Ok so I’m after a housewarming present for someone who needs just about everything. They love cooking and baking especially. What have you got in your kitchen that you would hate to part with?

Rice cooker!
I have a cheap one from Argos that is about 10 years old and still works perfectly

TweeBree · 08/12/2020 20:38

Spices are always a safe housewarming gift: www.amazon.co.uk/Apollo-Filled-Schwartz-Spice-including/dp/B002S394BI/?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Microplane graters-they really are fantastic. One portion sized jars for food prep-you can get packs from wilkos. Nicer and last longer than plastic. Good pasta bowls. Sieve-the plastic kind as indestructible compared to the metal and can be used for draining as well as baking. Whustoft 20cm chef knife and sharpener. Green Pan 20cm chefs pan-can be used for most things, 20cm enamel stock pot-really good and cheap until they are able to get le creuset and a nice fun chopping board.

stick blender.
knife sharpener.

In answer to your title - I LOVE my electric tin opener. Best buy in a long time.

However in answer to your opening post, if someone is starting out with nothing, then there are more crucial things you need to start with - kettle / plates / mugs / bowls / cutlery / saucepans / basic utensils /etc /etc etc

Also, depends on lifestyle. If person is out at work all day and has a family, then I'd say a slow cooker. If a SAHP, less crucial. If living on their own, probably wouldn't get that much use from it.

-Electric steamer

-Plastic cheese slicer which doesn’t ever last long but when it’s new is awesome 😂

-various sized trivets for hot pans and trays

-Britta filter jug for fridge

-electric hand mixer....I don’t even bake often but use it also for making batter and other cooking things

-worktop electric can opener

Food thermometer. Takes the guesswork out of cooking and saves having to destroy your food cutting it open to check it's cooked properly before serving

BashfulClam · 08/12/2020 20:49

Spaghetti spoon, amazing for lifting spaghetti and noodles separately.

Nohomemadecandles · 08/12/2020 20:50

I LOVE this. Maybe as part of a present...

Truly changed my garlicky life. And my ginger one too.

Potato ricer - lovely smooth mash

MitziK · 08/12/2020 21:05

A Circulon frying pan with lid. Decent wooden spoons. Measuring jug. Measuring spoons.

onedayiwillmissthis · 08/12/2020 21:08

Bialetti stainless steel Moka coffee maker

DogInATent · 08/12/2020 21:10

Slowcooker, or, a heavy cast iron lidded saucepan (Le Creuset will be out of budget, Tesco won't)
A set of good silicon spatulas, ladles, and a couple of kitchen tongs.
Meat thermometer
Good knife and sharpener (I like Wuesthof)
Maslin pan

mrsfeatherbottom · 08/12/2020 21:16

I couldn't be without my rotary grater - great (grate Smile) for cheese but also carrots and other veg too.

TiggeryBear · 08/12/2020 21:18

My cheese toastie machine! I use it perhaps 300 days a year! Easy lunches, I often chuck leftovers in 🙂 curry is currently my favourite filling 😋 or chilli.

thelegohooverer · 08/12/2020 21:34

I’m not sure what they’re called ... silicone pot lids with the vent flaps that stop pots boiling over.

BearSoFair · 08/12/2020 21:42

Potato ricer. Lumpy mash no more!

shinynewapple2020 · 08/12/2020 21:50

A tin opener Grin

shinynewapple2020 · 08/12/2020 21:50

Also my potato masher.

40somethingJBJ · 08/12/2020 21:52

This pan: www.argos.co.uk/product/7155305

I bought it initially to use on my little gas Cadac bbq (they do a branded paella pan which is double the price but an identical size), but it’s become my favourite pan in the kitchen. Perfect for paella/risotto and big enough for a fry up.

nancybotwinbloom · 08/12/2020 21:53

A slow cooker is such a good call too

Izzy24 · 08/12/2020 22:00

Stick blender.

Glad I looked at this thread because I’ve seen a garlic crusher less than half the price of the one that keeps turning up on Facebook!

Thanks!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 08/12/2020 22:04

An aeropress is my best gadget under £30. I couldn't without it.

Also, Microplane graters are good. An oak headboard should last forever, or maybe a good knife sharpener? Don't buy a knife as they are personal, the user has to try them out to find which one is right for them.

But an Aeropress is definitely the way to go

Joditaylorfan · 08/12/2020 22:07

My best ever buy was a pampered chef tin opener. Sounds weird but it somehow makes tin edges not sharp.
