Why is everyone referring to "Santa"

DH and I (from different UK countries and different social class) were both brought up with Father Christmas. Why are so many people calling FC "Santa" these days? Is it just the impact of American culture? Each to their own, but I don't like it.

You observe and rank one another on "class"

I don't like it.

AfterSchoolWorry · 08/12/2020 20:31

Yeah, it's Santy as any fule know.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/12/2020 20:32

Because otherwise this meme would be pointless.

It doesn't really matter

ivartheboneless · 08/12/2020 20:33

Always been Santa to me.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/12/2020 20:33

It's regional.

Anything from 'Amercia' was imported to their from other countries originally.

MrsBungle · 08/12/2020 20:34

Always been Santa to me. Santa to my granny too who would’ve been 100!

reginafelangee · 08/12/2020 20:34

I'm Scottish.

The big man has always been called Santa Claus here.

To me Father Christmas is English.

Muckish · 08/12/2020 20:35

I grew up saying Santa and I’m nearly 50 and certainly not from somewhere overburdened by US cultural influence. Is this the Christmas equivalent of the annual posts sneering at Hallowe’en as tawdry and American?

I’m gutted you don’t approve of my terminology, OP. Gutted.

Plussizejumpsuit · 08/12/2020 20:35

I'm 35 it's always been santa or santa Claus. I've never heard anyone call him father Christmas ever. So I'm not sure it's a sudden phenomenon. Also why do you get to decide its father Christmas rather than santa or santa Claus?

ExpensivelyDecorated · 08/12/2020 20:36

Interchangeable here, everyone knows they are the same person.

Smallsteps88 · 08/12/2020 20:36

Because that’s what he’s called.

byebyebeautiful · 08/12/2020 20:36

Why is everyone so goady and obtuse these days? I don't like it.

SupaTrooper · 08/12/2020 20:38

Where does the name Father Christmas come from?

Santa Claus is from Sinter Klaas and the story of St Nicholas.

mathanxiety · 08/12/2020 20:39

Yes, this is the Christmas equivalent of the Hallowe'en sneering at all things ignorantly assumed to be 'American'.

It's Santa Claus in most of the Anglophone world, including wide swathes of the UK.

Father Christmas is a regional thing, closely associated with parts of England.

OhCormoranAllYeFaithful · 08/12/2020 20:39

Was always Santa in my house

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/12/2020 20:40

🎶I saw Mommy kissing Father Christmas, underneath the Christmas tree last niiiiiiggghhhht🎶

🎶Father Christmas, baby, slip a sleigh bell under the tree, for me🎶

Changi · 08/12/2020 20:40

I've used the two interchangeably my whole life.

newnamenancy · 08/12/2020 20:41

Because I'm Scottish

icanboogieboogiewoogie · 08/12/2020 20:41

Always Santa in this house. I'd never heard of this 'Father Christmas' snobbery until I saw it on here.
Mumsnet has all the best snobbery.

Lightningrain · 08/12/2020 20:41

Always been Santa Claus to me and I’m 35. My grandma who would have been in her 80’s now also said Santa Claus so it’s not an age thing.

peboh · 08/12/2020 20:41

As long as I've been alive we've used both Father Christmas and Santa Claus.

Suzi888 · 08/12/2020 20:41

Father Christmas for us!

Someonesayroadtrip · 08/12/2020 20:43

Use both.

Furrybootsyecomfy · 08/12/2020 20:43

We’ve already done this thread.
I’m Scottish- he’s always been Santa Claus to me.
