Does it matter what people wear in a TEAMS meeting?

I expect this has been done but it's new to us, staff have been in work throughout and it's only now we have a lot of self isolators, so we had a team meeting via Teams, just keeping in touch and seeing how everyone is more than anything formal.

9am this morning. One man was in his dressing gown. Does it matter? It's been rather a talking point Grin

Well it depends on who is in the meetings, but I'd say a dressing gown is never appropriate! At the same time, probably you don't need to be as dressed up as in the office. I usually go for a hoody or jumper and make sure I've got makeup on, or if it's with someone external I'll put a nicer top on.

triceratops12 · 02/12/2020 20:42

We have people who don't switch their cameras on because they are in bed/in their nighties! I find it really odd and unprofessional.

WingBingo · 02/12/2020 20:43

Yuck. Not cool.

YouNeedASpaDay · 02/12/2020 20:49

A dressing gown is not cool and would definitely be noted in my 'office'. I often have just a jumper, no make up and hair in a bobble though. Would put make up on for an interview but wouldn't bother otherwise

WillSantaBeComingToTown · 02/12/2020 20:51

Shit, I say bikini not appropriate?

Was the dressing own to keep warm? Heating costs are significant for people working from home and not everyone can afford an oodie.

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 02/12/2020 20:53

I was accused of wearing PJs in ours, I wasn't, I was wearing comfy clothes that looked a bit like PJs. Everyone just laughed though.

Emmapeeler2 · 02/12/2020 20:54

I wrap a dressing gown round me for warmth but would definitely take it off for a video call. I always put my camera on, it's just more sociable. I don't dress up though. No make up, big jumper. I miss my office clothes.

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 02/12/2020 20:55

Omg I thought this was going to be do you need to be in business dress or casual!
I've very relaxed but a dressing gown is ridiculous even for an informal internal meeting, unless it was over proper clothes for warmth? My friend does that in the morning but she also shows us what she's wearing underneath!

Dyrne · 02/12/2020 20:56

Casual wear is fine for us, most of my team has been slobbing about in big cosy jumpers as they’re mostly of an age to resist putting the heating on. I also don’t care about hair/make up as long as they’re reasonably clean and tidy. I’d definitely raise an eyebrow at a dressing gown making an appearance, especially in the middle of the day! Maybe for a casual team check in first thing; but not for anything with other teams.

Scarby9 · 02/12/2020 20:57

We do office dress on top half (usually with a jumper now) - don't ask about the bottom half.

I usually have leggings and joggers, fluffy booties and a hot water bottle below camear height.

NeverRTFT · 02/12/2020 20:57

I accused someone of wearing a dressing gown in teams meeting, turned out to be sports top with wide collar which had flopped down and the camera cut it off at a place which just made it look like dressing gown, so I'm no longer casting aspersions on anyone

nosswith · 02/12/2020 20:58

Turn off the camera.

Agree you should be in day clothes as it were. Not dressing gown, the person who did this should have some self-respect.

JosephineDeBeauharnais · 02/12/2020 20:58

There’s a woman in one of my groups who wears a blouse, a suit jacket and her lanyard. Others, particularly during the summer, left an awful lot to be desired.

wirldsgonemad · 02/12/2020 20:58

Jeans and top (jumper or something I would wear in my day off is fine) I always wear make up but often just throw my hair back in a bobble rather than do it properly. Dressing gown not acceptable however that person should get leniency because they may know others who are zooming in their pjs all day and may have taken their lead. It's a still anew way of working for your team so there will be errors.

Spidey66 · 02/12/2020 20:59

I sometimes WFH and use Teams, if it's first thing I will always get dressed (though maybe not as well dressed as if I was in work) and brush my hair, at the least, even if I go and have a shower etc after the meeting.

I do think it's unprofessional not to. It takes 5 minutes.

OddBoots · 02/12/2020 21:00

Could it be that it was over regular clothes as he was cold?

BananaPop2020 · 02/12/2020 21:01

Cameras are non- negotiable for me as my manager insists on them. A dressing gown is completely inappropriate for a Teams meeting.

Springfern · 02/12/2020 21:03

Why are people wearing makeup to zoom? Shock

Dazedandconfused10 · 02/12/2020 21:05

Hoodies. But that's my standard uniform even in the office

GlowingOrb · 02/12/2020 21:08

Internal meetings, no one cares. The dress code at my big corporate job is shockingly casual. Shorts and flip flops are perfectly normal attire in the office.

For teams, as long as you have a shirt on you are good. We had someone turn his camera on without one, panic, hang up by mistake, then call back in quite sheepish but we laughed it off.

Client meetings are different.

RosesAndHellebores · 02/12/2020 21:13

From day one I have done hair, put a frock on and added make-up. I had to buy a pair of clogs because psychologically I can't work in slippers. It's part of my work routine and volume of work has been relentless.

We have regular meetings with internal and external stakeholders. I am disappointed that I have had to have words with people for wearing a onsie, smoking and in one or two cases just generally looking unprofessional. We have paid for people to upgrade broadband, etc, and shipped their desktops/laptops and it is expected cameras will be on.

Bearsbearsbears40 · 02/12/2020 21:16

I know of people who say they won’t put the camera on for very early meetings as they’re not dressed or showered yet. I find it so odd. I wear my work trousers at home (which are all reasonably comfy anyway), a top or smart t shirt and a cardigan, a lot like I would in the office. On Fridays I might swap for a jumper but not the slightly slobby one i’m wearing now to watch tv on the sofa. I haven’t been wearing make up since March but I’ve been trying to get back into it as I felt as though I was getting a bit too sloppy. But maybe it’s just me who is strange!

CupboardMonster · 02/12/2020 21:27

Nobody I work with (internal or external) would even consider turning up to a meeting in a dressing gown. I've had a blanket over my knees and a hot water bottle on my lap when I'm cold, both out of sight of the camera! When I've been having a bad day with pain I've still put a smart jumper on, brushed my hair and tied it back. Basic standards.

Stroller15 · 02/12/2020 21:38

Dressed from the middle up everything day since March. I also put make up on and slightly do my hair. I have never come across someone in a dressing gown. My boss insists on cameras on and I think it sets a professional standard that I'm looking presentable. Despite the fact only my comfy leggings fit me from the middle down nowadays!

pincertoe · 02/12/2020 21:41

It very much depends on who is in the meeting. I took a few over lock down in gym gear and all sweating after working out but by the end of lockdown (first time) i missed clothes and make up so made more effort.
