Vegetarian option for Christmas dinner?

Iwantmorechocolate · 08/12/2020 21:45

I’ve got vegetarian gravy and vegetables, but what can I do to replace the turkey (I don’t want to do two meals and it’s for a newly vegetarian family member).

I meant to say can anyone give some suggestions?

I would ask the veggie, from a range of options, as I know some of my veggie friends don't appreciate always being served mushrooms or goats cheese etc!

Things that are relatively easy and likely to be easy to find include:

  • mushroom Wellington (yummy for everyone if you have leftovers)
  • nut roast (I like this but some hate it due to always being served it)
  • cauliflower cheese (again, yummy for everyone if you have leftovers)

Cauliflower cheese! Or extra roasted veg (include peppers, tomatoes, onions).

My veggie is having a pieminster vegan Christmas pie (fake turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing etc-he likes quorn type food) and everything else the same as the rest of us.

Aldi do lovely veggie tarts and pies so have a look in the freezer section there.

I always make this. The turkey lovers always grab a slice too. It's delicious.

reginafelangee · 08/12/2020 22:47

My husband has a very large mushroom filled with goats cheese and sage and onion stuffing baked in a red wine sauce - served

M&S, Sainsbury's and Tesco's all have lots of very nice veggie Christmas mains you can just pop in the oven if you don't want to cook from scratch.

Lurkingforawhile · 08/12/2020 22:48

As a veggie I quite often have veggie sausages on Xmas day (I mainly love the vegetables like red cabbage, and roasties!). This year it's a cranberry brie and mushroom bake from Aldi as I fancied something different and it's easy to just put in the oven. The main thing is that every thing else is veggie, like potatoes in olive oil. My gran never remembered that Confused

For a normal roast I do love cauli cheese but not on Xmas day for some reason.

If you go with veggie sausages as the guest which ones they prefer, and they vary a lot.

Off for a snack now...this is making me hungry

polkadotpjs · 08/12/2020 22:51

That pie looks ace but I couldn't be bothered to faff. And I say that at the veggie cooking for meat eaters. I'm going to miss my mum even more this year as she normally brings me a nice veggie something (she's alive just not able to come for Christmas 😢)

BuffaloCauliflower · 08/12/2020 22:52

I usually have the Quorn roast because it’s easy to just chuck in the oven

polkadotpjs · 08/12/2020 22:53

@Lurking. I usually have sausages if it's a regular roast
The Lidl veggie pies are a very good dupe for Higgidy so I may have one of those

FraughtwithGin · 08/12/2020 22:56

Portobello mushroom stuffed with a mix of Boursin and breadcrumbs, or anything else you care to think of, roasted in the oven.

InvisibleToEveryone · 08/12/2020 23:02

At my school we do a veggie parcel, puff pastry with roasted vegetables and a bit of mixed spice inside, was bloody delicious.

Marina26 · 08/12/2020 23:02

I always have a Lidl breaded camembert! It's shaped like a breaded burger and comes with a little cranberry sauce and it's delicious with a roast!! Comes in a pack of four but I think you can freeze the others! Xxxxxx

dudsville · 08/12/2020 23:08

I'm going to get some pastry so I can make a version of that pie with the leftovers for boxing day, thanks!

motorcyclenumptiness · 08/12/2020 23:25

The easy nut roast recipe on the vegan society website is good (you can throw in a few extras to make it more festive if you want) and it works as a posh stuffing for non veggies too

LittleMissMoggy · 08/12/2020 23:31

I make a butternut squash, white stilton and mushroom Wellington. Can prepare the day before. I'm vegetarian so enjoy going to the effort. I'm more than happy though with veggie sausages/toad in the hole or a shop bought tart/nut roast.

motorcyclenumptiness · 08/12/2020 23:37

Or all the roasties/veg and these (like a mini nut roast)

Iwantmorechocolate · 08/12/2020 23:56

Thank you!

The pie looks amazing! My fall back is Ikea plant balls (I have a stock I the freezer), but I’m trying to expand my repertoire!

Xmas vegetarian options are usually shite. Especially if they're marketed as 'luxury', or 'finest'. There's nothing luxurious about lentils, or shitteyakke mushrooms or bog-standard sage and onion stuffing wrapped up in some flaky pastry. It'll either taste like cheap curry powder or be riddled with cranberries. As for nut roast: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. If I wanted to eat stale cardboard I'd pop off to the recycling bin.

Quorn roast. That's what I want.

Selttan · 09/12/2020 03:35

What about something I've this?

BarbaraofSeville · 09/12/2020 05:29

Definitely ask the vegetarian what they'd like. I think there's too many options involving pastry that just seem too stodgy to go with all the sides that they might still want to eat (the vegetarian versions obviously). But I say that from a meat eater's perspective in that they seem to be a poor alternative to comparatively light turkey.

I know nut roasts seem a bit old hat and often get a pasting but I really like the M&S butternut squash nut roast. I don't do pre-ordering so am hoping to pick one up when I do the pre-Christmas 'big shop'. They also have a ricotta stack that looks nice.

Malin52 · 09/12/2020 05:40

Definitely ask!

As a prior veggie I used to adore everything on a Xmas meal bar the meat obviously. I was always very happy with just extra helpings of veggies (if they are don't let the whole table leave the veggie with next to nothing) and I agree that Cauli cheese as an extra side is great for additional fat and protein. As a northerner I also love a couple of Yorkshire puds too and Aunt Bessie is fine by me given they take 2 mins to heat in the oven. Don't be scared to buck convention with that. On that basis veggies can be super easy.

I'd despise anything nut roasty, veggies in a parcel or 'plant balls' as an Xmas main but I'd love a Linda McCartney pie or a couple of LM saussies. My parents on the other hand would love a Quorn Roast and some veggies I know wouldn't go near a 'pretend meat' thingy.

So errr, definitely ask them!

Iwantmorechocolate · 09/12/2020 06:45

Thank you. I should have said that the vegetarian is a teen and because they’re also newish to not eating meat, they’re not really aware of what’s out there as an alternative any more than I am. Not eating the full Christmas dinner is a significant moment, so I want to do my best by them.

Yorkshire puddings! I never thought of that!
