How do you make your house smell nice?

Just that really. I know that airing it lots helps, but it's winter and we have a muddy, hairy dog! Ok, so we do wash the dog and air the house every day, but I'm still conscious the house smells of dog!

So what do you do? I dislike artificial scents and I'm conscious that some scented candles are bad for humans and animals. But if I buy the natural ones, are they good? Or is there another solution?

Florazora (I think that's what it's called) is a disinfectant that smells lovely. You can put a tiny amount in a water spray bottle and use it on soft furnishings, put it in water to mop floors and in soapy water to wipe dirty surfaces. The smell lingers 24 hours

No carpets or rugs
Windows open every day
Wash dog bedding once or twice per week on 60 degree wash with washing liquid and disinfectant
Keep dog hair short (goes to groomer every 3 months)
Bath the dog at home every two weeks and dry fully with hair dryer
Use essential oils in diffusers around the house
Don't leg dog in bedroom areas
Don't let dog on couch
Don't let dog in house if dirty or wet

I discovered this trick by accident...find a fabric conditioner you really like the smell of, dilute some with water and then "wash" your radiators. My favourite is a Method fabric conditioner but I've also used a shampoo that I really liked too. Cheap but effective Grin

I know what you mean. I only put my dog in her suit when it is really muddy. They do a lighter summer one too but I haven’t tried that one.

I got it in the light brown

PerfectionistProcrastinator · 13/12/2020 12:00

You can buy a doggy cologne. Dogs get a spritz of it after their groom to make them smell lovely. It is strong smelling. A few squirts on them goes a long way and when the dog gets wet the smell comes out again. You can also spray it on their bed.

PhilCornwall1 · 13/12/2020 12:24

We don't have a dog, but two teen boys (what the hell is that smell!!!), so need to kill the whiff! We've got a Scentsy wax burner. Hug in a mug is my personal favourite smell at the moment.

PurpleMustang · 13/12/2020 12:28

Maybe if you think the dog is an issue look at something like equafleeces so only a bit of leg is on show. And/or a drying coat so that the smell is on that and not where she sleeps

@LittleOverwhelmed

Can I ask what you meant by Agree with wording the house, even in winter?

A typo or something that I really need to know about!!

Twinkie01 · 13/12/2020 12:36

Your house will always smell of dog to someone who lives in a house without a dog. There is nothing you can do sadly. Diffusers/candles/those shite scentsy wax things will just mask the smell to a degree but it means your house will just smell of fragrance and dog.

FireUnderpants · 13/12/2020 12:43

Our old springer could find a muddy puddle in a desert.

I found toweling off the worst of the undercarriage outside with a good towel, one that is never cleaned with fabric conditioner then dedicate a dog drying room. Ours was confined to a nice conservatory with a hair dryer. It drys, is brushed out as dust which is easily swept off of tiles.

A professional dog groom once a month with a severe field cut helps massively.

Diffusers - I love white tea and flowers of Japan from La Bonne Maison Lothantique...they also have lovely candles and room sprays which I use sporadically and when we have guests..diffusers are great day-to-day...

Montsti · 13/12/2020 12:59

I have one dog (have had these dogs for 12 years and multiple houses). Lost my other one 9 months ago..our house has never smelt of dog and everyone says that. It is open plan and the big one was rarely wet (we don’t live in the UK) and didn’t go upstairs. Maybe it’s the breed?.

Oliack1417 · 13/12/2020 12:59

I use the Neom atomiser and it is great at making the house smell lovely and spa like. Friends comment on the smell when they visit. I use it with the 'scent to make you happy' oil.

Montsti · 13/12/2020 13:00

And our dog is groomed every 6-8 weeks..as was our golden retriever when he was alive....

CookPassBabtridge · 13/12/2020 13:06

Lots of plugins, regularly spray, carpet/rug refresher, keep blankets and cushions covers washed.. it's a constant mission with a dog and small kids!

Parsley1234 · 13/12/2020 13:16

Neom electric well-being pod oh my god super expensive but I love it ♥️

inappropriateraspberry · 13/12/2020 13:22

I would avoid Reed diffusers - if they get knocked over the liquid could burn pets skin.
Something like neutradol may be good, it's supposed to break down the smell rather than just mask it.
I think there isn't really a real solution unless you properly wash and dry the dog every day. Can they be kept to just one or two rooms, then at least the rest of the house may not be so doggy?
Or just accept your house is now going to smell of dog and warn visitors! 😆

A wee swipe over the top of the wood burner too. I like Lenor Ruby Jasmine.
