What's going on your Christmas Dinner?

FoxyTheFox · 13/12/2020 23:35

Doing my Christmas food shop online and it got me wondering what people have for Christmas Dinner because it varies so much from family to family.

We are having:

  • turkey crown
  • mashed potatoes (DS won't eat roasted)
  • roast potatoes (other DS won't eat mashed)
  • sprouts
  • mashed turnip (actually swede but we say turnip)
  • parsnips
  • broccoli
  • carrots
  • Yorkshire puddings (because they're lush and they're one of DS safe foods)
  • peas (another safe food for DS)
  • gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, etc

Pudding will be a choice of ice cream or Christmas pudding with brandy sauce.

No starter but I will leave some pigs in blankets, crackers, and some other nibbles on the table for DC to pick at while waiting if they want.

I know for a fact someone will be along to say "that's loads of food!" but its the only meal I cook all day as breakfast is usually something from their stocking selection box and/or Pringles and tea is whatever leftovers there are from dinner (if anyone is still hungry, which they usually aren't), anything left after that gets made into Christmas Dinner bubble and squeak next day.

So what does everyone have?

This year there’s only me, DH and toddler DD so slightly different to usual.

Chicken instead of turkey (a large, slow grown organic, locally produced one though).
Roast potatoes
Roast carrots
Roast parsnips
Green beans (for DD as she loves them)
Sprouts with bacon and cream (divine recipe from Good Housekeeping)
Yorkshires
2 types of stuffing - M&S
A million pigs in blankets

Starter is a bought-in posh prawn cocktail from M&S.
Pudding is something chocolate for me, DH has a small Christmas Pud his mother made (I don’t like it).

Normally we host and have turkey or rib of beef. Sides would be similar, just fancier, and there would be homemade starter, usually a terrine or mousse and a pudding selection. But we can’t be arsed to faff as much for just us. It’ll still be lovely but simpler.

We have smoked salmon and scrambled egg on toast for breakfast and supper will be cold meat and cheese board.

FoxyTheFox · 13/12/2020 23:52

That sounds lovely! DH and I once had a Christmas just the three of us when DC1 was a toddler and it was wonderful, really chilled out and relaxed day.

We’re having 2 Christmas dinners - 1 English and 1 Danish

English (on Christmas Day):

Nibbles served an hour before, with bubbly: melon wrapped in Parma ham, olives, breadsticks, maybe some charcuterie

Main:
Turkey
Christmas ham
Roast potatoes
Roast celeriac
Pigs in blankets
Gravy
Sage and onion stuffing
Roast carrots and parsnips with maple syrup, thyme, lemon and garlic
Sautéed Brussels sprouts with pancetta, chestnuts and cranberries

Christmas cake and cheese board served later, with port

Danish:

On arrival: æbleskiver (traditional pancake balls, served warm, with icing sugar and jam) and gløgg

Starters:
Smoked salmon
Pickled herring x 2, served with boiled eggs, shallots
Devilled eggs
Prawns
All served with rye grain bread

Liver pâté with Melba toast, crispy onions, cold bacon slices, pickled

Frikadeller (pork & beef meatballs) served two ways: cold with beetroot & sour cream salad, and warm with pickled cucumber & lingonberry jam

Main:
Roast duck stuffed with prunes & apples, with braised red cabbage, boiled potatoes and brown sauce

Cheeses with crackers and chutney

Risalamande (rice pudding mixed with whipped cream and flaked almonds, eaten cold with warm cherry sauce), with cherry liquor

Coffee & marzipan cakes

Basically the same with more veg. It's a sort of self service thing. So we'll cook broccoli and cauliflower, cabbage (white), glazed parsnips, carrots, sugar snap peas, stringless beans, sweetcorn and sweets potato mash, to go with the roasties, Yorkshire puds and puds in blankets. Sounds a huge amount, but 6 adult meals Christmas day, 5 adult meals boxing day and whatever 3 little ones will eat. The dog has leftovers and gravy mixed with her food for a few days too. :) we cook loads of variety but not in quantity, and people can choose what they fancy.

We don't do breakfast, starters or afters, just a veg filled dinner. We cook a few different meats too, and they go home with my sister's and brother's family, and I guess we all live on casserole and stit frys for aweek. :)

Your dinner sounds lovely, perfect. Each to their own Christmas day I say, whatever works for your family. :) If I was alone, I'd have a lamb biryani with chocolate fudge cake for afters :)

I'm doing a Swedish Christmas dinner for my parents on the 24th and an English one for me and the DC on the 25th. I did the same last year as DP are now too old to shop for, prepare, cook and serve a holiday meal. It's my little gift to them. It's a lot of work but the DC are old enough to help with prep and cooking.
