Is this as dangerous as I think it is..?

My sil in law is due her first baby in early March and around a month ago bought a kitten.

The kitten is absolutely gorgeous and really loving! I have no problem at all with cats and have one myself. Sil is very attached to the cat and has it sleep in bed with her. In fact she won’t leave it in the house alone because it’s still settling in.

I mentioned that maybe it would be good to start having the cat sleep elsewhere because it’s going to be a big upheaval for the cat otherwise. A new baby and changing where she sleeps at the same time. Sil informed me that she wasn’t going to kick the cat out of her bed and it was going to sleep in the room with her and the baby.

This sounds insane to me! When mentioning my concerns I was told to butt out. Is this as dangerous as I think it is or am I being overly cautious?

I’ve always had cats, never had any problems with them trying to sleep in the cot with my babies. They mostly chose to steer clear of them, especially when crying. We made sure to supervise contact to avoid any biting or scratching. DS1&2 are now 16 and 18.

My black cat used to attack DS1’s feet but only if we didn’t feed him quick enough in the morning. No lasting scars, physical or mental, DS1 adores black cat.

It is an old wives tale. I guess a cat could be dangerous but having had cats all my life a screaming/crying baby will discourage it. Cats in general are good companions for many reasons and will grow up alongside the child.

Other countries don't even sell cat nets, it's only in the UK this is thought of as being a problem.

Not true, this came up in my antenatal classes and I am not in the UK.

My cat used to sleep on my bed next to me under the cover. As soon as I had DS he buggered off.

I suspect she will change her mind when baby arrives. Mothers instincts kick in.

A cursory Google throws up a number of cases over the past couple of decades. It happens, obviously not a lot but it’s not unheard of.

My kitten often waits until I am asleep and then lies on my neck, it is either super cosy there or she is quietly trying to dispose of me!

@kazillionaire mine did that and now he’s grown into a huge cat weighing 5kgs or so, he’s too big to sleep on my neck so sleeps on my pillow. 😳😄
