What do you have for dinner on Xmas eve?

Just that really, can’t say I’ve ever thought about it as it’s just been me and my husband the last few years, and we always went to the pub. Now having my family over so wondered what to do Xmas eve that’s ‘festive ’ but easy? Don’t want to cook 2 big meals in a row!

Fish pie. Every year. Due to my Catholic upbringing.

DunravenBadger · 13/12/2020 12:20

KFC Grin

Our local keeps messing up our order though so think we will have to think of something else this year as it's always so disappointing when they get it wrong.

Tangledtresses · 13/12/2020 12:22

I make gravalax a few days before
And cook the ham

So we have ham warm with mash etc
Gravalax and a nice glass of fizz 😃

A hot ham in cocoa cola baguette with a ‘posh‘ salad and assorted pickles and cheeses on the side.

Notgoingonholiday · 13/12/2020 12:29

Fajitas and nachos. Has been our 'tradition' for as long as I can remember. This year we're going to top it off with a chocolate fondue.

littleharissa · 13/12/2020 12:33

A massive chilli con carne

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 13/12/2020 12:36

We usually go to pizza express before church, so this year I’ll get the pizza express pizza from Morrison’s I think.

merlotormalbec · 13/12/2020 12:38

We've always had a Chinese but im just not feeling it this year so I'm abit stuck! Husband wants Pizza but we have that a lot so not sure

spagbog5 · 13/12/2020 12:39

Smoked fish platter
Charcuterie platter
Crusty bread
Lots of champagne!!

mamakoukla · 13/12/2020 12:40

Smoked salmon, rye bread, leafy green salad and some nibbles done as a picnic by the Christmas tree. Trying to decide on nibbles but possibly olives, roasted almonds, hummus and vegetables, a baked savoury cheese tart or quiche. Would like something a bit different but not too much as we are planning for a turkey the next day

LegoPandemic · 13/12/2020 12:40

Nigella ginger ham with dauphinoise potatoes and vegetables.

GreekOddess · 13/12/2020 12:41

@vinoelle. We are tier 2, I hadn't realised that restaurants weren't open in tier 3. Admittedly I haven't been paying that much attention to other tiers. Cases are on the rise in our area so I ought to have a plan B just in case we are moved up to tier 3.

I am missing winter walks followed by a large glass of wine in a pub with an open log fire Wine

gerbo · 13/12/2020 12:43

We are reversing this year. Roast chicken dinner on xmas eve, then easy xmas day dinner to avoid being stuck in the kitchen.) on xmas day we'll have steak or hunters chicken with homemade chips and salad.

practicallyperfectwithprosecco · 13/12/2020 12:43

Dd birthday so she always gets to choose - usually eat out but not this year so it will be Nando's delivery.

JamesMoriarty · 13/12/2020 12:44

Party food buffet here too

Peridot1 · 13/12/2020 12:45

Lasagna. Every year. DS insists. He’s now 19 and still wants it!

Some of the suggestions on here are lovely.

My sis and her family always have Nigellas loaded potato skins. Might have to do that one night.

Mamagotskills · 13/12/2020 12:45

I cook my gammon on Christmas Eve so have that with dauphinois and green beans

MargosKaftan · 13/12/2020 12:46

Chippy tea, normally. But then we normally go to church for the 4:30pm service that has us home about 5:30pm and then starting something complex is too much what with me wanting the dcs in bed at a decent time.

This year I'll have time to do something so not sure, although I might have a revolt on my hands if I try to change the tradition...

Theotherrudolph · 13/12/2020 12:58

Lasagna and garlic bread. Previously we’ve had chilli or curry. Basically something that I can make ages ahead and freeze.

motherofawhirlwind · 13/12/2020 13:01

Sausages, mash and onion gravy

HUCKMUCK · 13/12/2020 13:14

We’ve never really settled on anything but this year we’re going out for Mexican food. DCs are 22 and 15 so it’s nice to go out and not worry about kids menus and bored kids!

ImnotCarolineHirons · 13/12/2020 13:20

Chippy tea! Usually after an afternoon out in the big Christmas market but that's not happening this year of course. I'll miss my 4pm mug of mulled wine from my fave stall.

MrsMariaReynolds · 13/12/2020 13:22

Picky bits Grin

In all seriousness, we usually get a load of party food in and just nibble and drink for Christmas Eve dinner. Love it! I freeze the rest of the batch and pop it in the oven on NYE.

Alldayeveryday200 · 13/12/2020 13:28

I cook Nigella's ginger glazed gammon and we get chips from our local chippy. Served with some other picky bits. Left over ham gets eaten over the Xmas period.

LegoPandemic · 13/12/2020 13:36

Anyone else call “picky bits”/ party food “bitings”?
My parents always call small party food that- they used to live in Kenya.
