Things that irrationally annoy you in films?

I’ll start

Brand new baby born...size of a 3 month old, wide awake and smiling

Always annoys me

@CatsGoPurrrr

Christmas Rom-Coms set in twee American small towns with Christmassy-names, a wise stranger that looks like Santa and lots of snow.

People drinking out of empty cups.

Practically all children in movies are 12 and under. No one has a stroppy 15 year old.

When people ply electric guitars in movies/music vids and there are no cables connecting the guitar to the amp.

Re the Christmas films set in twee American towns - I LOVE THEM - easy watching on a free afternoon with crochet on my lap.

Horses that are in 20th century/21st century tack without any attempt to make it look authentically medieval.

Ditto using a light thoroughbred type for jousting. . .

Sgtmajormummy · 06/12/2020 18:12

Overdone period costumes.
Not everybody could afford to dress in the latest fashions of the day or the finest fabrics.
I want to see dowagers in ball gowns from 40 years before.
Farmers wearing clumsily homespun linen. Factory workers in fifth-hand clothing.
And don’t get me started on the shoes! Most people would have worn wooden clogs or hobnail boots for walking. Not the ballet slippers you see in Jane Austen films.

I also get irrationally angry about modern crockery in period films...

When goodies and baddies are shooting at each other, one goodie can shoot and kill all the baddies, but all the baddies are poor shots and either miss the goodie altogether or maybe just graze him lightly.

mbosnz · 06/12/2020 18:15

Reckon we need to hire a theatre for a screening session?!

Twospaniels · 06/12/2020 18:19

@Toilenstripes

When the kids look nothing like their parents. No resemblance whatsoever. It’s like, no the two of you did not produce this child!
Ross’s son Ben on Friends. No way did a swarthy dark man father the pale blonde blue eyed kid.

And often siblings bear no resemblance to each other. There were sisters in Hollyoaks a while back, Leila, and a dark haired woman, forget her name.

Characters in the early stages of pregnancy feeling completely fine and full of energy, then randomly vomiting, then feeling completely normal again afterwards.

Instead of the debilitating constant nausea and fatigue.

The stormtroopers in Star Wars are notoriously poor shots.

Foreign language, as in the small parts of spoken foreign language being wrong

This is a tiny and the only criticism of my all time favourite series Crash Landing on You - when the 2nd male lead played by Kim Jung Hyun says he went to boarding school in Britain. If that were the case his English would have been far better (judging from the few sentences he spoke in English)

The way ‘Princess Anne’ held the reins in The Crown (I haven’t watched it but I saw a photo) but maybe that’s too niche a complaint.

mbosnz · 06/12/2020 18:48

I don't watch the Crown Andante57, but I can imagine! I share your pain. . .

rslsys · 06/12/2020 18:54

Tyres squealing when they are driving on sand.

Inappropriate tech kit - earliest example is Quatermass looking at an Avo Valve tester for inspiration. Don't even get me started on computers/comms kit in later films (yes - I'm a geek).

Nobody ever has the shits or the need for a Duvet day. No characters with children ever get a call from the school to come and collect their child which has just projectile vomited across reception.

Many years ago, they had an F1 race around the streets of Birmingham. There was a groundswell of opinion that they should have left the traffic lights and pedestrian crossings operational.
No car chase ever gets stopped by a Lollipop person or roadworks.

drumandthebass · 06/12/2020 20:00

When things are filmed in the wrong season. For instance they're laying in the park having a picnic in sun dresses and there's no leaves on the trees. Particularly annoying when Christmas films are filmed in the summer and everyone's wearing scarves

BananaHammock23 · 06/12/2020 20:14

People in mega posh houses doing the washing up. Surely they'd have a dishwasher?

InterfectoremVulpes · 06/12/2020 20:35

When a newly married couple are looking around a house they want to buy, and the wife is always "are you sure we can afford this" like they hadn't worked out a budget beforehand.

AppleCrumbleForBreakfast · 06/12/2020 20:45

People eating. Overacting sandwich eating is rife. Brad Pitt (who I normally rate) is particularly guilty of this.

DrDavidBanner · 06/12/2020 20:49

Humongous houses, kids in fair to middling income houses have bedrooms the size of my whole ground floor

CandidaAlbicans2 · 06/12/2020 20:53

Using the wrong breed of dog or horse for the time period or country. For example, in one drama about Guy Fawkes there was a scene where he was pursued by guards with...Rottweilers! Absolute rubbish seeing as the breed didn’t even appear in Britain until the 1930s.

CPR being done wrong. I know they can’t really do it on an actor but surely they could use a mannequin or make it look more realistic. In one drama they were doing it whilst the hospital bed wasn't even flat and all they were doing was bending and straightening their arms 🙄😆

Long hair down and lab coats not done up in labs. Nope, it goes against basic H&S.

When someone has been knocked out but when they come round they’re completely lucid and able to carry on as though nothing has happened. No concussion, no nausea or dizziness.

Maverick cops. When being told by their boss that they have to work with so and so, they say “I work alone”, or they’re constantly in trouble for not following the rules. WTF, you’ll do as your superior officer tells you or you’ll be out of a job you twat!

DeeCeeCherry · 06/12/2020 21:04

Male lead's female romantic interest being there to just do wide eyed shock, scream (in full make up), and run in inappropriate heels when they're in caves or in the desert (just what you'd choose to wear). & Whilst he's dragging her along they're wisecracking...! As you would, with a 20ft demonic monster chasing you wouldn't you, instead of shitting a brick, saving your breath and getting the hell out of there before you're eaten alive🙄

BorderlineHappy · 06/12/2020 21:18

Humongous houses, kids in fair to middling income houses have bedrooms the size of my whole ground floor

And yet when they have a row, the man sleeps on the smallest sofa known to man.

Ha yep

Re op any scene with tooth brushing.

Thefirstnohell · 06/12/2020 21:51

Female lead in rom coms walking oh so slowly down the pavement. Drives me nuts! Just walk at a normal pace fhs!

Ltdannygreen · 06/12/2020 22:21

When something is fall8ng on top of someone or coming towards them, like a car for example and they just stand there and stare 🤦🏼‍♀️

RunningFromInsanity · 06/12/2020 22:41

People wearing shoes in their house. Especially women who seem to wear heels inside all evening...

KatherineJaneway · 07/12/2020 06:43

People always answer the door immediately. How often are you right next to the door when someone knocks / rings.
