Grey was bad, this beats it by a mile!

workworkworkugh · 20/12/2020 21:14

Oh, and I didn't know it was originally a fan fiction before i started reading, I just don't mind a bit of YA fiction sometimes.

JeanLouiseFinch · 20/12/2020 21:14

Three Women by Lisa Taddeo- supposedly researched and the stories of real women but feels as though it’s titillation written by men for men. Only redeeming part is the description of grooming and how the victim was blamed.

SelfIcellation · 20/12/2020 21:16

Anything by Lucinda Riley.
Crawdads
The Cows
Anything by Matt Haig. Boring drivel.
The Testaments. In the bin!
The Giver of Stars by Jojo Moyes.
Song of a Skylark and Letters from the Past by Erica James. Erica used to write great books, now she just writes about posh people in dysfunctional families. Snore.

I really liked Elinor Oliphant

OneKeyAtATime · 20/12/2020 21:24

50 shades
Ps I love you
Eleanor Oliphant

I don't like wolf hall but I can see why it s liked by some. I wouldn't say it s s bad book, just not my kind of book .

Spidey66 · 20/12/2020 21:27

@JuneFromBethesda
It's like Marmite, you either love it or hate it.

I liked The Slap which everyone seems to hate. I agree none of the characters were likeable, but I enjoyed the story.
