Weird shit DH says

At the end of a work call that's been productive he sometimes says, "great, looks like we're cooking on gas then!"

I have never heard anyone say this except him. I think he's made it up and he's trying to make it happen, like fetch in Mean Girls.

How about yours?

Iwonder777 · 13/12/2020 19:50

I say that 😁

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 13/12/2020 19:52

I think it’s “cooking with gas” but it’s an actual saying.

lazylinguist · 13/12/2020 19:53

I hate that kind of cringeworthy work jargon. Makes people sound like David Brent from The Office! He hasn't made that one up though OP - it's pretty well-known.

WhatKatyDidNxt · 13/12/2020 19:54

My dad used to say that!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 13/12/2020 19:54

"Now we're cooking with gas” originated in the late 1930's or early 40s as a slogan thought up by the natural gas industry to convince people to use gas, rather than electricity, on their new-fangled stoves

Uptide · 13/12/2020 19:56

It's not a cringeworthy work saying. It's an old slogan from advertising and is used a lot, not just in work situations.

SlippersForFlippers · 13/12/2020 19:59

I've heard loads of people use that phrase, with either on/with gas.

Hangingover · 13/12/2020 19:59

Blimey, he's even older than I thought.

He also says "noodledoodles" whenever I mention noodles. Grin

Cooking on gas is a regular saying in my area, ready to rock n roll etc. Would be a very dry world without such phrases.

elephantoverthehill · 13/12/2020 20:03

It is an old gas advertising slogan. The next one was 'Cook, cookability, that's the beauty of gas.' What a trivial bank of knowledge I have.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 13/12/2020 20:04

I think noodle doodles also comes from an ad - for tinned spaghetti, if memory serves. The song, to the tune of Yankee Doodle, began “Noodle Doodle came to town, riding on a pony....”

MargotMoon · 13/12/2020 20:04

"Noodle doodle went to town with lots of straight spaghetti..."

Haven't thought of that ad for years!

lazylinguist · 13/12/2020 20:04

I still think there's something a bit cringe about it, especially when used in a work context.

Are you married to Ned Flanders?

flakdh · 13/12/2020 20:07

In fairness, cooking with gas is great.

Hangingover · 13/12/2020 20:08

Apparently my DP is subconsciously consuming vintage adverts Grin

He also just went rummaging for the cheese in the fridge and removing a few items syaing "Tempeh....temper temper....Vitalite...feels quite light"

If we get to okaliedoakalie I'm calling the police Envy

Barmyfarmy · 13/12/2020 20:13

My DH says okaliedoakalie... send help! (He's about 150 though so has no idea where it comes from)

pinkdragons · 13/12/2020 20:13

My DH says it occasionally. He also says 'bless me' after sneezing, soo... 🙄

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/12/2020 20:14

I say it all the time!

Hangingover · 13/12/2020 20:17

Maybe I'm imagining things now but he just asked me if I wanted a warm drink.

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 13/12/2020 20:17

Yes this is quite a common saying I’m surprised you’ve not heard it

I have it worse, my six foot ex military husband infantilises words.

Like I’m having some crispies do you want some. Or I’m cold I think I’ll put my jumpie on.

Seriously just fucking say jumper and crisps. You’re not two.

OatcakeCravings · 13/12/2020 20:17

I say cooking with gas all the time as well, really well known saying.

Never heard the noodledoodle thing though!

legalseagull · 13/12/2020 20:18

Doesn't everyone say "bless me/you?" What do you say?
pringlebells · 13/12/2020 20:19

My DH calls everyone man. Literally "thanks man" to everything
