Hi does anyone have any suggestions or magic remedies on how to get rid of a cough?
I'm desperate

I'm following this as very interested to see if anyone has any magic remedies. My husband has been coughing for months now. Not Covid, he's been tested and has no other symptoms. He's had a chest x ray and its clear. He coughs about once every 5 minutes and it's very annoying.

These are so disgusting but they magically work. I always have them in my cupboard at home and my desk drawer at work.
There is a syrup but I’ve not tried that.

Thank you.
i'm so worried it'll turn into a cough that stays for weeks and is quite bad (because that's what happens with coughs isn't it?!) and so worried that my family won't want to have me for christmas if this happens.
just so worried
and i haven't had a cough for probably more than a year so i'm due one aren't I!!

Google “ginger wrap for cough”, I’m not sure how to do links but there’ll be a lot of information. You basically put some ginger and a few other things onto a gauze then strap it to your chest over night. Hope it gets sorted soon, coughs are so annoying.

Flowerblue · 03/12/2020 19:32

For non productive coughs- which I used to get a lot and which used to drag on for weeks, I took Pholcodine linctus and Ricola herb lozenges. Both excellent at dry tickly coughs.

purpleme12 · 03/12/2020 19:32

ok will put that on the shopping list too

InsideNo7 · 03/12/2020 19:33

Second phylocodeine- it’s great if you are struggling to sleep with the cough.

purpleme12 · 03/12/2020 19:34

Ah brilliant feel like putting them all on the list lol

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/12/2020 19:39

If you are going for pholcodeine to a pharmacy you may as well get proper codeine linctus, it's much better.

Assuming you've had a Covid test though? A lot of people who I know who've had Covid have had nothing but an annoying 'throat clearing' tickle that feels like it will turn into a proper cough but never actually does

purpleme12 · 03/12/2020 19:41

ok thank you. will have a look

i have had a covid test - even though i feel confident it's a normal cough or asthma cough- because i didn't know what to do and didn't know if should get a test. but it was one i had to do myself and i'm sure it will come back inconclusive or something and that is what worries me.

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 03/12/2020 19:42

I would say it is more than a throat clearing tickle. It is not a really bad cough yet however i am worried that it will get worse because when i get a cough (i assume it's the same with everyone else) it seems to stay for a long time.

OP posts:
purpleme12 · 03/12/2020 19:42

( and it feels like it's getting worse anyway)

OP posts:
thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/12/2020 19:53

@purpleme12 hopefully your test would come back negative. I just thought I'd say it just in case as I think a lot of people have been surprised how 'not a bad cough' their Covid cough is. Hope you feel better soon. Thanks

shinynewapple2020 · 03/12/2020 20:28

Following the suggestions here , I had a cold about 8 weeks ago and have had a cough ever since . I had a negative Covid test at the time it started .

icedaisy · 03/12/2020 20:34

@soontobeanana my Dd had a cough from October to April. Granted she was hammered last winter with various bugs. From Feb to April she just coughed but was other symptom free. Eventually the doctor prescribed two asthma inhalers, blue and brown to shift it. She took them under duress for less than a week and it was gone. I had tried everything else.

Nearly drove me crackers.

LaTomatina · 03/12/2020 20:39

For a dry cough, a square of dark chocolate melted slowly in the mouth works wonders...

Gohackyourself · 03/12/2020 20:40

Codeine linctus for me too.Only discovered it two years ago but it’s fab.
Also good old fashioned teaspoon of salt in half cup of salt water gargled hourly will kill any bacteria growing in throat/tonsils where the tickle is.
Please update us all, nobody ever comes back to update what worked !

makingmiracles · 03/12/2020 20:42

Or nighttime - night nurse- don’t take the full dose if you need to be up early-take 1/4 dose

Daytime- piriton

purpleme12 · 03/12/2020 20:42

@thenewaveragebear1983 thank you I can only hope so

@icedaisy I do have the blue inhaler anyway. It's not helping but that doesn't surprise me, once you've got a cough it's hard to go

OP posts:
makingmiracles · 03/12/2020 20:42

*piriton syrup, not the tablets!

EnjoyingTheSilence · 03/12/2020 20:43

Apparently Vicks on your feet works a treat. Have to say, I’ve not tried it though

CookieDoughKid · 03/12/2020 20:46

What kind of cough is it? I had a cough with a runny nose. Bought a dehumidifier and it went within an hour of the dehumidifier being on

gamerchick · 03/12/2020 20:47

Night nurse suppresses a cough.

Although the last I recommend that on here ,some strange person sent me some nutty PMs saying how irresponsible I was until I blocked them. 😁

Shieldingending · 03/12/2020 20:53

Going to try some of these remedies! DD and I both have a cough, negative covid tests but of course we feel like lepers everywhere we go !!
