Can you recommend really tasty cheddar cheese?

I've bought port for a relative's Christmas present. This was something they suggested when I asked if there was something they wanted. I thought I'd add in some cheese & crackers, but the only cheese they like is Cheddar. I love cheese and go through pounds of Cheddar but just supermarket's own mature. Can anyone recommend a really tasty Cheddar that looks a bit nicer? I know you can buy wax covered truckles at Christmas but first and foremost it's about taste, hence wanting tried and tested suggestions.
Thank you

Black Bomber from Snowdonia Cheese

Sparklingbrook · 04/12/2020 08:45

Black Bomber (Snowdonia Cheese Company)is amazing. Its' strong so you might want to sample a bit first but I have never found another Cheddar as good. I get it from the Cheese counter at Waitrose.

There’s a cheddar called Tickler that you can get in a lot of supermarkets that’s lovely and tangy and got that nice texture to it,

Barbers cheddar

ApolloandDaphne · 04/12/2020 08:48

I love Black Bomber too and you can buy it in a truckle. I have one in my fridge right now.

Mull of Kintyre Cheddar.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 04/12/2020 08:49

Yes to the Snowdonia one, it's amazing. We do like Tickler too but Snowdonia is better. We get it at a farm shop.

Of they aren't massive cheese fans I'd avoid the fancy stronger ones. A nice Orkney cheddar is delicious but still creamy.

Black bomber or Wookey hole cave aged

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 04/12/2020 09:01

Wow that was quick! Thank you all

Another vote for Black Bomber. Best cheese in the world.

Hoppinggreen · 04/12/2020 09:01

Yes to Black bomber, I was just going to say the welsh one in black wax because I couldn’t remember the name

SoupDragon · 04/12/2020 09:02

I love the ones that come in a truckle with caramelised onion. I've had them from both Waitrose and Aldi with both being comparable.

M&S Cornish Cruncher

AdaColeman · 04/12/2020 09:04

Cornish Cruncher Cheddar from Marks & Spencer is the way to go. Easy to source, something a bit different but not too different. Delicious!

Nacreous · 04/12/2020 09:04

Black bomber (or they do a ruby one, ruby mist infused with port and brandy, or my favourite one is amber mist, infused with whisky).

I do like tickler if you want something easier to get from the supermarket though.

Cooltalkin · 04/12/2020 09:05

Came on to say black bomber ,,, was beaten to it
It’s on my Christmas cheese board

Cookerhood · 04/12/2020 09:07

I like Tickler too if you want an easy to get one that will go down well with a cheddar lover (I used to only like cheddar but an gradually expanding my horizons!).

Laffinalltheway · 04/12/2020 09:18

Wookey Hole! Not tried Black Bomber, must give it a try...

Side note, Wookey Hole caves are now owned by Gerry Cottle of circus fame.

LeSquigh · 04/12/2020 11:46

Sainsbury’s have the Black Bomber in a truckle. I saw it just yesterday.

Boringnamechanging · 04/12/2020 11:49

Black bomber

CockleburIck · 04/12/2020 12:29

Guess what? I came on to suggest Black Bomber!

I buy quite a few different Snowdonia trickles each Christmas. They’re lovely.

CockleburIck · 04/12/2020 12:30

*truckles!

teateateateateamoretea · 04/12/2020 12:31
