Do you have a monthly subscription (other than tv) and is it worth it?

The Birchbox ads on Instagram always catch my eye as they look so pretty. But I don't spend £13 per month on make up as it is so why would I want the contents?

Yet they look so pretty!

A quick Google tells me there's a fuck ton of monthly subs out there- socks, flowers, bath products, stationery, etc. A worm hole.

Does anyone actually recommend one?

I dont have terrestrial tv anymore.

I have internet and then netflix, Now TV (entertainment, movies and kids) and disney+, also youtube.

Internet £22.99 (plusnet)
Netflix £11.99
Now TV entertainment £11.99
Now TV movies £7.99
Disney+ £5.99

=£60.95

I was with Virgin media for well over 10 years and was paying £65 a month for basic channels and shit tv I wasnt interested in, with ads.

IsolaPribby · 12/12/2020 14:37

I can thoroughly recommend Audible, for £7.99 a month. That gives you 1 credit for an audio book, and you can purchase more. But one book a month is enough for me.

Doublebubblebubble · 12/12/2020 14:38

Soz just read your post properly, only just had a coffee, my bad. Lol.

I have a birchbox sub and a huntakiller sub. They are my treats, to myself.

DH gets games and blurays for himself so I get that.

I think subscriptions are good for when you want them/need them.

Yes I have a Graze box! You can choose from once a week or once a fortnight. I know it seems expensive but it's actually relatively cheap now that I'm no longer buying food from Pret.

Doublebubblebubble · 12/12/2020 14:40

Oh and audible!! As @IsolaPribby says you get credits so i have managed to listen to so many books this year!

(This post makes me look like a subscriptio n addict lol maybe I am?? Confused)

murbblurb · 12/12/2020 14:46

Readly for newspapers; lots of redtops and the Evening Standard (which is a giggle when you are miles from London...) but also a couple of vaguely readable ones. Loads of magazines too, which makes me realise why I don't buy them.

had a freebie for graze but it is just sugary rubbish dressed up as 'healthy' and would be really expensive. Don't wear slap or smells, and am able to buy food in shops so no others are of interest.

socks on subscription? How many do people go through?

ChristmasUserName2020 · 12/12/2020 18:58

Readly is great. £7.99 well spent for hundreds of magazines plus usually 2 months free at the beginning.

Justajot · 12/12/2020 19:02

DD has BakedIn - it sends her most of the ingredients for a different recipe each month. The things she's made have been lovely, but also things we wouldn't normally think to try.

We have Audible and DH mostly uses the credits. I've tried a couple of times and either I don't like listening to audio books or I have just chosen badly.

DD has Tinker Crates and they are cool, but strike me as environmentally really wasteful.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 12/12/2020 19:05

Gin box, not for everyone but I live it. £40 a month for bottle of gin, tonics, various snacks and other bits.

Also audible.

QueenofLouisiana · 12/12/2020 19:05

Readly, almost every magazine any of us could ever read for £8 a month (5 accounts I think?).

I’ve ordered a jigsaw one for my mum for Christmas.

JWrecks · 12/12/2020 19:15

The only monthly subscription I have is Spotify. Totally worth it, IMO.

Fredelliottisayfredelliott · 12/12/2020 19:28

I have Netflix, spotify YouTube premium, and prime. I love podcasts so spotify great for that and I love making playlists of live music which YouTube premium is great for and no ads! Oh and prime gives me free delivery and prime tv which is ok. I could probably do without prime.

ChessieFL · 12/12/2020 19:30

I have BakedIn too.

I also have Snack Surprise - every month you get snacks (mix of sweet and savoury) from a different country.

Also Audible.

Notdeliasmith · 12/12/2020 19:34

I have spotify. I debated it for a long time, and got gifted a years worth last year. It turns out I listen to it much more than I thought and have spent over 600 hours listening to podcasts and music.

I've asked for this subscription for christmas!
barrythecactus.com/

We also have a smol subscription and a toilet paper subscription which I would recommend. Works out cheaper for us, and its nice to never have to think about it!

Smol is very easy to change frequency, pause etc

framboisier · 12/12/2020 19:39

I have the gin box every 2 months and think it is actually good value for what you get in it, given I'd be regularly just buying the gin anyway.

I also get Freddie's Flowers every 2 weeks
They are AMAZING quality - lasting the full 2 weeks and quite often longer if you retrim, deadhead and refresh the water. You also get unusual combinations of flowers you don't get from the supermarket and instructions on how to arrange. I have converted loads of people to this one!

This is whilst I am WFH so will probably rethink when I get back into the office

framboisier · 12/12/2020 19:40

Oh yes, forgot about Smol
Not the most exciting one though Confused

MrsPworkingmummy · 12/12/2020 19:42

I get a monthly gin box from The Craft Gin club and a bi-monthly Laithwaites wine case of wine delivery. Love them both. I also subscribe to a monthly magazine subscription toox

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 12/12/2020 20:44

I used to subscribe to a few of the beauty boxes but 80% of the stuff I ended up with was crap that was unsuitable for me. I do subscribe to netflix and Disney+ and also have a pret membership, £20 a month, unlimited coffee! Well, 5 per day, but I'm not going to be drinking more than that lol.

AurorasGingerbreadHouse · 12/12/2020 20:48

Audible
Spotify
Kindle plus kindle kids for the DCs

BeyondMyWits · 12/12/2020 20:50

I subscribe to a craft box with Cosy craftclub. Try a new craft every month and the kit contains everything you need to complete the craft. Very enjoyable, very relaxing and therapeutic. Always a decent quality kit too.

igotosleep · 12/12/2020 20:51

Birchbox - does tend to get a bit repetitive though so cancelling soon
Spotify
Netflix
Amazon Prime
Disney +

DaisyF1986 · 12/12/2020 20:52

I've just started stitch fix. Was so impressed with my first one! The stylist chooses clothes for you based on your size, shape and what you specify you like. I could have bought all of the pieces they sent me but just chose one Smile

MistyMinge2 · 12/12/2020 20:56

Beautypie
Kindle plus

I started beautypie in the first lockdown as I was wfh and saving on petrol. I've tried quite a bit of their stuff now. Some ice really liked and some not so great. Will probably cancel in the new year.

I like the sound of the baking one.

bellagogosdead · 12/12/2020 20:57

Office for my student dcs
Prime obv.
I wouldn't pay for audible when you can get audio books for free from the library.

StylishChristmasTurkey · 12/12/2020 21:01

I've done Birchbox and it was good but I cancelled a few months back because I realised I had a full drawer full of samples to get through Blush

I get Audible and Spotify monthly and I also have a subscription to A Box of Stories. 4 surprise books (you can choose your genre or go for surprise) delivered to you. Mostly authors I've not heard of or books I wouldn't pick up off a shelf but I've discovered some real gems this way. £14.99 per box (I get it every 2 months but it's really flexible).
