ALDI or LIDL ?

Which do you prefer and why ?

lidls bakery is excellent, and aldi dont have one, but for most other things I prefer aldi. Lidls coffee is rubbish. All of it, whereas aldi java coffee is amazing. Lidl never has oat milk, but aldi does and its nice

MyCatShopsAtAldi · 08/12/2020 09:52

I actually think Aldi meat has improved in recent years - I would never have bought it from there either, but they have a good range of free-range chicken in my local one and are starting to expand into outdoor-reared pork. I must admit, I probably wouldn’t buy mince in there (I haven’t forgotten the horse meat row a few years ago!) but “meat meat” is much better than I expected.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 08/12/2020 10:00

Lidl far better here. Our Aldi was refurbished earlier in the year and I had high hopes of improvement, but no, it didn't make much difference.

movingonup20 · 08/12/2020 10:02

I do both as they both have advantages, Lidl has the bakery, better packaged bread and veg not in plastic, Aldi has better cheese, chocolate pots, wine and ready meals if I'm cheating. We go to Waitrose if we are feeling flush as that's also close by (they are within 500m of each other.

InDubiousBattle · 08/12/2020 10:03

We have both in our small town and I prefer Lidl for most things but go to Aldi for their blue eggs, pasta sauce for ds and prosecco. I also think that Aldi's special aisle stuff is better than Lidl. In non covid times the kids like Lidl for the little trollies.

ttigerlilly · 08/12/2020 10:04

Lidl Smile

Einszwei · 08/12/2020 10:07

I have had to switch to ALDI recently because I have moved and I really miss the quality of Lidl products.

WithASpider · 08/12/2020 10:07

Aldi probably, although they're both good round here. Aldi has a much better Gluten Free range.

I won't buy meat from Lidl since i discovered their pork comes from Barn-raised pigs. I buy from a local butcher now who gets his meat from a nearby farm.

KaleKitchen · 08/12/2020 10:17

Lidl all the way. Smile I love their Deluxe range, their Alesto nuts are fabulous, their Greek yoghurt, cottage cheese, pine nuts(!!), etc.

Shelby30 · 08/12/2020 10:46

I think Aldi overall. Lidl has good toys and the bakery is good. I prefer the actual food in Aldi like the nappies and baby wipes too. If I did a shop in both I buy a lot more in Aldi. I've found I don't end up buying a full shop in Lidl and end up having to elsewhere too.

TheSandman · 08/12/2020 10:54

Both. I love the fact that neither of them play fecking musak at you as you shop. But I recently discovered THE difference between the two.

You know the annoying, "We are opening till number two for you..." pre- recorded woman that suddenly starts talking from the ceiling from time to time? In Lidl's she starts by saying, "Dear customer..." In Aldi she says, "Dear customers... ".

That 'S' makes all the difference. Makes Lidl's more personal.

... or is it the other way round ...?

SpeckledyHen · 08/12/2020 11:30

Thanks everyone. There is a new LIDL in town so will give it a try . The Aldi store in town is a bit grotty and parking is a nightmare.

I like the comments about Waitrose:) this is where I do all my food shopping but buy cleaning products etc from Aldi . Have tried their fruit and veg but it’s never fresh enough.

Aldi.

Cheaper, better selection, no flies on the open bakery...

Imapotato · 08/12/2020 11:50

Lidl for the bakery and pizzas, Aldi for more or less everything else.

EvilPea · 08/12/2020 11:52

It really varies from store to store. My aldi was shit and lidl was brilliant, several staff changes and make overs later and it’s now aldi that’s great and lidl terrible.

H1978 · 08/12/2020 12:00

Aldi because they stock more of the things I like but Lidl bakery is the best.

Mumtumwobble · 08/12/2020 12:02

Much prefer Lidl. It has more banded items, plus the bakery is lovely. My Lidl is quite a new store though so it’s nicer to shop in than some of the older ones.

drumst1ck · 08/12/2020 12:14

I tend to shop Aldi just for convenience but I do love the Lidl bakery! Haven't tried enough Lidl stuff to tell you either way with quality though.

Darklane · 08/12/2020 14:13

Both
I can do virtually a full shop in Aldi. I have two really good ones within reach, one brand new, one revamped. I like lots of things, cheese, meat, gin, basics like pasta, rice, condiments, cleaning stuff, most things really apart from their bread. Personally haven’t found any difference between them & Lidl regarding fruit & veg. I especially love the way you can be in & out in record time . Rarely have to queue as they have plenty of tills open, & open more if busy. This is where my local Lidl fails badly. It isn’t a new store, bit jaded, but you can wait ages to check out as they rarely have more than one till open & don’t open more than one extra even if queues are building, most remaining frustratingly closed.
But I do gin, it’s only across the road from Aldi, for certain things, nuts, yoghurts, huge tinned peach halves in juice, biscuits, stir fry sauces, some of their specials

MercyBooth · 08/12/2020 16:41

Only have a Lidl near me. No Aldi I go there to get Beanies Coffee when they have a promotion on. Sainsburys only stock the bloody Irish Cream flavour.

Crankley · 08/12/2020 16:42

Neither, they both resemble jumble sales.

I burst out laughing at the suggestion that Lidl could almost be Waitrose. Last time I went to Waitrose, there weren't piles of boxes, it didn't have a pile of crap in the middle of the store, the products were recognisable and people picked up pastries with tongs, not their fingers. God knows how many people had touched a pastry before it was bought. Then my friend who wanted us to go to Lidle was shocked I didn't buy anything. I can only assume they had never set foot inside a Waitrose.

PontiacBandit · 08/12/2020 16:44

I prefer Aldi, ours is huge and has great choice but it is further away than Lidl so shop more often there.

TheSandman · 08/12/2020 16:59

You're welcome, Hilda Ogden.

TheSandman · 08/12/2020 20:19

Wrong sex, but Jeso! that was the most middle-class, snobby thing I've read in weeks.
