I haven’t done my Christmas food shop yet. How worried should I be?

Until earlier this week I had no idea what our plans were for Christmas. We were going to go to MIL, then she was coming to us, my dad and brother and SIL were going to come to us, now they’re not, etc.

Anyway, now plans are finally decided I need to do my food shop. Obviously there are no delivery slots available now so I was just going to brave the supermarket on Tuesday or Wednesday. Am I mad?

I dint understand these people who have their food shopping done now. Surely fresh stuff will go off. Why would it be mad?

Backbee · 19/12/2020 13:59

It's fine here, I usually am quite an early bird anyway though and would recommend going early.

RUOKHon · 19/12/2020 17:00

What exactly are you worried about? I've been shopping today and I'm sure my area isn't unique, there was mountains of food and less busy than a normal Saturday morning

I don’t know!

I usually book a Waitrose slot in early November and sort it all then. This is the first year in about five years I haven’t done that and I’m imagining pandemic-panic bare supermarket shelves and beans on toast for Christmas dinner.

But actually it’s going to be fine isn’t it? All the doom and gloom just got to me there for a second. I’m alright now.

We're doing ours Monday. Hopefully there will be things available. I have Christmas pudding Xmas Smile

I'd go late rather than early, the dotcom pickers are starting in my store at 4am and almost fill the aisles, between 7am and 9am the store is jam packed with customers and dotcommers, worst time to come!

Theforest · 19/12/2020 18:29

I think very late shopping would be better than very early. Thats what I am planning on doing for anything I cant get through click and collect.

I have gone early in past years and its always better by the time you are at the checkout.

By the way, the slots for Asda and Sainsburys are open for after Christmas if anyone needs one!!

MrsDThomas · 19/12/2020 18:38

You’ll be fine. Im going to Aldi 7am on Tuesday for lots of food and wine.

That's true! You can't even get around the aisles in our local ASDA.

They stack the shelves in the evening so stock levels are usually better.

Justcashnosweets · 19/12/2020 18:52

Havn't done mine, but plan to go Tuesday morning and hope for the best. 😬

BogRollBOGOF · 19/12/2020 18:57

My MO is late on the 23rd. Families and older people are less likely to be out then. Usually Morrisons and Aldi are complimentary in the lines they run out of.

Admittedly I have the longer life items in already. So it's veg and general fresh food to get through the week. It is normally fairly civilised.

MsAwesomeReindeer · 19/12/2020 21:32

I've just done my big weekly shop. I'll still have to get fresh veg and milk later in the week but there's only 4 of us, so we won't need too much and I'll be able to fit it in a basket and whizz in and out as fast as possible (and walk there so I don't get trapped in the car park!)

ScrapThatThen · 19/12/2020 21:55

Can you imagine the queues in the post office on monday Shock

Pipandmum · 19/12/2020 21:58

No whole turkeys other than frozen available near me. No crowns at Tesco but some were available at M&S. Good Housekeeping recommended Christmas cake sold out at Waitrose.

FizzyPink · 19/12/2020 22:03

Well I did have my Tesco slot booked but I’ve just noticed they’ve removed the Turkey from my basket so I guess I’ll be going out for one anyway Hmm

smismas · 19/12/2020 22:07

I usually go on the 23rd or 24th, as early as possible. Will do the same this year and hope for the best... I've been at the checkout by 7am and it's already chaos!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 19/12/2020 22:14

I've not done mine and I don't get out of quarantine til Christmas Eve so on Christmas Day we will be eating whatever I can buy on 24th.

MrsDThomas · 19/12/2020 22:18

I’ve just seen photos of supermarkets in wales. Fuckinghell, stop panic buying!
