Vegetarian option for Christmas dinner?

I’ve got vegetarian gravy and vegetables, but what can I do to replace the turkey (I don’t want to do two meals and it’s for a newly vegetarian family member).

Dm makes a little cheese and onion tart for me, when I am cooking I usually have linda mccartney sausages or veggie haggis. More often than not, I forget and just have vegetables, stuffing and gravy!

movingonup20 · 09/12/2020 07:03

Lidl have a tasty mushroom and Stilton bake

movingonup20 · 09/12/2020 07:06

Oh and last year I didn't s Linda McCartney sausages as toad in the hole making vegan batter mix (db is vegan, dc is veggie)

I love the roasties (but in sunflower oil not goosefat) and all the veg so I have often made nice veggie stuffing into patties as a top up for myself, it all depends if you like the extras. These days I make filo pastry crackers filled with mushroom sage and cream and port sauce or tomato/mozerella for the kids. Looks very exciting but a complete faff!
I love little puff pastry tartlets with roasted butternut and they are quite easy with pre roasted veg and ready rolled pastry.
That roulade is going on my Christmas menu .

Make sure you make the sides veggie - no bits of ham in the sprouts etc.

NeverRTFT · 09/12/2020 07:32

I was in the same position last year, did Quorn roast which you buy in the freezer section, but I'm struggling to find in the shops this year.
I wouldn't do collie cheese as a vegetarian main, everyone will want it as a side so just have it on the table.
Trying to post a recipe for best nut roast, not dry and very delicious

I want a veggie option which is not laden with carbs (pastry) or fat (cheese) Meat doesn’t make you fat so why must the veggie alternative?

fruitpastille · 09/12/2020 07:52

My fussy teenage veggie has Linda McCartney sausages with a roast. You can get veggie pigs in blankets from some places - I think Tesco did some last year.

muddledmidget · 09/12/2020 07:54

We're having naked glory roasted 'chicken' tenders trips from the co-op. Are very much like roast chicken slices, take 15 mins in the oven or 3 mins in the microwave and no pastry, cheese or mushrooms in sight! They are also not as calorific as some of the other options which means I get an extra yorkie

Malin52 · 09/12/2020 08:17

@bellagogosdead veggie haggis is an excellent idea! Super tasty and has a sense of occasion.

midnightstar66 · 09/12/2020 08:51

I always have a Lidl breaded camembert! It's shaped like a breaded burger and comes with a little cranberry sauce and it's delicious with a roast!! Comes in a pack of four but I think you can freeze the others! Xxxxxx

I eat all 4 of these as a snack Blush

HalfBakedReview · 09/12/2020 09:05

Last year I made DH a mushroom and chestbut wellington which he coud have with cranberry sauce. I also make a broccoli and cauli cheese wellington.

HalfBakedReview · 09/12/2020 09:07

Oh- for a (rough) recipe;

sautee diced onions, mushrooms in olive oil and butter. Add a veg gravy pot and some red wine and stir until quite thick- you might have to add a bit of flour. Then add sliced (vacuum packed) chestnuts. Then make into wellingtons. It works really well, IMO.

PurpleDaisies · 09/12/2020 09:08

Where can you buy veggie haggis?

EvilPea · 09/12/2020 09:17

I just have the veggies, but I do loads of them. So on a normal roast I’d have cheesy leeks, kale, sprouts, roasted root veg, carrot and swede mash, stuffing, roast potatoes braised red cabbaged

If it’s a guest though I’d get one of the lidl or aldi veggie parcels I like the spinach and cheese. You could also do pigs in blankets with quorn sausages and bacon.

Have a chat with your veggie, I’m ok to eat non veggie gravy, quorn and animal fat roasted potatoes. But not all are.

So you’re not a vegetarian then.
There’s no need to ask a vegetarian if they want goose fat roasties and meaty gravy. You might as well ask them if they want a beef burger.

BlenheimOrange · 09/12/2020 09:25

Ocado do a pumpkin type called ‘delica’ that has been aged, it’s got a lovely intense sweet flavour. I am thinking Xmas dinner will be that roasted in big wedges if it’s just us on the day (plus maybe a little bit of baked Camembert or crumbled Stilton). It’s my new favourite thing. We are not veggie though so ymmv.

I am at home. But I’m not going to put people out.

Well, that’s your choice but it’s really unhelpful for actual vegetarians if people who aren’t say that they are. I’ve been given fish, meat gravy, potatoes cooked in lard, Yorkshire puddings cooked in dripping etc because supposed vegetarians have eaten those things. There was one miserable meal where I had boiled carrots, boiled broccoli and peas because everything else had meat in it.

“I’m vegetarian” means something specific. There’s nothing wrong with not being one.

angelaEhen · 09/12/2020 16:55

Vegetarian haggis is really nice, I love it. And all meat eaters enjoy it as well. You can just microwave it they sell it at the deli in waitrose

Excellent! I love veggie haggis but haven’t been able to find it for ages. Waitrose trip tomorrow.

There's no need to be sarky.

You can be a non-meat eater without getting obsessive about it in my experience. I told people I didn't eat meat, but certain of my friends and relatives would assume I'd eat pasta dishes with salami in it or sausage rolls etc, saying oh, it's not like proper meat though, is it? So I had to tell them I was a vegetarian.

Simplyunacceptable · 09/12/2020 17:17

Lots of options. Vegan turkey exists (I buy it for DS every year from Tesco), you can buy a quorn chicken roast too. If they’re not keen on fake meat alternatives then a nut roast, mushroom Wellington, creamy parsnip roulade, cheese and leek pastry? Ask them what they want.

PurpleDaisies · 09/12/2020 17:22

Were your friends really too stupid to understand that “I don’t eat meat” included salami and sausage rolls? It’s amazing that telling them you were veggie made any all difference at all. Perhaps they had seen you eating meat containing products and were confused about your own personal definition of what “I don’t eat meat” meant.

AmandaHoldensLips · 09/12/2020 17:24

I had a sodding vegan round the christmas lunch table last year. NEVER AGAIN.
