Last year I went traditional. Year before I did chocolate. This year who knows, I’m open to suggestions.

I can take or leave a jelly layer, not overly evangelical about it either way.

Not fond of a dragee though. Nasty crunchy mouth-feel.

I can't stand the filling in a triffle. I'd like just jelly custard and cream 😂

We never ever have it on Xmas. I don't know why. Think it's because all bar dsd we all like mince pies and Xmas pud. So tend to go for that and a choc pud for dsd

I'm. Now thinking to make a triffle too. I have my late great grandma's big crystal bowl she used to do hers in so may do that hmm

Nuie · 08/12/2020 17:59

We have dh’s late Nain’s crystal bowl with matching smaller serving bowls so I always make a trifle now, in honour of her. It’s a Boxing Day thing in our house. Never eat it at any other time of the year which is a shame as it’s bloody lovely.

Sherry, and plenty of it. Not jelly. Despite a certain... froideur between me and DM, I think a Christmas Truce might be in order to secure the traditional recipe before hostilities resume in Boxing Day

Ginger cake, limoncello
Lemon jelly
Custard if you like it
Cream with ginger syrup through it
Crumbled ginger biscuits & lemon zest on top

BrowncoatWaffles · 08/12/2020 18:07

Ginger custard? Now this I can get behind!

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 08/12/2020 18:11

I am going full on Black Forest Gateau, chocolate cake, cherry brandy ...or amaretto, cherries, the frozen ones are amazing Amaretti biscuits, or savoiiardi, more booze, chocolate custard and cream

no jelly, never jelly.

linerforlife · 08/12/2020 18:11

A thread about trifle? Now this I can get behind. I made a "Black Forest" one last year and it was everything my trifle dreams have ever been. This ginger one also sounds immense. I am also fond of a traditional sponge and strawberry jelly with custard and cream number though, especially if there's plenty of cream!

PurBal · 08/12/2020 18:13

My grandad would tell you that there is no place for jelly in trifle! I ate a huge one in his memory when he died.

m0use · 08/12/2020 18:15

It's birds trifle or nothing in this house

osprey24 · 08/12/2020 18:15

no jelly, lots and lots of Madeira soaked into Madeira cake, ameretto biscuits, custard and lots of wipped cream. Delicious.

TotoroPotoro · 08/12/2020 18:16

I LOVE a Christmas trifle! I'm particularly fond of the jelly and custard combo. However the black forest gateau one sounds AMAZING!

We have inherited two crystal trifle bowls, maybe I'll make both 🤔

Phwooooar · 08/12/2020 18:16

Delta’s trifle is the best ever. No jelly. Truly scrumptious 😋

TheDogsMother · 08/12/2020 18:17

Sorry but trifle is the work of the devil. Custard is grim and cold custard even more grim. Cold jelly !! Wet bits of sponge. Noooooooo !!

PrivateSpidey · 08/12/2020 18:17

Oh wow, the black forest and lemon/ginger sound fab. I usually do a Pavlova but I might do a trifle instead this year...

ikltownofboothlehem · 08/12/2020 18:18

@TheDogsMother - each to their own. We won't disown you for not being a fellow enthusiast Grin

Doublebubblebubble · 08/12/2020 18:19

AuntieMarys · 08/12/2020 18:20

My mum's 1960s trifle involved:
Swiss roll, jelly, tin of strawberries and raspberries.
Home made custard.
Cream.
It was the bollocks. I have her cut glass trifle bowl and have never made it...but I do like a tiramisu trifle ( Good housekeeping recipe)

timtam23 · 08/12/2020 18:20

My mum used to make "hot apricot trifle". Sliced Swiss roll on the bottom, then tinned apricots, then the custard layer, then a layer of home made meringue on the top and the whole thing baked until the meringue is turning golden brown. I never liked traditional trifles but this one was really good.

MavisEnderby74 · 08/12/2020 18:24

Chocolate Swiss roll. Soaked in Cointreau. Mandarin segments. Chocolate orange custard (melted chocolate orange stirred into custard). Double cream. Topped with grated chocolate orange.

WankPuffins · 08/12/2020 18:27

Fuck off the fruit.

Sponge, jelly, cream and custard.

I eat trifle like a toddler. I always leave the fruit.

marthastew · 08/12/2020 18:29

Boudoir biscuits?

FleeceNavidadToEwe · 08/12/2020 18:30

Trifle 😋

Mine is traditional:
Trifle sponges soaked in sweet sherry
Raspberries
Raspberry jelly
Custard
Double cream
Toasted flaked almonds

Els1e · 08/12/2020 18:32

Love Sherry trifle💕

Plump82 · 08/12/2020 18:41

I adore my mums trifle. She manages to get the cream super thick and the custard sets and its always decorated with tinned mandarins and kiwi and grated chocolate.

GameSetMatch · 08/12/2020 18:48

Has anybody please got a quick and easy way to make thick custard for a trifle mine always ends up a bit too runny, is there a good premix I could use?
