What do you have for dinner on Xmas eve?

Just that really, can’t say I’ve ever thought about it as it’s just been me and my husband the last few years, and we always went to the pub. Now having my family over so wondered what to do Xmas eve that’s ‘festive ’ but easy? Don’t want to cook 2 big meals in a row!

We’ll have a takeaway this year as it will just be me and DP. Probably a Chinese or Dominos.
If I’m at my mum’s then it’s something different every year. I think last year was homemade steak pies, mash and veg and then a trifle for dessert

MrsDThomas · 13/12/2020 15:54

Were out to lunch on Christmas Eve so we’ll have nibbles. Crisps, turkey sandwich, pickles, cheese and beer.

DonnaScozzese · 13/12/2020 15:54

Aromatic crispy duck. Normally we have the in-laws who don't like "foreign" food so delighted to be getting a change from yet more meat and two veg.

I always do a big ham on Christmas Eve, so we have ham, egg and chips 😁

FinallyHere · 13/12/2020 15:59

Seafood platter.

This year from Waitrose.

Lemon sorbet and vodka to finish.

Roominmyhouse · 13/12/2020 16:02

We’d usually skip dinner and be in the pub Christmas Eve but in Kent so no danger of that happening this year!

So plan is to get some good fillet steak, triple cooked chips and mushrooms for DH/salad for me. Washed down with beer and or Prosecco.

MustBeThin · 13/12/2020 16:11

I roast a gammon joint so we can eat leftovers over Xmas. We have gammon, homemade chips, fried eggs with bread and butter.

Costa200 · 13/12/2020 16:14

Were having an M&S buffet this year but some years we have kept it simple and just had a nice curry or chilli/lasagne etc...something that I could make the day before so that Christmas Eve was hassle free!

Holothane · 13/12/2020 16:15

Fillet steak and chips we love it.

Groovee · 13/12/2020 16:16

Normally go to pizza express.

KatherineofTarragon · 13/12/2020 16:17

Another M&S buffet here! I cook a full xmas dinner xmas day, so like make xmas eve easy for myself.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 13/12/2020 16:24

Ham rolls....I cook the ham on Christmas Eve and spend all day threatening people with a fish slice if they dare to go out and pick bits off it, so we get some big soft white rolls, and have them filled, sometimes chips, sometimes salad to go with.

LadyofMisrule · 13/12/2020 23:03

Christmas dinner here. We have a buffet on Xmas day.

Liverbird77 · 14/12/2020 03:51

We have our Christmas dinner
It's traditional to do this in Spain, and we are a Spanglish household.
Also, Christmas Day is for the kids. We have yummy party food and they can pick at what they want in between playing with their toys.

Afwan · 14/12/2020 06:00

Bbq.

Parents (separated but friends) were both shielding and didn't get the chance to enjoy a bbq in the summer (too much work for one apparently) and we've been allowed to fly back to see them this Christmas. So that's what we're doing! Hoping it'll become a tradition Smile

KingscoteStaff · 14/12/2020 06:09

Fish pie and sticky toffee pudding.

Ifailed · 14/12/2020 06:13

Don't really bother with dinner usually, but might have something different for tea, I'll wait until next week to see what takes my fancy.

christmasathomeagain · 14/12/2020 06:18

Cheese board, done it for years so its traditional now.

Gooseysgirl · 14/12/2020 06:23

We always have boiled ham with cabbage, mash and parsley sauce. It's a very old family tradition from my Irish family.

Nuie · 14/12/2020 06:37

The ham and Nigella’s OTT macaroni cheese.

EnPoinsettia · 14/12/2020 06:39

Usually go to a local Pizza Express, more for the venue than the pizza, it used to be a pancake place, with happy family memories, always same table. But may not be open this year.

So a bit torn between pizza and pancakes. Maybe pizza followed by pancakes!

PolarnOPirate · 14/12/2020 06:42

Cheeseboard and charcuterie 😍 my fave tradition in our house!

sashh · 14/12/2020 06:42

Totally off topic.

I'm dyslexic and sometimes my brain forms words that aren't there, it sort of picks letters to connect.

Anyway at first glance this thread looked like someone was asking ""what do you do for Christmas sex"

MaverickDanger · 14/12/2020 06:44

If at my parents, we normally go out for SE Asian food, either Thai or Vietnamese.

If at PIL, it’s normally a whole salmon & prawns with salads (Australia).

This year it’s just us for the first time, so I’ve ordered a sushi platter to be delivered.

AurorasGingerbreadHouse · 14/12/2020 07:21

Something involving smoked salmon and cream cheese, home made mince pies warm from the oven, tangerines and walnuts
