What's going on your Christmas Dinner?

FoxyTheFox · 13/12/2020 23:35

Doing my Christmas food shop online and it got me wondering what people have for Christmas Dinner because it varies so much from family to family.

We are having:

  • turkey crown
  • mashed potatoes (DS won't eat roasted)
  • roast potatoes (other DS won't eat mashed)
  • sprouts
  • mashed turnip (actually swede but we say turnip)
  • parsnips
  • broccoli
  • carrots
  • Yorkshire puddings (because they're lush and they're one of DS safe foods)
  • peas (another safe food for DS)
  • gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, etc

Pudding will be a choice of ice cream or Christmas pudding with brandy sauce.

No starter but I will leave some pigs in blankets, crackers, and some other nibbles on the table for DC to pick at while waiting if they want.

I know for a fact someone will be along to say "that's loads of food!" but its the only meal I cook all day as breakfast is usually something from their stocking selection box and/or Pringles and tea is whatever leftovers there are from dinner (if anyone is still hungry, which they usually aren't), anything left after that gets made into Christmas Dinner bubble and squeak next day.

So what does everyone have?

Just for the four of us this year, but with plenty of leftovers:

Breakfast:
Scrambled eggs, smoked salmon and toast

Lunch:
Whole roast turkey
Pigs in blankets
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Sprouts
Carrots
Homemade gravy
Cranberry sauce

White chocolate gingerbread yule log (would normally have Christmas pud when eating with extended family, but onlyb2 of the 4 of us like it).

Tea:
Turkey/Glazed ham sandwiches and/or cheese and biscuits
Mince pies

Nymerialuna · 14/12/2020 18:17

Roast Turkey Crown
Honey Roast Ham joint
Slow cooked beef
Roast potatoes done in goose fat
Honey mustard roast parsnip and carrots
Cauli, brocolli and leeks cheese bake
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Yorkshire pudding
Gravy
Cranberry sauce, mint sauce (because I love it over veg), horseradish

Desert will be a roulade or cheese cake (eaten in the evening usually)
Breakfast will be a croissant

It is a lot of meat but we are hosting boxing day so the left over meat will be served with cheese, crackers and pickles.

Starters
-Prawn cocktails as in laws are retro and melon painstakingly cookie cut into star shapes.

Turkey
Pork in a bourbon glaze
Pigs in blankets, chipolata sized as dh can eat his body weight in them and cocktail sausages will not cut it.
Meaty sort of stuffing (meat sweats here we come!)
Potatoes drowning in goose fat
Yorkshire puddings (contraversial but dds love them)
Carrots
Parsnips
Cauliflower cheese
Macaroni cheese (absolutely does not belong on a roast dinner but thanks to Toby Carvery DS believes that it does.)
Red cabbage
And Brussels sprouts with bacon and chestnuts. Fil is already getting anxious about us forgetting the Brussels. Its only one day a year and he needs them. We have never actually forgotten them. Last year he even bought an emergency bag with him just incase.

Copious amounts of wine and a cornish cider for dh that he fell in love with one year on holiday. Shleur for DC as dd2 thinks it's very sophisticated, dd2 has requested J2os for which I might find some Christmassy straws.

smismas · 14/12/2020 19:55

I've never cooked on Christmas Day before (although I've done a full Christmas dinner for the four of us on a different day a couple of times so no different really!)

We're having:
Slow cooked beef
Roast chicken
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Carrots
Sprouts with pancetta
Broccoli
Yorkshire puddings
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Gravy

Wasn't going to bother with a starter but I'm thinking maybe pate on 'fancy' toast.

For pudding I've got a 'chocolate bomb' and I'm also getting something lemony, either a tart or a roulade.

Graphista · 14/12/2020 20:10

I'm veggie and it'll just be me this year for a lot of reasons mainly covid

Nut cutlet
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Carrots
Stuffing balls
Yorkshire pud
Cranberry sauce
Gravy

It's a lot but it'll be a wee bit of everything.

Pud is a ready made individual mature traditional Xmas pud but veggie. I've no microwave and I'm not sure how I'm going to heat it! I don't have a trivet and I'm not convinced my cheapy plates would be safe to use as such I've been furiously googling how to heat it in the oven to no avail so far! So if anyone can advise I'd be grateful

No starter and pud will be as supper rather than straight after main meal as my appetite not the best these days.

@HollyandIvyandallthingsYule I haven't had port in YEARS! Your danish menu is making me miss Northern European food. I've no connection to Denmark but have lived in Germany, Netherlands and Belgium AGES ago and I STILL miss the food and drink!

I may order some lebkuchen, advocaat and stollen sadly cannot get speculaas here and my own attempts were disappointing.

1 sprout per person is that to make everyone appreciate the nice bits?

Red cabbage ooh adding that to shopping list! Also some kind of baked cheese type thingy, won't necessarily have on the day

@GintyMcGinty Ooh you're brave posting that veggie option! Is that you eating it? Contains the 2 items most mn veggies hate! Mushrooms and goats cheese! Sounds delicious to me though

Jelly and ice cream how wonderfully retro! Is making me consider getting a trifle

@Bloodybridget Is chewing the issue? If so could you or dp blend it for you to eat? You don't have to blend it all together you can add a little gravy or cranberry sauce for moisture and blitz each element in a blender to keep the key flavours separate unless you want to combine them while eating, you can even use food colouring to counteract the dulling of the colours to make it appear more appetising
So sorry you're going through all that. Thanks

Bloodybridget · 14/12/2020 20:29

@Graphista you can steam your pudding; if you have a small old plate or a saucer, put that in the bottom of the saucepan, put the pudding in in its bowl (if you can transfer it to a china or metal bowl, that might be safer), tie a couple of layers of greaseproof paper over the top, boiling water to within an inch of the top of the pudding, and simmer for maybe an hour? We always did them that way when I was a kid.
Thanks very much for the suggestion re my lunch - I actually don't think I could eat pureed food even if it tasted good, I would rather wait until I can manage it as it is. I can't chew, or open my mouth properly, because of ulcers, anything at all spicy is out too.
I hope you enjoy your lunch and Christmas generally!

PolkadotGiraffe · 14/12/2020 20:34

Goose
Sour cherry sauce
Roast potatoes
Carrots
Braised red cabbage
Mange tout

Graphista · 14/12/2020 22:16

Sorry my suggestion no good to you hope you're able to enjoy your lunch on the day

I'm worried my plates would explode! I don't think they're up to that kind of heat and I'm loathe to buy a trivet or good plate JUST for this purpose I also wouldn't manage standing for a long time (disabled) to keep an eye on the pan that's why I'm hoping for an oven solution that I can just stick it in to steam in oven - I'm thinking perhaps in Pyrex casserole dish? I have one with a lid I'm wondering if I could put boiling water in the main bit then put the pud in the upturned lid placed on top with a little hot water in too, fashion a handle for the pud out of foil?

If anyone can say of that would work or how else I can do it I'm all ears

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 14/12/2020 22:44
