Is there a right way round for cards to go in envelopes?!

Is it right to have picture or reverse at the 'flap' side...or have you never given it any thought whatsoever?

(According to a recent recipient of a card, I am doing it the wrong way. I did not know there was a wrong way to put cards in envelopes, as long as you can close it)

I overthink this every time I send a card, so it's not just you.

CatVsChristmasTree · 17/12/2020 20:16

Picture facing flap, so you take it out the right way up.
Yes, I do think about things like this.

Bokky · 17/12/2020 20:17

I also have the picture facing the flap

pinkbalconyrailing · 17/12/2020 20:18

picture on the flap side so that postage stamps and address writing don't mark through.

igotosleep · 17/12/2020 20:19

Yep, picture facing flap. Always. I don’t know why Grin

EggnogAndAMincepie · 17/12/2020 20:19

Mine just get stuffed in any way as long as it fits in the envelope. Something with a bulky front say a badge or something I'll put in facing the flap part of the envelope so I can write on the other side easily

madcatladyforever · 17/12/2020 20:19

Open side down so the glitter you put in it for the inlaws goes all over the floor.

dumpling123 · 17/12/2020 20:20

Picture facing the front of envelope with seam of card at bottom envelope. The flap of envelope sits onto the rear of card.
Once when I was a child, I was sent a card but the envelope had stuck to the picture on the front and ripped it. I do it the way described above ever since because it really upset me! Bit odd but there you go!

Happytentoes · 17/12/2020 20:21

Ah well, to buck the trend, picture to the front so the sticky flap doesn’t mark it or tear it on opening. Always fold side to the top, so it slides out easily.
Address before insertion to make sure there’s no pressure on the picture.
My mum was very fussy about such things and it’s stuck.

Thighdentitycrisis · 17/12/2020 20:24

@Happytentoes
I’m with you

TyneTeas · 17/12/2020 20:26

So there seems to be a logic to picture either way, so as not to be indented when writing the envelope or so as not to stick to the flap

Hadn't even considered fold up or down as a thing either (although am liking madcat's glitter antics)

Fold at the bottom of the envelope, so anyone opening the envelope with a knife doesn't cut the card in half.

TyneTeas · 17/12/2020 20:35

I have been alive for decades! Is this a worryingly embarrassing gap in my knowledge?

I write on the envelopes before putting the cards in. Some cards have 3D bits stuck on, so it makes sense to write them on a flat surface beforehand and not risk tearing the envelope.

I also face the card to the back. Majority of people opening a card will do so with the flap facing them, and if right handed, use a knife from that side, cutting towards the left (the card would be open, so no risk of cutting the card). It means that the card is the correct way up and facing them when they slit the top.

I'm unsure how people can fit cards into envelopes sideways? Most envelopes only fit the card normal way or up side down.

amusedtodeath1 · 17/12/2020 20:47

It doesn't matter, the only thing that does is that the folded edge is at the bottom of the envelope so that if you use a letter opener you don't cut the card.

Mrsmorton · 17/12/2020 20:48

Anyone who criticised my envelope skills could get right to fuck if they think they're getting another card.

CarpetTime · 17/12/2020 20:49

Yes there is a right way. The picture faces the flap and the creased edge goes into the envelope first.

MaryShelleysDracula · 17/12/2020 20:49

@madcatladyforever

Open side down so the glitter you put in it for the inlaws goes all over the floor.
As a VERY established glitter sender this is not the correct way to do it! Open bit down results in a lot of glitter in the envelope and very little in the lap/ on the floor of the recipient. Open bit up, don't leave any traces of glitter if they may be expecting it and as they lift it out and open..BOOM! Here comes your glitter. Once people become wise to your tricks you need to change your handwriting or get someone else to address the card for you.

Yikes 😬
Watto1 · 17/12/2020 20:52

Picture away from the flap. I once opened a home-painted birthday card from my 5 year old niece with the picture facing the flap. The flap was stuck to the picture and took the paint off the picture when I opened it.

mynameiscalypso · 17/12/2020 20:53

DH and I have constant and bitter arguments about this - I think it should be picture facing the address side of the envelope, he thinks flap. I'm disappointed to learn he is in the majority but I refuse to accept that he's right.

TyneTeas · 17/12/2020 20:58

It wasn't so much criticised as commented on

(recipient mentioned when I asked if they had received it that at first they had thought it was a charity mail out as the logo it was in aid of was printed on back and the first thing they saw, because I had put it in the 'wrong' way round)

Sewrainbow · 18/12/2020 08:35

Ive just realised my mum was fussy enough to teach me this!

Fold in first, so that when using a letter knife it isn't sliced in half.

Picture facing flap so receiver can see it and pull it out to open like a book once envelope opened.

sashh · 18/12/2020 08:47

I do the same as @madcatladyforever

MaryShelleysDracula I salute you however I have moved from glitter to card confetti and I may have invested in some tissue paper.

BogRollBOGOF · 18/12/2020 08:53

I put the fold in first because it's easier to push in with the closed edge.

Picture to the back because it's less likely to be seen if the envelope is a bit thin.

It wouldn't occur to me to notice how anyone else did it though!
