Lidl. Bakery. The food is so much better than aldi and they seem to have more names brands

Roselilly36 · 08/12/2020 08:12

Based on my experience of stores close to me, Aldi better range of products, none of those ridiculous fridges were you have to open the door, I have a disability I find these hard to manage when shopping. Fresh produce seems better quality at Aldi.

Bupkiss · 08/12/2020 08:12

Lidl. It could almost be Waitrose, if you squint.
Aldi is just depressing.

KarmaNoMore · 08/12/2020 08:14

It depends, I am so used to cooking with what Aldi has in offer that I really disliked LIDL, as I couldn’t put a full meal together with what they had, ie. sausages but no hot dog bread, chicken and vegs but no curry paste, etc. But I will suppose it is about getting used to it. I didn’t think the prices of a shop in Lidl where much different than from ASDA or Morrison, so if it is about saving money I would pop in for some treats or one off purchases to Lidl but do my normal shopping at ASDA or Aldi.

Woah, there must be some real regional variations then, that is nothing like the situation in my area, unless my nearest Waitrose is the crappest one in the chain Grin

Used to live Aldi - now we have a Lidl nearby I must admit I have switched sides.

The bakery and fruit/veg is great...

So good in fact the young lad working at the green grocer came in and bought up the raspberries in there and took them back down the road.

Skipsurvey · 08/12/2020 08:19

i used aldi since lidl didnt look good, but then tried lidl and am a convert, they have a great selection of veggies and also good price sundried tomatoes.

NotMeNoNo · 08/12/2020 08:20

Both. Can't have too much of a good thing.

Sparklingbrook · 08/12/2020 08:21

Neither but Lidl if I HAD to. I also find Aldi depressing.

BakewellGin1 · 08/12/2020 08:21

Aldi all the way near us... Cleaner, more organised, better stocked and so on...

I guess its like everything and varies store to store

TeddyIsaHe · 08/12/2020 08:22

Lidl. Their weekly foods from around the world are so good. Plus obvs the bakery and their wine is better.

Skipsurvey · 08/12/2020 08:24

i only go there every 6 weeks anyway although i was excited when a saw a lidl on my different way home yesterday

cautiouscovidity · 08/12/2020 08:26

We're very lucky as our local Lidl is only a couple of years old and our Aldi opened this year. Both are lovely, light and airy modern supermarkets that are a world away from the grotty budget stores I used to hate going in with my parents in the late 90s.
Our Lidl has a fab bakery and I prefer it in general to Aldi, so do my weekly shop there . But I do pop into Aldi once a month or so for a few of their own-brand items that I like.

lynsey91 · 08/12/2020 08:33

Lidl by far. For a start they have a bakery which is great. Secondly their fruit and veg is far far better than Aldi's.

Aldi's fruit and veg often looks disgusting and even when it looks ok it never lasts. I have been to Aldi's in Kent, Essex, London, Lincs and Notts and they have all been the same.

We have an Aldi in our local town which I rarely visit but Lidl is opening just after Christmas and I can't wait

ChetChet · 08/12/2020 08:38

Lidl is better. By far.
I love Aldi's deluxe versions of pitta breads, salt and chardonnay vinegar crisps, fancy mint tea bags that knock your block off when you take a whiff of the open box, viennese chocolate finger biscuits, and their bake-at-home pain au chocolat and croissants. Baby wipes are far superior to Lidl's and their 100L bin bags are strong. I go to Aldi for these specifically.

vanillandhoney · 08/12/2020 08:39

Lidl, definitely.

Cornishmendoitdrekkly · 08/12/2020 08:40

Lidl as it is relatively local to us. Love the bakery, fresh veg and fruit and cold meats.
Nearest Aldi is about 15 miles away and every time I have popped in it has been a bit of a mess and dominated by the middle aisles.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 08/12/2020 08:47

Lidl bakery is known to be good. For the rest, I’m sure it depends where you live, the size and age of the store. We have a small local Lidl, which is grubby and horrid, but a big new one recently opened a few miles away and another is being built even closer.

Aldi is a few miles away, is large and has been open a couple of years. It’s where we went until we had to have deliveries. When we can go out to shop again, I’ll try both.

PoppyOppy · 08/12/2020 08:47

I like them both. Wink

I understand what @Bupkiss meant about Lidl could be Waitrose. I think it's the lighting and the wider aisles that do it. Aldi can seem a bit... grubby at the end of a day.

I miss them both. Last time I was in either was in early March. Sad

Redcrayons · 08/12/2020 08:50

Prefer Lidl, mostly for the bakery.

Aldi is closer so I usually go there.

I don't know if this is all over but aldi now do click and collect if that's an option for you

Simplyunacceptable · 08/12/2020 09:17

I like Lidl’s bakery but find them disappointing for a few things, they don’t have as broad a selection as Aldi does.

Simplyunacceptable · 08/12/2020 09:19

Sadly not the case in many areas just yet.

Aldi for a really good Reisling for under a fiver and for their Jo Malone candle dupes.

Lidl for everything else except meat.
