Balsam Hill tree - Rubbish!!

For the past few years I have wanted a balsam hill tree. I had read so many good things about them and had often spent £50-£70 on a real tree to then dump in my compost bin in January.

I didn't want to splash too much cash so I bought one that was £200.

Well it was rubbish!!! It's going straight back on Monday. I have replaced it today with a £40 real one.

Anyone else not pleased with theirs?

I love our BH tree. It took a while the first time to place all the branches and make it a nice full shape. I put ours up yesterday- took 5 mins this time as branches all still pretty fluffed up despite being stored for a year. Pop the three pieces together and done.

FinallyHere · 05/12/2020 21:27

Most if the trees you see on TV in need studios are BH. I agree that they take a lot of 'fluffing' but I've always loved the results.

Is the one pictured by OP perhaps a new, 'modern' shape ?

isitxmasalready · 05/12/2020 21:28

Is this the one you have ordered- Alpine? it looks pretty sparse on the website tbh. Don't think you would ever get the real and full look with that one with any amount of fluffing up! Your real one is much better!

We’ve had ours for a few years and love it. Yours looks really odd OP like there’s not enough branches to fluff up!
Ours doesn’t take more than 15-20 mins but it’s a 6ft one.

Yes that's the one isitxmasalready I just expected more for £200. It looks cheap.

I know it is wasn't one of the bushy ones but it looks awful! I spent ages floofing it too.

Agree, the picture in the ad looks exactly like OP's pic.
Bluntness100 · 05/12/2020 21:33

Yes, which one was it op? Is it the alpine one? Becayse that does look sparse by design.

Indoctro · 05/12/2020 21:34

It's because you bought a most realistic tree . They are a bit sparse looking, like real trees are , it's actually meant to look that.

You need the ones that are half and half with a high needle count

Bluntness100 · 05/12/2020 21:36

Yes. These are two on the site, one is like the ops ans is sparse by design, the other is like the one I have, and the other posters, much fuller, the fuller one is more expensive though.

But you’d know that when you order it, it’s clear on the images.

Mine is beautiful.

Also not just the images, but the description even says it’s sparse.

Is your new tree, the one you are happier with, alpine style like your BH one? If not I feel like you wanted the full style BH look and bought the wrong type of tree. The alpine tree image online looks like the one you had so in my mind there's no false advertisement there.

girlcrushonvillanelle · 05/12/2020 21:41

I'm not saying there is false advertisement, I'm just saying that I really expected something nicer. It just looks really cheap and nasty. Not at all worth the £200 price tag.

Floralnomad · 05/12/2020 21:42

Well you’ve obviously bought the wrong type for the look you want . We’ve got 2 BH trees , a small alpine and a 7’ slim Fraser and they do look very different to each other (irrespective of size ) . You do need to spend quite a while sorting them out the first year .

Why did you order that one though ? It’s a very sparse design. And it’s clear that’s what it is. It clearly isn’t what you wanted.

They aren’t cheap and nasty by any means. You got the one you picked. It seems you wanted a full one though, so why didn’t you just order a full one?

treet1me · 05/12/2020 21:43

@isitxmasalready @girlcrushonvillanelle

I have that exact tree and it looks bloody lovely

TinySongstress · 05/12/2020 21:45

There's some beautiful trees on here. Well done folks 👏

Mine is a sparser alpine type, I love it in all its quirkiness it has its own 'Whoville' type beauty.

MutteringDarkly · 05/12/2020 21:45

Oo I have that tree and love it, but deliberately chose that shape. Love your dressing of it @treet1me

girlcrushonvillanelle · 05/12/2020 21:46

I thought that it would look more natural than it did. We didn't want a big bushy one (despite now buying a bushy real one). We have quite limited space so I thought it would be ideal. I was just disappointed with the fact quality.

Thank you! It's a shame I can't photograph the ornaments very well!
girlcrushonvillanelle · 05/12/2020 21:47

@treet1me that looks lovely? Maybe I should have fully dressed it.

Really take ages to pull the branches around and don't be shy with it. I really pulled out every single branch xx

Floralnomad · 05/12/2020 21:48

@treet1me that looks lovely , I purposely chose the small alpine for my husbands workspace now he’s wfh to festive him up a bit but we wanted something that would sit on a sideboard and not be too overpowering . It looks lovely dressed .

Bluntness100 · 05/12/2020 21:49

Tree, it does look lovely there. It’s supposed to look like natural trees on the mountains which it does,

Very odd thread, it’s like posting I’ve always wanted a black all saints leather jacket and then ordering a red one and saying well that looks shite, it’s friggen red! I’m really disappointed.

treet1me · 05/12/2020 21:49

It's a lovely shape tree. Wonder why it's gone out of favour generally speaking? I see most people prefer the bushier ones. All trees are beautiful though!
