Parcel incorrectly delivered - I have Covid

HallFloor · 09/12/2020 16:56

It's a small parcel, pushed through the letter box by the postman, but it should have gone next door.

I have Covid and the rest of the house is isolating.

It looks like an ebay purchase.

So do I send someone round with it? They can put it through the door without seeing anyone but we're not supposed to leave the house and will have touched it.

Or wait until my isolation is over? Still a week to go and they'll be expecting it.

I don't have a phone number or any other means to contact them.

Phone the post office and ask if they could get the postman to put a note through to explain? Give them the choice of collecting it from your doorstep or waiting until your isolation is over.

ScrapThatThen · 09/12/2020 17:04

Can you ask someone to drop them your number and knock or explain?

lljkk · 09/12/2020 17:06

I would drop it around in person, but realise it's not an solution without anxiety.

DownRightAmazing · 09/12/2020 17:07

Thank you for thinking about this so responsibly.

No one in your household can leave the house; you don't have contact details for the neighbour therefore there isn't a lot you can do and you shouldn't feel guilty!

You could perhaps leave a note for the postman on your front door tomorrow explaining the situation? But otherwise it will have have to wait till your isolation is over.

Grooticle · 09/12/2020 17:33

For next door, I’d leave the house for long enough to ring their doorbell. Pop the parcel on their doorstep, ring the bell (use a pen or something so you don’t actually tell it), step back and then explain the situation. They can decide how to deal with the parcel then.

DontStopThinkingAboutTomorrow · 09/12/2020 17:39

Wait till they go out and open the front door and shout from there?
I would leave the parcel somewhere where you won't touch it, in a bag. You can then tip it (gently) out of the bag onto their doorstep when you're allowed out again.

30not13 · 09/12/2020 17:44

Note on door for postie explaining and asking them to put a note through to the neighbour? I'd be getting a plastic box outside my back door to put it in and leave it in quarantine for x amount of time then saying to neighbour they can come collect if from the garden after y days

dudsville · 09/12/2020 17:46

Put parcel by their door, knock, stand back. Let them know you have cv19, that the parcel came to you. They can spray the package before handling it if they want.

Haventbeenthere · 09/12/2020 18:02

I wouldn't go near their door. I'd be really worried if someone knocked at my door saying they have Covid, even if they were doing me a favour. Either call from the window if you see them, or if you know someone else locally could you ask them to knock and explain?

NameChange84 · 09/12/2020 18:10

FFS. I’m shielding, I would be horrified if you did what some posters on here are fine with and have you turn up on my doorstep with Covid. Angry

Either ring them/text/email and ask what they want you to do or call the post office.

It’s not your fault, you’d absolutely be doing the right thing by staying in your home.

Whatever you do PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS!!!
3inthefuckingmorning · 09/12/2020 18:18

Can't believe how many people think it's ok to drop it round or shout from the door 😮

Grooticle · 09/12/2020 18:30

Ok I’m high risk and id be ok with somebody dropping the parcel round as described here. In fact I’d quite cheerfully pick up the parcel, open it, and then just bin the packaging and wash my hands. There are absolutely no recorded instances of covid being passed on by packaging. But I guess you don’t know the neighbours or how cautious they are.

Sally872 · 09/12/2020 18:37

I am low risk and would hate to come into contact with a parcel that has been in a covid household so close to Christmas. Personally I am looking forward to the small socialising window which may be the last chance until all vaccinated.

If you have anyone nearby you can contact who could knock your neighbours door and advise them parcel is with you do that otherwise I would wait until all clear.

AntiHop · 09/12/2020 18:37

Do you have the phone number of anyone who lives locally? You could get them to pop round and tell them you have the package and can bring it round when you are well.

She said she has no means of contacting them.
PurpleDandelions · 09/12/2020 18:42

Ask someone else who lives nearby to drop a note round explaining the situation and giving your mobile number. Leave it to the neighbour to decide what they are comfortable doing.

As someone who is very vulnerable I beg you not to try and drop it around yourself.

Barmyfarmy · 09/12/2020 18:44

Fucking hell Mumsnetters need to know how to read. Put it in a sealed box or bag somewhere safe outside (minimal touching where possible) leave a note for postie to tell the neighbours the situation and that they're welcome to collect it from outside your home. If they don't want to do that then leave it in that safe place until they're ready to collect it. It'll be nothing important enough to risk dying for.

DontStopThinkingAboutTomorrow · 09/12/2020 18:44

Once yo have their name, can you look them up on FB etc? Maybe you can contact them that way.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/12/2020 18:47

Here's a parcel covered in my covid germs.

SleepingStandingUp · 09/12/2020 18:47

@SleepingStandingUp

Here's a parcel covered in my covid germs.
That was meant to be attached to a comment about taking it round and then letting them deal with it.
NameChange84 · 09/12/2020 18:48

She said she has no means of contacting them.

Hence “or call the post office”.

Lots of people have landlines still, it’s easy enough to do a look up on 192.com to see if that’s the case or as a pp said, try and find them on social media.

Or...

Call the post office...

SleepingStandingUp · 09/12/2020 18:49

Agree if you have local support all someone to drop a note round.

"Postman dropped your parcel at no6. They're isolating with covid so said they're happy to keep hold of our until they're clear. It's in a bag in the garage so will be "decontaminated" by then. If you want it before then, give them a knock"

StCharlotte · 09/12/2020 18:54

Call the post office...

Yeah, good luck with getting through to a sorting office at this time of year, assuming you can even find the number.

coconuttyhead · 09/12/2020 18:56

@ScrapThatThen

Can you ask someone to drop them your number and knock or explain?
Solved! This has to be the best option.
