Hot food for a picnic - ideas?!

All I can think of is soup in a thermos but is there anything else that could be packaged up to stay warm? Whenever I've tried before with sausage rolls in foil it's never worked. Am I missing anything or is it just chicken sandwiches and quavers all round and count yourself lucky?!...

Hot dogs also work in a flask 😊

Gumbo · 17/12/2020 14:31

Food thermos with boiling water and hot-dog sausages, and some rolls to put them in? Or a stew in it?

Pot noodles? Grin

JazzyGeoff · 17/12/2020 14:32

Baked potatoes?

Just screams 'picnic' to me Grin

Picnic near a cafe doing hot food?!

CMOTDibbler · 17/12/2020 14:46

Chilli in a food flask, pour onto nachos in a plastic bowl, add ready grated cheese

Normal sausages stay hot in a food flask (preheat with boiling water for 10 minutes to make sure its as hot as possible, then have sausages inna bun

Laquila · 17/12/2020 14:50

Sausages inna buuuuuuuun, @CMOTDibbler?! Very appropriate 😂

Thanks everyone - some good ideas here. Annoying the venue is set (stately home grounds with little in the way of good catering, and all insanely pricey) but I've just spent an instructive 20 mins on Google and got some more ideas for containers etc - fascinating reading!:

Who knew there was such call for lasagne bags.

@EthelTheGoose I bloody love those hot dog sausages but the rest of my family believes themselves to be above them 🙄

I was once at a picnic where there was a very successful warm roast chicken

VaggieMight · 17/12/2020 14:58

Pasties can keep warm. It depends how far you're traveling

CMOTDibbler · 17/12/2020 15:04

Sorry, I couldn't resist it...

Laquila · 17/12/2020 15:09

@Rainallnight I am in awe

Love the idea of taking your slow cooker on a picnic 😂

Wrapping roasted meat in foil and a towel keeps it warm for hours so I imagine that would work for other things too.

Laquila · 17/12/2020 15:24

@SpamIAm I know!! Specific bags for it! Genius.

If you have any big bubble/foil “cool bags” left over from summer they also work the opposite way in keeping things hot. They’re the ones you can buy at the supermarket, sometimes near the checkout.

boltingthestabledoortolate · 17/12/2020 15:41

I've made pizza and wrapped it up in tinfoil , it kept warming for quite a while

NeonSparkle · 17/12/2020 16:12

I think the best bit of a picnic is that the food is cold Blush

I agree. Take mulled wine in a flask to warm up instead!
calculatorbattery · 17/12/2020 16:22

Like pp I've kept pizza warm in foil for ages.
I like the idea of roast chicken kept warm served with wraps and coleslaw. Although it would need to be nice weather!!

Laquila · 17/12/2020 21:47

Mulled wine is a good call actually. It's my mum's (significant) birthday and she's cold in front of a furnace so I need to try and make it as comfortable as possible for her! Also planning hot water bottles and handwarmers...

I have three food thermos flasks for dc late extra curricular activities. Pesto chicken pasta always goes down well!

RosesAndHellebores · 17/12/2020 21:55

If you have an insulated picnic basket, hot sausages and burgers wrapped in foil and a couple of tea towels stay hot and can be popped straight into buns and hot dog rolls. Don't forget the ketchup. Did this for some of ds's outdoor parties and it went down a storm.

grassisjeweled · 17/12/2020 21:57

Sticky toffee pud straight out of the oven, still in the little foil tray, then wrapped in foil and a tea towel.

Custard in a flask.

speakout · 17/12/2020 21:58

Could you have a BBQ?

Crazy in winter maybe, but there may be BBQ area in the picnic place. You can take a gazebo in case of rain.
