I haven’t done my Christmas food shop yet. How worried should I be?

Until earlier this week I had no idea what our plans were for Christmas. We were going to go to MIL, then she was coming to us, my dad and brother and SIL were going to come to us, now they’re not, etc.

Anyway, now plans are finally decided I need to do my food shop. Obviously there are no delivery slots available now so I was just going to brave the supermarket on Tuesday or Wednesday. Am I mad?

I've got a Christmas pudding, that's it. I'll go shopping at some point before Friday!

WingBingo · 19/12/2020 09:58

Not at all. Just go early. Good luck.

HermosaMain · 19/12/2020 09:59

We haven't, we've looked, but the dates weren't good enough for most things and we only have so much room in the freezer

Haven’t done mine either.

Mycircusmymonkey · 19/12/2020 10:00

Haven’t done mine either. Can’t face the shops this weekend so will go Tuesday probably. I did go to the butcher yesterday and buy a fillet of beef for Xmas day which I will put in the freezer. I’m not really worried

UntamedWisteria · 19/12/2020 10:00

Our local supermarket is staying open 24 hours this week. I'm sure you'll be able to get everything you need if you shop at the right time.

CisMyArse · 19/12/2020 10:00

I haven't done the food shop yet OP. Apart from a few essentials that DD's really want (Yule log etc), I'm not particularly worried.

DH or I plan on going very very late or very very early on Tuesday.

Snowpatrolling · 19/12/2020 10:02

I’m doing mine Tuesday! It’s only me and the kids so whatever we don’t have so be it!!! May end up with chicken instead of beef but I’m not worried!

eeiizzol · 19/12/2020 10:03

Don't plan on doing shopping until the 23rd

NYNYNYNYNYNYNYNYNYNYNYNYN · 19/12/2020 10:04

Don't worry. You will be fine. The only problem will be for them wanting delivery slots

DailyPotion · 19/12/2020 10:06

I'm going to go on Monday afternoon - early is always busy.

What I can't get, we'll manage without.

Pyewhacket · 19/12/2020 10:08

Me too. Smile
Lindy2 · 19/12/2020 10:08

You won't get a delivery or click and collect but I'm sure most of what you want will be in the shop. If it was me I'd do a late night shop one evening to avoid the crowds and hassle.

You might have to compromise on a few things, if stuff is sold out, but you'll be fine.

Springersrock · 19/12/2020 10:10

I’ve ordered a turkey and bought a Christmas pudding the other day.

I’ll go for the big shop this weekend at some point and get fresh veg and stuff on Tuesday when I pick my turkey up

sunnysidegold · 19/12/2020 10:11

Go late or go early. I was in Tesco last week and the checkout assistant told me they were open 24 hours in the hope it would spread the crowds out a bit. I'll be going Thursday I think but early.

EvilPea · 19/12/2020 10:11

Given turkeys are only just in you should be ok.
I did notice frozen ones have been low on stock though.
My plan is to go early one day this week.

blessedfig · 19/12/2020 10:12

I'm going on Tuesday for fresh things because I don't want to be freezing and defrosting and it's payday and I want to save what I can this month and get this stuff out of December pay.

I was not worried at all until I saw this thread. I'm sure I do it like this every year and it's always been fine. It's only me and dc though so maybe that's why?

Rainallnight · 19/12/2020 10:14

We’re the same. Have had no clue what our plans are and still don’t, really. I’m setting my expectations fairly low in this shitty year, so if we end up with roast chicken and a box of Milk Tray, that’s fine with me!

OrigamiPenguinArmy · 19/12/2020 10:19

I’d only be worried if you had your heart set on a very specific thing available in only one shop, such as a particular organic turkey crown with a particular stuffing and topping which you can only get from Waitrose. If you’re content with whatever the shop you go to has in stock that day then you’ll be fine.

WanderingMilly · 19/12/2020 10:20

You'll be fine, I'm doing my last minute things on the Wednesday, partly because of the meat use by dates and all the fresh salad stuffs. There will be plenty there...

nosswith · 19/12/2020 10:25

Just go early. I was in the supermarket today at 915am and it was quiet enough that there was no queue in the checkout.

shamus2020 · 19/12/2020 10:26

I'll be doing mine on Xmas Eve after work, I've got my parents and my ex on Xmas day aswell as myself and 3 adults kids and 2 little ones. I've got all the snacks bits in just need to get the food. Never understand why people go days before I like my stuff fresh.

yellowmaoampinball · 19/12/2020 10:26

I never do mine until a few days before and it always works out. I've got pigs in blankets but that's it. We have lamb instead of turkey so that doesn't seem to run out.

RUOKHon · 19/12/2020 10:34

Okay good. Feeling less panicked now!

Worried about what? Items out of stock or shops being crowded?

Most supermarkets have a restricted number allowed in due to covid so I'm expecting to queue for longer outside but inside won't be more crowded than a usual peak time.

Lots of people haven't done their Christmas food shop yet and you're not needing to buy for lots of guests. I like doing it a couple of days before because nearly every "Christmas" food item and all the crackers are reduced.

Relax and merry Christmas Xmas Smile
