Ok so I’m after a housewarming present for someone who needs just about everything. They love cooking and baking especially. What have you got in your kitchen that you would hate to part with?

Le creuset spatula and baking trays use them almost daily.

Emile Henry spoon rest and utensils holder .

A set of properly good knives is, imo, the most important thing in any kitchen. Reliable knives are expensive, so if you can't go for a full set, I'd start with a general chopping blade first and build from there.

This. Everytime my DH sees me use it he says “best thing you ever bought” I love it.

I saw it at BBC good food show one year and my mum talked me out of buying it saying it was a waste of money. I purchased it the next year - and so did she! It’s great for garlic, chilli, ginger, anything like that.

CapGunAmmo · 08/12/2020 19:47

Oh wow thanks everyone so many brilliant ideas. These are so helpful and giving me lots to check out.

Meat thermometer - no dry chicken ever again!

2bazookas · 08/12/2020 19:47

@MrPanks

kenwood handheld mixer £27. Fantastic for cakes, batters and the like.
Love it. I bought my first one in the 1970s and it was in frequent use until it died last year. I was utterly delighted to find them still being made, just the same. That's how good they are.

Ooh, a few silicon spatulas, including one for getting g the dregs out from jars.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 08/12/2020 19:57

Definitely my airfryer! I recently upgraded to a larger size and properly love it Grin

FrightClub · 08/12/2020 19:59

I've just bought myself a Joseph Joseph rolling pin similar to the one mentioned above; it's got coloured discs that you adjust to make it easy to roll pastry/biscuit dough to an even level. I've made loads of biscuits trying it out! A nice £20-ish gift for a keen (or young) baker.

Pyewhacket · 08/12/2020 20:00

Kettle

Carriemac · 08/12/2020 20:00

Together come to 2 pence under £30!

evilharpy · 08/12/2020 20:07

A lemon squeezer like this one

This peeler

An aeropress or V60 coffee maker

Heavy pestle & mortar but the inside has to be rough - I've had a smooth polished one that was useless

Electric can opener, Aldi have them this week.
Draining rack
Set of tea towels
Chopping boards
Set of six glasses suitable for whatever is their favourite drink, wine, beer, gin & tonic.

Barmyfarmy · 08/12/2020 20:14

Sturdy mixing bowl set, measuring spoons/cups, maybe a nice ceramic measuring jug, spatulas, scales, hand whisk. Cake stands are always great gifty gifts but more practical gifts might be appreciated. I was in a similar situation and sneakily asked the friend if she needed some plates as I was getting rid of some, she said she had some so I asked if there was anything else she needed as I was having a clear out. Got a full list and that sorted birthday presents.

IsFinnRogersDead · 08/12/2020 20:18

Rotary cheese grater
Jar spatula
Wooden toaster tongs
Zyliss cafetiere mugs
Silicone egg moulds for frying eggs
Flour sifter
Baguette baking tray
Oven thermometer

ChristmasWitch · 08/12/2020 20:19

Coffee maker

TomatoesAreFruit · 08/12/2020 20:23

Potato peeler was my first thought too. Then decent chopping board.

If they love baking, you could plump for measuring scales or a cake tin.

roastedsaltedpeanut · 08/12/2020 20:28

If they love cooking from scratch then essential items: Japanese knife and a sharpener, large solid chopping board, mortar and pestle
If they cook for fun and like all the flares and presentation then essential luxuries: serving plates, creme brûlée ramkins and torch, trifle glass, cake stand, cake plates and forks.

If they are more reader than doers then: cook books with an interesting background story, not just recipes after recipes.
