Aeropress

Does anyone have one of these?

I was thinking about getting one of these for dh to take to work as he loves his coffee, but is it a faff? I notice they have a travel version too. He doesn't have much time for breaks so needs to be really quick to make a good espresso!

It’s very quick to make a cup of coffee. It compresses the grounds into a disc which is very easy and clean to bin. Much less messy than a cafetière. It doesn’t really make espresso, it’s not as strong as that. I didn’t really like the coffee it made, to be honest.

JobBollocks · 04/12/2020 10:46

I got given one a couple of Christmases ago and couldn't get on with it at all. I ended up giving it to someone else who also didn't like it - but I know there are some people who swear by them.

PurpleDaisies · 04/12/2020 10:47

I absolutely love mine. Used it twice already this morning.

PurpleDaisies · 04/12/2020 10:48

I agree I don’t think it’s the best for espresso. I use mine for black coffee.

ThatLibraryMiss · 04/12/2020 10:57

I got one when my Nespresso machine died. It makes good coffee quickly and it's easy to clean, and no pods to throw away/recycle.

I also got one of these grinders, so freshly-ground coffee every day. I use Aldi's Roast Master espresso beans.

TurquoiseDragon · 04/12/2020 11:24

I like mine, but I wouldn't be drinking espresso. Easy to use and clean.

Sparticle · 04/12/2020 11:31

I bought one for my coffee-loving husband a couple of years ago and he loves it. His espresso machine broke a couple of months ago and he has been using the aeropress exclusively since then.

(Until he finally fixed his machine last week after I have just bought him a new batch of aeropress-sized ground coffee and a load of new filters for it for Christmas!)

Sparticle · 04/12/2020 11:32

He does make black americanos out of his though, which is basically an espresso plus extra hot water?

Thesunrising · 04/12/2020 11:35

They are great. I’ve had mine for 5/6 years and use it everyday. With a good quality coffee that’s ground fine enough it does great espresso as well as regular. It packs away, you can take it on holiday, nothing can break or really go wrong and I’m only just needing after 5 years to get a replacement rubber plunger seal. You need a strong arm - that’s the only potential barrier to use!

Rayna37 · 04/12/2020 11:42

My husband bought one to use in the camper van and loves it- he drinks black Americano style coffee. Not as good as the spendy Sage I just got him for his 50th but for outside the home it's much easier and better results than a cafetière.

MouseholeCat · 04/12/2020 13:04

We love ours. I also introduced it to my Dad and he swears by it. Nicer coffee than a french press for sure.

SpikeDearheart · 04/12/2020 13:29

I love mine, but I use it for americano style rather than espresso. I think it makes a very clean tasting coffee, plus it's quick and easy to use and clean.

IRunLikeJoeBiden · 04/12/2020 13:47

DP has one and loves it. He ignores the dosage on the tube though, and just chucks loads in.

PurpleDaisies · 04/12/2020 13:50

Yes, I just add a big spoon of coffee and fill it up to the top. That gets me a full cup of essentially americano.
diplodocusinermine · 04/12/2020 13:54

Use ours when we’re out and about, DH has one for work. Better than French press, easy to use and clean.

ARoseInHarlem · 04/12/2020 13:58

It’s a bit of a faff at work I think. You need to rinse out the plunger bit immediately and leave it to air dry, else it smells (and might actually get?) mouldy. You need the three parts of the aero press itself, coffee, filter, mug, kettle, sink to clean it all out in. Lots of paraphernalia.

Honestly, I’d make coffee at home and invest in a very good quality flask.

canigooutyet · 04/12/2020 14:02

I ignore the dosage on all coffee. Some say one spoon and you end up with rank tasting hot water, and think if this is the shite some people hae tried no wonder they don't like water.
Others one spoon and might as well just eaten the coffee!

I use my Aeropress when I'm away from home. Easy to use, not a lot of faff, quick, little mess and doesn't take up a load of space.

At home it varies cos I have too much choice due to an addiction to coffee machines and gadgets.

Although the best non electric coffee maker is the hob boiled one imo. It's the one I always fall back on.

canigooutyet · 04/12/2020 14:04

The French Press/Cafetiere insulated mugs can also be very good, but takes some research reading the reviews.

superoz · 04/12/2020 17:43

So after reading everyone’s replies I am still undecided.

Dh loves his coffee, he was using a stovetop until recently then he inherited an unwanted coffee machine from his friend.

So can the Aeropress make a decently strong coffee? Some say yes and others no. If it can’t then there’s no point in me getting one.

The travel one seems pointless as the are small anyway. DP had one for years till he lost it on holiday Sad

James Hoffman has good videos on YouTube, might help (he owns a coffee roasters and is an expert)

MaverickDanger · 04/12/2020 17:49

DH loves his, that and a milk frother are hands down the best present I’ve ever managed to buy him.

It’s really easy to use, easy to clean and store. He likes strong coffee but also uses it to make cappuccinos for me.

olderthanyouthink · 04/12/2020 17:49

@superoz I asked DP he said "no, it's nothing like espresso"

PurpleDaisies · 04/12/2020 17:55

So can the Aeropress make a decently strong coffee?

Yes, but a strong long black coffee, not an espresso.

NotMeNoNo · 04/12/2020 18:26

You get a better strength with a fine espresso ground coffee.
We have both the travel and normal version, have given away our pod machine.

jcurve · 04/12/2020 18:43

We use our aeropress when we travel. It’s extremely easy to clean - just pop the grounds off the end, rinse the rubber bung end of residual grounds, and you’re done. You don’t need to rinse the whole thing.

I use the measuring spoon that came with it. It’s quite a strong coffee, you can make it stronger using finer grounds as NotMeNoNo said.
