What era / decade do you believe to be the most beautiful?

I think the 1960s was probably the most beautiful era in my eyes, despite having no link to the 1960s at all.
What is your favourite era and why?

(Just curious for everyone who will might be tempted to shout "reporter" Wink)

The 20s and 30s. Although I'm short and curvy, the clothes would have looked terrible on me!

berrygirlie · 05/12/2020 23:52

Me too, @IdblowJonSnow! Maybe that's why I'm more attracted to the 60s, I'd look like a cardboard box in a flapper dress Grin
(very beautiful though, definite connotations of glam in the 20s for me)

We are 3 out of 3. Saw the thread title and also immediately thought 20s!
I'm flat chested, so I think those flapper dresses would have suited me, though.

Quite a lot of 60s fashion was stealing from the 20s I think.

I also am very fond of the early 90s grunge/brit pop look. Which, ironically has links to the kindof mop top 60s!

And I live a goth, no matter what the decade!

ClearingSpaceOnTheTrophyShelf · 05/12/2020 23:59

Love. Doh!

berrygirlie · 06/12/2020 00:03

@ClearingSpaceOnTheTrophyShelf

Yes there are many parts of 90s grunge I enjoy as well - not sure if anyone remembers My So Called Life but I always thought Rayanne had a very interesting fashion sense (though I suppose only quite loosely grungey!)

I'm always tempted to do a Siouxsie Sioux gothic makeup look but I chicken out!

20s too. I listen to the music from 20s, 30s and 40s mainly. I love it. I think I used to live during that era before I was reincarnated Grin

I’m also too round for the clothes style, especially dropped waist dresses. I’d have looked awful!

june2007 · 06/12/2020 00:11

I don,t, their are proes and cons to everthing.

berrygirlie · 06/12/2020 00:15

@LongPauseNoAnswer
It seems the 20s are a common favourite! I wonder if there's any correlation between parental age and favourite era (not to be presumptuous!). I remember listening to my father's music when I was younger, which I remember loving and has definitely influenced both my style and my music taste. Would be an interesting thing to study I think!

(though I absolutely agree, short hair, thin eyebrows and square dresses would probably do me no favours Grin)

I don,t, their are proes and cons to everthing.
Do you not have a specific style influence though, or a time where you thought things were most beautiful, @june2007? (obviously ignoring ethical / moral relationships with specific eras, moreso just focusing on aesthetics!)

1920s or 1950s.

Madhairday · 06/12/2020 00:25

50s. Love the dresses, the emerging rock and roll music and dancing. I always wanted to live in Back to the Future or Grease for those aspects. Not so much the sexism, racism etc etc...

jambeforeclottedcream · 06/12/2020 00:29

My body shape would say 1950s
My heart would say 20s

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 06/12/2020 00:35

The French Renaissance era. Everything was so ridiculously ornate and beautiful. I want to live in a house with big oil paintings and chandeliers. And the massive skirts would be great for hiding my hips. Of course, I would have to dodge the peasants on the streets when heading for my carriage and avoid the guillotine.

Will0wtree · 06/12/2020 00:39

I see your 1920s and raise you the 1790s (Poldark, Interview with the Vampire, The Scarlet Pimpernel...)

(More glamorous for the well off obviously, but then that's the same in any era)

Ritascornershop · 06/12/2020 00:44

I like the 1930’s actually, the women’s clothes were more feminine in shape (I am not flat chested so grant that the 20’s looked great on some but disastrous for a lot of us), the materials were lovely, the colours subtle and natural. The clothes looked a lot more comfy than the Edwardian era-through Great War, which would be my second choice. The calf length skirts and sailor collars and great coats from the First War were lovely.

PirateCatQueen · 06/12/2020 00:49

The future.

sofiaaaaaa · 06/12/2020 00:50

Honestly, this one.

I’m in my early 20s and could definitely say that I wouldn’t have suited being alive in the past. Give me alllll the tech and more relaxed attitudes to life.

berrygirlie · 06/12/2020 00:50

Not keen on any fashion yet, @PirateCatQueen?
How about this? Grin

What era / decade do you believe to be the most beautiful?
OP posts:
berrygirlie · 06/12/2020 00:51

Me too, @sofiaaaaaa - of course it would be unwise (and potentially suicidal) to actively want to be part of these eras. This thread is solely for the beauty, not the morality / ethics / circumstances of these eras!

wozzerree · 06/12/2020 01:05

I would have loved the fashion & decadence of the 20s. 2nd fave is the 60s.

AlwaysLatte · 06/12/2020 01:19

I love the1930s architecture

PirateCatQueen · 06/12/2020 01:21

Those pictures are from the past @berrygirlie

You said “most beautiful” not “contains any aesthetic merit whatsoever”.

berrygirlie · 06/12/2020 01:23

I was joking, @PirateCatQueen, ignore my sense of humour. What do you think the future's fashion will look like?

OP posts:
PirateCatQueen · 06/12/2020 01:31

Fair enough @berrygirlie.

I think I mean one of the things I enjoy most about fashion/culture is anticipation and discovery, looking forward to what’s new. That feeling you get when you see something you can’t reference, so you feel the genuine newness.

You never know when the next genius will come along.

And you can often recognise those who were groundbreaking in their own era, even if that era is long past, even if their ideas went on to be a new orthodoxy in time. It’s that flash of genuine creativity, real insight.

berrygirlie · 06/12/2020 01:34

Can I rephrase the question to; "What is your favourite previous era and why?" @PirateCatQueen Grin

Of course there will be many incredible fashion styles and aesthetic choices in the future but I am not enough of a creative genius to understand and predict them yet, unfortunately! I'm excited for the journey too, I'm curious to see what the next generations enjoy wearing.

themental · 06/12/2020 01:37

Can I choose ancient greece/ roman type era? I'm probably COMPLETELY historically inaccurate but just thinking about the long swathey maxi-dresses, the pinned curls, etc etc.

If we're talking last century... probably the 60s!
