Are card shops missing a trick?

Every year i grump to myself about this and want to know if i'm alone in being annoyed about it.

Why don't card shops sell age and relation cards? e.g To my daughter on your 18th, To my Dad on your 60th Birthday etc etc.

I know you can get them online and i have found one or two in the odd card shop but considering you can buy various 'To my Cat at Christmas ' (something i cant imagine there is a huge market for) is it not a bit odd that they dont sell them in shops?

Surely there would be a market for it?

Anyway, im glad iv got that off my chest Grin

Many do.

I've bought daughter and son on your 18th cards and my parents have bought the grandchildren equivalent. I've also seen mum on your 70th cards so I know they exist.

lilsquish · 10/12/2020 12:08

really?

i asked in cards direct and clintons and both didn't do them.

Maybe more likely for big birthdays but i certainly couldnt get daughter for her 4th birthday.

Clinton's sell 2 different Daughter 4th birthday cards.

But their in shop stock of birthday cards is always rubbish this time of year.

lilsquish · 12/12/2020 10:37

I know some shops do sell the odd one or two, i suppose i just get annoyed that you cant easily find a nice selection of age/relation cards.

They do exist, Card Factory sell them, they're in with the age cards (I was looking at them on Tuesday) and I'm pretty sure I've seen them in Clintons too.
Although as pp said, this time of year birthday cards are poor show.

BogRollBOGOF · 12/12/2020 10:41

I wish they mixed the cards up more ( I seem to get the same one each year from DH in ASDA) and did something that wasn't sport/ beer for men and pink/ flowery/ upcakes/ shopping for women. Most people I know don't feel enthused by tbose clichés.
I increasingly try to get blank photographic landsacapes/ wildlife.

lilsquish · 12/12/2020 10:46

I asked for them in Cards Direct and was told they dont do them.

I asked for DD 4th birthday and was told they only do 'special ages' 18th, 21st etc and only one design of each.

@cheesy what age/relation did you see?

OP posts:
lilsquish · 12/12/2020 10:46

sorry @cheesy i meant card factory, thats the one i was in

Independent shops have them. I was in buying my son a card and noticed they had Son and Daughter from 5 to 16 and then 18 and 21

Twobrews · 12/12/2020 10:59

I thought this was going to be about cards which are actually nice rather than the acres of twee naff ones that say to my daughter/son/uncle etc.
I know my relationship to my family and I know my age, why do I need a card emblazoned with both?

I'd like cards that don't reference Prosecco, Gin, chocolate, beer, wine and all the other crap that is sold year after year.

lilsquish · 12/12/2020 11:19

@twobrews yes no one 'needs' them but id like to have the option to buy them.

If Independent shops sell them then i suppose my title should be changed to chain card shops Grin

You are buying them at the wrong time of year. The shop has been cleared for seasonal cards. If you get them all in the summer there will be plenty.

Katyy · 12/12/2020 11:37

They do at the card factory. They also have online called getting personal.

Zoflorabore · 12/12/2020 11:38

My mum always gets cards like “to grandson on your 17th birthday” and she gets them from a tiny card shop a few miles away. She’s got some pretty obscure ones over the years and I keep meaning to go there myself.

In our local Card Factory there is a stand with cards for Dad 60/Mum 70/Son 21 etc.

Clinton’s I would expect to have a much better variety.

HermosaMain · 12/12/2020 11:42

I buy cat christmas cards

lilsquish · 12/12/2020 11:43

@myhobby thats not the case, I've struggled in the middle of summer to get them.

NotSoSecretSanta · 12/12/2020 11:43

Theres a brilliant independent card shop in my local high street that sells every possibly card you could think of, bit more expensive than clintons but worth it for a special birthday or occasion.

ArosGartref · 12/12/2020 11:44

My mum is very concerned with getting all the correct details on a card. Eg "To my daughter and her husband on the birth of their baby daughter". I've never understood it, it's a card not the domesday book.

lilsquish · 12/12/2020 11:45

Yeah @ Katyy i know i can get them online, that wasnt the point of my post.

And i haven't been able to get them in card factory, but maybe its just my area.

lilsquish · 12/12/2020 11:46

@hermo Grin love it

OP posts:
Superstardjs · 12/12/2020 11:46

I find them very old fashioned now, so it certainly isn't something I would like more of.

lilsquish · 12/12/2020 11:47

@super really? interesting the different opinions of people, maybe best i havent been able to get them then Grin

Card factory etc are going to sell cards that will appeal to as many people as possible. To sell cards at 49p or 99p they must have massive production runs.
Clintons hasn't reopened in our town after lockdown, so I thought they'd gone bust.

lilsquish · 12/12/2020 11:49

Clintons are open in my town and are a lot more expensive (however their cards are beautiful)

ragged · 12/12/2020 11:53

My local cardshop is full of age-relation cards! Probably a small town thing.
