Does anyone else hate walking?

I bloody detest it. I can walk around city centre with things to look at or walk to somewhere but I hate just going somewhere. I know that it's good for you but I still don't enjoy it. People say that it makes them feel better afterwards but that isn't true for me. I'm just glad that it's over.

It doesn't help that I have disabilities. My balance can be poor, and getting out in near impossible when icy,and I trip a lot. Also my ankle just suddenly "goes" which is painful, my knee locks and I have nerve damage so my leg can randomly go numb. But even before some of those occurred(Other disability is life long) I never enjoyed it.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Me. Walking to something or around a new place etc is lovely. 'Going for a walk' is a tedious waste of my time.

MustardMitt · 06/12/2020 13:52

I am SO with you on this!

I just do not understand walking for the sake of walking. It makes no sense to me, I don’t find it relaxing or fun or anything other than a chore.

I don’t have disabilities, I just don’t like it. The enforced Christmas Day walk is just bollocks. I don’t want to walk I want to veg on the sofa, semi-comatose Grin

Nice scenery makes all the difference imho

Just going somewhere should say Just going for a walk for the sake of it.

I'm glad that I'm not alone. It makes me feel better. I have more than one friend who is obsessed with walking and one is constantly bugging me about it and insisting that it'll make me feel better. I've tried it and no it really doesn't make me feel better or happier. I hate every minute of it.

I have nice scenery where I am. It's still shit.

I'm with you op. I hate going out for an aimless walk with no purpose, which has been difficult during lockdown, particularly in town. Even surrounded by beautiful countryside though, I need a dog at my side.

I feel for you though because balance issues are the pits. I have had the odd balance related illness (thankfully temporary) and I've found it really destroys your confidence and of course it's a hidden disability while it is happening, so other people aren't particularly understanding. So I don't blame you at all for being less than enthusiastic about walks.

Would an indoor walking machine help (so you could hold on to the sides and watch TV or listen to music at the same time)? Or one at the gym when they are open? Also, I was shown around a gym once where people with limited mobility were cycling on a machine from a seated position.

Or how about a few sessions with riding for the disabled when things are back to normal? I used to volunteer and it's a really fantastic confidence booster, very good for balance issues and it's a great way to travel at a slow pace, where you see lots of wildlife you wouldn't see on foot.

Thefirstnohell · 06/12/2020 14:14

Sorry that last suggestion about riding is a bit out there, but I am horse obsessed so please ignore! (I have seen great results from it though.)

Another suggestion is learning a language or listening to a podcast about a subject you are interested in, and instead of sitting while learning, walking outside instead. Then the focus is on the subject matter and the walking bit seems less important.

TheSqueakyWheel · 06/12/2020 14:18

I won't ignore it. I think it's a brilliant idea and something that I'd really enjoy. I never thought of myself as being "disabled enough" though I'm also autistic. It's something I'll definitely look into once some normality has resumed. Thank you very much for suggesting it.

Not to me! I love landscapes and scenery, but I don't want to walk in them. Preferably not ever.
unsure111 · 06/12/2020 14:20

I hate/despise/dread walking. I get so paranoid, sweaty beyond belief. The school walk ruins my morning everyday and it's only a 10 min walk but I hate the scenery it's so boring. If I was walking with someone else I don't mind it but good god I HATE walking. I'm so glad there's people like me.

WorraLiberty · 06/12/2020 14:22

No I love it.

I love local parks, country parks, forests etc too. Every time I walk round my local parks I tell myself I'll do it more often but then 'life happens' Grin

But I always feel better for it. It's lovely to see the same parks in different seasons and to appreciate nature.

TheSqueakyWheel · 06/12/2020 14:23

Thefirstnohell Thank you too for the other suggestions.

Thank you - I thought I was the only one. I find it really boring too and cold. Having said that, I love running and cycling etc.
I really hate it when I visit friends and family and they suggest a walk. Id rather stay cosy and warm indoors

Thefirstnohell · 06/12/2020 14:35

Oh well in that case squeaky here's how to look for a group local to you:

here.

Unfortunately (like many charities) they are going through hard times owing to Covid-19 ATM and have launched a resilience fund this Christmas to keep things running.

As for who qualifies, I know there is a lot of demand, but also the definition of disability is thankfully expanding. Have a look at hippoherapy links on their website too.

And this link is about equine therapies for autism-related issues:

Good luck Flowers

CapGunAmmo · 06/12/2020 14:35

I really don’t like going for a walk. It’s less of a thing on holiday or staying with family as they live in lovely places and everything is different . But at home it’s boring, either too hot, too cold, too wet or too windy. It’s the only exercise I can do though due to a weird condition so I feel extra guilty that I don’t make enough of an effort to get out for a regular walk. I love mooching round shops, little villages and towns and stopping for a drink or something to eat. But walking for the sake of walking is not my idea of a nice way to spend time sadly.

TheSqueakyWheel · 06/12/2020 14:36

Thefirstnohell Thank you so much. I really appreciate your kindness. Thanks

lifestooshort123 · 06/12/2020 14:48

Me, I never walk anywhere.

GazOnABender · 06/12/2020 14:53

Completely!
Walk around shops ✅
Walk around stately homes ✅
Walk for the sake of it 🥱

PickAChew · 06/12/2020 14:59

I have HMS which gives me painful joints and makes me prone to stumbling and losing balance and I really feel it when I don't get out and walk because I lose the muscle tone that helps to keep my joints stable. I really struggle when it's icy and I can't safely get out for a good stride. (not that it's much of a stride, any more, as my hips aren't what they used to be)

I need good supportive shoes, though, with arch support and a wide toe box so my toes don't bend all wrong.

PickAChew · 06/12/2020 15:01

I fire up pokemon go before I walk anywhere, BTW. Sometimes it motivates me to go the long way around.

trappedsincesundaymorn · 06/12/2020 15:11

I don't mind walking if I'm somewhere new or shopping (or going to the pub), but walking for the sake of it? No thanks.

Floralnomad · 06/12/2020 15:16

I walk daily , generally a long way with my dog , if I didn’t have a dog I wouldn’t go for a walk unless it was at a NT / EH place . Scenery in general would make no difference , I would prefer to drive through it .

HunterHearstHelmsley · 06/12/2020 15:48

I can never see the point in just walking for the sake of it. I don't mind if I am walking to somewhere. Its just boring. In the first lockdown this year, the idea of a daily walk was awful!
