I am in need of a decent office chair

Home working is really hurting. I have an ‘egonomic’ type kneeling chair which is fine for a couple of hours until I slump into bad habits and the despair of 9 hours in front of a laptop Makes me shrivel.
My VDU assessment is being passed from pillar to post and by the time it actually gets looked at I’ll be completely broken.
So I need a decent chair. One that isn’’t too big as my workspace is tiny and not expensive as I’ll be paying for it myself.
Also would one of those posture corrector brace things help?

I have this. Wasn’t super expensive and I find it comfortable. They have various “fancier” versions too.

Dh recently got one via Amazon from office hippo £90 - executive high back model.

ChristmasUserName2020 · 17/12/2020 10:56

I’ve just got a standard office chair but got one of those things that straps on the back that encourages you to sit up straight. Real revelation! No idea of cost as paid for by work but it can’t have been expensive.

ritzbiscuits · 17/12/2020 11:16

Have you asked work if they will fund one or let you borrow one from the office now? My work couriered me my office chair. This was originally done for people who have had workplace assessments in the past, but now have opened it up to all workers. I would escalate it and see what they can sort out for you.

There are a lot of secondhand office furniture places around and they often have barely used or new chairs and desks, this is our local one, ors-recycle.co.uk/

pinkbalconyrailing · 17/12/2020 11:43

langfjaell from IKEA might fit your bill.
it's not as massive as some others and has a decent back rest, though not adjustable.

NastyBlouse · 17/12/2020 11:44

I work from home full-time (have done for years, I'm a writer) and I had back issues from rubbish chairs. I'm afraid the only thing that has helped me was expensive -- a Herman Miller Aeron.

They're £1200 new but I believe you can get genuine refurbished or used ones -- they last forever as long as they're serviced from time to time.

pinkbalconyrailing · 17/12/2020 11:45

havd you got a separate monotor/keyboard for the laptop?

WhyDidntTheyAskSanta · 17/12/2020 11:49

No separate monitor. Work is complicated. In theory they should assess and provide. In reality the bureaucracy means it’s going to take 8 years to sort out.

at least get a separate keyboard and mouse and put the laptop on a box so that the screen is at eye level.

pinkbalconyrailing · 17/12/2020 11:52

or if you have a tv, try using that as monitor.

OllyBJolly · 17/12/2020 11:58

I got this one www.officefurnitureonline.co.uk/posture-executive-leather-office-chair.html

Next day delivery and I opted for fully assembled. It's been great (only two weeks in)

NotMeNoNo · 17/12/2020 12:56

I realise not everyone has money to throw at the problem but for my own health, comfort and in regard of commuting expenses saved, I thought the investment in a small home working set up was worth it.

  • Chair
(already had desk) 24 inch monitor, keyboard and separate mouse Laptop riser (just a tin cupboard riser from TK maxx) And after a few months a secondhand speaker/mic to save me from headphone ears. It can't have come to more than £200. It has made the last 9 months bearable to be honest.

We also have Herman Miller chairs (Sayl) at work - I miss mine!

Yes, raising the laptop screen height is the least you can do. I used a shoebox and some books until I bought my cheap monitor of Amazon. Keyboard and mouse packages are not too expensive either.

Chair wise, in the meantime I assume you are sitting on a dining room chair or similar. So am I at moment, in process of buying office chair within employers stingy expenses claim budget limit. Use a small firm pillow, or cushion or folded towel under your bum to make sure your knees are lower than your hips. Small cushion or rolled ip towel in small of back. Lots of short rest/stretch breaks and if you can, stand up when in virtual meeting or telephone calls.

We had Herman Miller chairs at work. They were awesome. The closest I had got to them was a FelixKing Ergonomic Desk Chair with Adjustable Height and Lumbar Support from Amazon. Nearly as comfortable and a 10th of the price.
