If you have a spin bike at home - how often do you use it?

I just started hoping spinning before the first lockdown and it's the only exercise I've not hated. I was starting to get fitter and was losing some weight.

Even when the gym re-opened they weren't doing classes and lockdown hasn't been kind to my weight!

I'm thinking about getting a spin bike but wondering how much I'll use it and whether a £350 one will be anywhere near as sturdy as the ones in the gym?

Well, mine is still in its box but when it eventually sees the light of day, I’ll probably wear running leggings, sports bra, random t-shirt and ordinary trainers.

HeyLala · 18/12/2020 16:07

@Bridecilla
I do. I have Peleton so shoes, shorts and gloves.

SimonJT · 18/12/2020 16:11

@Bridecilla

Random question - def going to order one (not sure which yet)

Do you get changed into your full on gym gear to spin at-home?

I do pants and shoes, stylish!

Er, I don't use it much lately, no time and limited storage in our current house (which we've been stuck in longer than we wanted due to purchase falling through). But I used to ride it 2-3 times a week when I wasn't so busy with work and dc. I loved it. It's not quite the same as spin classes in the gym, but it's still good. I have a Spinning brand bike, which at the time was about 250 (it's the 'home' version of the professional Spinning bike you'd use in the gym), this was probably 7 years ago. I think it was very worth it if you don't see yourself being someone who will prefer to go back to classes when gyms re-open.

mindutopia · 18/12/2020 16:54

I wear normal cycling clothes, just like I would at the gym.

MyBiscuitspread · 18/12/2020 17:17

@Bridecilla
I sometimes wear proper workout clothes to feel nicer and get more motivated but I also very often wear whatever I know needs a wash. Pjs, t-shirts etc.

I try to use my bike not less than twice a week and do full body dumbbell exercises from youtube the rest of the time.

Since we are on the subject of spinning bikes: I easily last one hour on the bike and thought I was quite fit now. When I recently had to rundue to being late, I was surprised how quickly I was out of breath. Does anyone know why/have the same issue??

Baileyscoffeeandcampfires · 18/12/2020 17:24

I bought a Schwinn ic8 during lockdown. It cost £1k but myself, Dh and dd all use at least 3 times a week . It's in the garage along with a concept 2 rowing machine that Dh uses almost daily .

The two machines were expensive but combined with les mills on demand it will have worked out less than joint gym membership within 2 years.

We've put an old tv on a bracket so that it's a bigger screen for watching classes. The trip on les mills is brilliant in the pitch black garage on the tv

jasjas1973 · 18/12/2020 17:25

I have a turbo trainer which i attach a road bike too, it links to a laptop and for £10 per month (zwift) i can ride race and train with real (virtual) cyclists like me from all over the world, sometime you met pro cyclists on their too.
In the summer i can ride my bike outside.

£700 gets you a Wahoo Kickr Core (mid range) and if you don't like it, they hold their value really well.

Bridecilla · 20/12/2020 13:06

Looking at Echolon - they have a 'deal' on for £1049 (i was originally hoping to spend £400 on a bike 🙈)

How am I talking myself up in price?! ;)

I’ve just done my first Les Mills The Trip - all 8 minutes of it - and it nearly killed me. Think I need to take things slowly...

garlictwist · 22/12/2020 16:46

I bought a second hand one from ebay just before the first lockdown when I thought we weren't going to be allowed out.

I use it three times a week. I don't have Peloton or anything, I just use my headphones and make my own routine up.

garlictwist · 22/12/2020 16:47

And I just wear shorts and a sports bra as I get so incredibly hot and sweaty

garlictwist · 22/12/2020 16:49

It cost £250, plus £100 quid for me to pay a bloke with a van to collect it and drop it off.

Bridecilla · 22/12/2020 17:36

@garlictwist that's such a bargain!

I'm such a ditherer! I was all set to buy an echelon but the monthly classes are £40!

Could I get an echelon and use, say Les Mills maybe which I think is way cheaper

OP posts:
SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 26/12/2020 20:12

You could. But you might as well get another, cheaper bike if you’re not going to buy into the whole Echelon thing.

Bridecilla · 26/12/2020 20:55

OK. So a cheaper but still gym quality bike with les mills... hoping for a sale one!

I've just bought a Bodymax B15 from Powerhouse Fitness. Waiting on delivery now. I'm going with Les Mills on Demand for the classes. The bike had loads of great reviews and was £449 I think. I hope it's good!

EmmaStone · 29/12/2020 18:51

We've got a secondhand Life Fitness one, which would have been £1k+ new, but we paid about £500. DH is a keen cyclist, so has always used it when weather too bad to get out. I never really liked it, and then got a free limited period Peloton subscription during lockdown, so used it alongside the Peloton app, and now do 2-3 sessions a week. It's absolutely fine, although I do quite fancy an actual Peloton bike for the added functionality (but don't fancy the added monthly cost!).

I do quite a mix of exercise (some via the Peloton app, but I do like their cycling workouts the most), so I don't see the value in that being the only thing I use. But if I was starting from scratch, I suspect I could convince myself that a Peloton would be the way forward!

ChrimboCalling · 29/12/2020 19:13

I have this one too (mentioned a couple of times on here) www.jtxfitness.com/jtx-cyclo-6-indoor-exercise-bike

I shopped around loads. This one is great. I do the Les Mills classes too and love them.

LizzieVereker · 29/12/2020 19:15

Les Mills is really good.

That's the one I'm going for - I've looked at so many I'm fed up of searching. Wish I'd ordered weeks ago though as it's pre-order
Workyticket · 29/12/2020 20:13

Spinners- were any of you unfit and overweight when you started? I am both and really think this will give me the shake up I need.

I'd done a few weeks of spinning 2 or 3 x a week before covid and started to notice a difference quite quickly

Workyticket · 30/12/2020 16:03

Finally ordered from JTX - thanks those who recommended!

User9574 · 30/12/2020 17:58

Its used daily to store my fit ball between the seat and handlebars :)

I was just thinking I will start to use it now as I am SO bored of doing the same local walk. Spin is quicker.

I spent about 250 5 years ago, main consideration was a comfy seat and good resistance.
