Ds has a special request to have a ‘festive day’

TheChosenTwo · 17/12/2020 10:52

We are in isolation awaiting test results, don’t really have anything specific in that shouts ‘festive activity’, he’s not sure what he wants to do. Any ideas? He should be at school having fun, he’s currently at home reading and doing a small bit of online learning!
Ps, if you’re isolating are you allowed in the garden? Is that a stupid question Confused

Yes you can go in your garden.
How old is he?
Watch Christmas films, put Christmas music on and have a dance party, have a picnic with Christmas food on lounge floor, make snowflakes,

helpfulperson · 17/12/2020 10:58

Ditch home schooling for a start for today. Decorate the house. Do you have paper, tinfoil, sellotape and scissors? Make lots of snowflakes, angels etc. And/Or paper chains. Christmas cookies if you have the ingredients.

LightDrizzle · 17/12/2020 11:02
  • Bake ginger biscuits or similar in festive shapes
  • Cut out, draw and decorate Christmas dinner place names for everyone (if you have any card and glitter and the like)
  • watch a Christmas film under blankets with hot chocolate.
  • wrap presents together with Christmas carols or songs playing, smother your anxiety when his look a bit shit.
I’m pretty sure you are allowed in your own garden.
SmidgenofaPigeon · 17/12/2020 11:04

Why on earth wouldn’t you be allowed in your own garden Confused

The kids I nanny for have spent two hours making a massive paper chain from cut up newspaper stuck together. The effect is a bit Cratchett-Christmas but they seemed happy enough.

Camomila · 17/12/2020 11:05

If you haven't got any baking supplies you could make reindeer food out of porridge oats? (Don't add glitter though)

You could also cut out old cards to make decorations or gift tags.

DailyPotion · 17/12/2020 11:06

Make a ginger bread house and watch Christmas films

Gilead · 17/12/2020 11:21

Make a wreath with bits from the garden?

Littlemissnutcracker · 17/12/2020 11:25

He sounds lovely. Paper chains. Music and dancing. Watch the Christmas chronicals with a hot chocolate.

TenCornMaidens · 17/12/2020 11:26

Stick an orange with cloves. Make paper snowflakes or paper chains. Put on a christmas movie and write cards to his friends. Make a christmas video for nana.

DryRoastPeanut · 17/12/2020 11:28

Christmas movies, Christmas tunes and bake some mince pies or cakes or trifle, something he can help with and you have ingredients for.

Have you a pritt-stick and some paper? Make paper chains or square paper and make stars (loads of videos on making stars on YouTube.

Give him some decorations and let him decorate his bedroom. Sing Christmas songs, put on a YouTube fire place video and drink hot chocolate whilst singing carols.

Does he still believe in Santa Claus? If not, let him help you wrap a gift to his dad or grandparents.

DioneTheDiabolist · 17/12/2020 11:29

Finger paint snowmen and reindeer. Use a marker to draw the details.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 17/12/2020 11:30

Oh bless him!

Agree with making simple pomanders with oranges and cloves. They smell beautifully festive.

Bake biscuits and decorate them.

Make paper chains with scraps of paper. Or make snowflakes to string up in the windows.

Watch Christmas films and have snacks.

HollyandIvyandallthingsYule · 17/12/2020 11:30

Oh, how old is he?

TheChosenTwo · 17/12/2020 11:35

Thank you all for some fab suggestions. We had decided to make some Christmas biscuits but I had forgotten all about simple paper snowflakes!
Sorry, he’s 9, meant to add that at the beginning.
We are going to light the fire after lunch and have a Christmas film, just getting out the paper and scissors. He only did 2 pieces of home learning because I was busy just getting some work done and dh was cleaning the kitchen, the dds were upstairs also finishing their last bits of home school stuff.
He’s keen to help me wrap presents Shock - I will let him do some of his sisters’ things, he’s good at keeping surprises secret and he’ll like being a part of it.
Thank you all for your terrific ideas, I’ll read them all out to him and let him choose what he wants to do.

Oh, and re the garden, well I have no idea really, just second guessing myself I suppose. If I’m not allowed out of the front door I wondered if we’d be instantly crucified for going out in the garden! Good to know it’s most likely okay, I doubt many people are using their gardens anyway at the moment so risk of particles spreading to anyone else out there is hopefully very very small. That’s even if any of us actually have the virus! Can’t wait for the results to come back so we know either way.

Make a hot chocolate station if you have the stuff in or someone could provide?

Ds has a special request to have a ‘festive day’
TheChosenTwo · 17/12/2020 11:44

We do have stuff in for a regular hot chocolate, marshmallows and squirty cream. He only really likes the toppings but I’ll still ask them all if they want one.
Well I had to spend £40 this morning on Amazon fresh because we needed a couple of essential items and my regular food shop isn’t coming until tomorrow! Chucked in some extras to make up the amount i needed.
Haven’t told anyone yet as don’t want anyone panicking about our Christmas plans so didn't want to ask friends/family. They would definitely help if we asked but we decided to just wait for the results before letting anyone know we are isolating.

Christmas baking - gingerbread decorations/house, decorate a Yule Log, make some mince pies.

How old is he? Make some salt dough Christmas tree decorations?

SimonJT · 17/12/2020 11:47

Do you have any wax crayons? We have done a lot of pictures with a white wax crayon and then painted over them in water colours to ‘reveal’ the picture. I bought a cheap roll of lining paper and we used the ‘art’ to wrap some presents.

If he likes wrapping pressents could he make wrapping paper bows to stick on the parcels? If you google wrapping paper bow templates there are lots so he could make different bows to go on the presents.

IMNOTSHOUTING · 17/12/2020 12:00

Make a gingerbread house. Watch Christmas films. Play board games and eat Christmas food. Google Christmas crafts and make something.

Sprig1 · 17/12/2020 12:09

Christmas light safari (if you have a car). Spend the day planning the route, print a map, highlight roads that you think will be good. Prepare a car picnic for dinner. Make a play list of songs. Once dark set off on safari.

TheChosenTwo · 17/12/2020 12:27

@Sprig1 I wouldn’t risk going out in the car, a relative works in A&E, treated a road trauma incident and 50 members of staff contracted Covid and were sent home to isolate because the patient had coronavirus.
But a nice idea for when we’re out of the woods, the dc love a car picnic!

Assuming that it's a private and not communal garden then he can go there.

My neighbour has self isolating kids and they are sometimes skipping and playing on their driveway.

TheChosenTwo · 17/12/2020 12:47

Yes it’s a private garden. We’ve just made a little obstacle course and had a bit of a charge about, even one of the older ones joined in.
We have a treadmill in the garage which I’m dusting off because I usually go for a run every other morning and it’s killing me not getting out, but it was good to have a play in the garden even though it’s a bit muddy Grin

TheChosenTwo · 17/12/2020 12:51

He’s now having a ‘festive shower’ - made festive because I’ve put a Christmas playlist on for him Grin
