Do you have a monthly subscription (other than tv) and is it worth it?

The Birchbox ads on Instagram always catch my eye as they look so pretty. But I don't spend £13 per month on make up as it is so why would I want the contents?

Yet they look so pretty!

A quick Google tells me there's a fuck ton of monthly subs out there- socks, flowers, bath products, stationery, etc. A worm hole.

Does anyone actually recommend one?

New Scientist and Spotify

I do have a disney+ subscription for the dc. I don't do any of that silly ' stuff delivered once a month' nonsense.'
I mean, £10 or so per month for a cute box of baking items for kids ? ( as an example) or £12 for one pair of knickers through the post each month for three months ?( another recently seen example) no way! Absolute rip off

I've had the craft gin club for the last 4 months but I've just postponed it for now as I have quite a lot of other gin so will be looking to use that up in the new year.

It's reasonable value and I like all the tonics, cocktail mixers, garnishes and snacks that come with it.

I'll probably restart again in the summer and it only seems a bit expensive to me because I'm an expert bargain hunter so my normal method of buying gin is getting whatever is on offer at Drop Store or doubling up special offers at Waitrose with the regular £8 off £40 spend that they send me. Plus I also really like the Lidl £16 gin range, so this is what a bottle of gin is worth to me.

We also have Netflix and Now TV movies, the latter on a 12 month half price deal. We'd cancel it if it was full price, but there's always a deal on this.

Our library has magazines included, so I wouldn't pay for that and I buy all my books when they're 99 p on kindle and have hundreds of unread books so not worth paying for any type of reading subscription to me.

@BookShark you choose from different options so you put in age range/gender etc and then it asks you what they like so I ticked Crime/thriller and then it sort of tailors it towards them!

She’s always thrilled but she wouldn’t say any different I suppose Grin

Chocolate brownies. Best monthly subscription ever.

Oh I also have Spotify and Smol and you’d have to pry Spotify out of my cold, dead hands. I listen to at least a part of a podcast every day and on my commutes, plus all day in the office when I’m on my own. I’ve also recently discovered they have things like Thomas and Friends for DS so we listen to that in the car too!

BioBins · 13/12/2020 17:04

@BookShark could I have a bloom&wild code please? They do look nice, but flowers aren't cheap...Smile

BangingOn · 13/12/2020 17:12

Spotify
Poleboxx (niche but amazing if you take pole classes)
Netflix

BookShark · 13/12/2020 17:22

@BioBins - I've PM'd you the link.

And @AlohaMolly, thanks for that - I'll have a Google, but sounds like a good idea for DM's birthday in a few weeks!

Another vote for audible. I have head phones in while I work. I prefer plays with a cast instead of having a book read by one person.

I’m signing up to it again next week

I absolutely swear by my simply cook subscription £7.99 a month for 4 meal spice kits with recipes. Super simple, lets us switch us up all the time and something really fun about choosing 4 meals every month!

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 15/12/2020 15:13

What a great thread. My parents are now getting a Bloom & Wild flower subscription!

I also bought them a cheese subscription from the Fine Cheese Co in Bath.

Darklane · 15/12/2020 15:26

Prime
Rowan
Prima
Amateur Gardening, which comes weekly.

Gazelda · 15/12/2020 15:40

Apart from Prime, I'm a subscription novice.
I'm tempted by the Great British Bake Off subscription though - depends if I get cash or vouchers for Christmas from parents and MIL.

notacooldad · 15/12/2020 15:50

I only have Les Mills subscription which is good.
I pay ( for some unknown reason) my adult son's Spotify.!!😂

EileenGC · 15/12/2020 16:11

I couldn't be without Spotify.

I also have Netflix, prime, Formula 1 TV (because I'm a nerd Confused), and the weekly study guide from my church (standard international edition which is published worldwide every quarter).

I'm considering getting a flower subscription for next year but do you know if I can send them to a different address each month or can they only been sent to the same house all year round?

ElizaLaLa · 15/12/2020 16:32

I used to get a glossy box. I don't anymore. £15pm for a few samples. No thanks.

We have a family Spotify account - it's pretty good value considering 6 of us use it constantly.
nosswith · 15/12/2020 19:17

BFI player subscription, probably only temporary until the end of the winter but some wonderful films I have seen.

I keep meaning to tell him to take over the account and upgrade it to a family one!

I'm using Spotify ( free version) more and more thinking how the hell has this happened!!😂😂😂

Sorry a little late to the party but I've just got 6 months free of Disney Plus through o2 - worth looking in to if you're with o2 as well!

I also started getting allplants meals delivered before Christmas and am loving those. It's £60 for a 6 two-person portioned meals, which sounds pricey but we were spending £15/20 a week on one unhealthy takeaway for the convenience of not having to cook, so these allplants meals work out cheaper and healthier for us. You can choose how often you have them delivered, we get them every 6 weeks and have one meal every Friday night. I have a code for £20 off your first box if anyone is interested: allplants.mention-me.com/m/ol/cy3gb-laura-wildwood

PeacockPartyTime · 03/05/2022 07:02

Readly. It's so fab. You get access to literally thousands of magazines a month, some of which I would literally never even think to try. I think it's around a tenner a month and you download from the App Store but they often have two months for free for you to try. There's also no minimum period, it's like Netflix.

I've recently had two Stitch fix boxes. The first I kept 4 of the 5 items. The second 2 of the 5 items. I've booked in for another box in August as it's quite expensive so just doing it for a treat every three months is enough but good to have a treat in your wardrobe.

I also like Gousto for easy meals.

Books

Literally the only thing I don't mind spending £20+ on a month
