Does it matter what people wear in a TEAMS meeting?

I expect this has been done but it's new to us, staff have been in work throughout and it's only now we have a lot of self isolators, so we had a team meeting via Teams, just keeping in touch and seeing how everyone is more than anything formal.

9am this morning. One man was in his dressing gown. Does it matter? It's been rather a talking point Grin

@Springfern have you gone on zoom / teams without make up.?
It shows up every imperfection and makes even the freshest faces look exhausted.
If anything I wear more make up than actually in the office

Sally872 · 03/12/2020 07:22

I wouldn't wear a dressing gown for teams meeting, but I wouldn't care if someone else did.

vroc81 · 03/12/2020 07:29

Yuk no. One person dropped into our weekly teams meeting while furloughed in a dressing gown. They were furloughed so they didn’t have to but we always started with a quick catch up for anyone that wanted to chat - I actually think it was worse they joined in (and think not small man in mums pink gown... Hmm) than not joining in at all - and confirmed the lack of respect they have for me (boss) and the team..

And yet they were dressed 20 minutes later for the monthly all company catch up - wonder why the directors got clothes...?

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 03/12/2020 07:29

Just our weekly team meeting - casual wear is fine, but people would wear that to the workplace depending on what they have on that day. For anything with external people, or people outside our immediate team, no leisurewear - smart clothing.

icelollycraving · 03/12/2020 07:33

I do my hair and makeup and wear something comfy but smart. My colleague was sat on her sofa and was wearing a vest top (hot summer’s day) she had shut her curtains to see the screen better. I got a text asking if she was in bed.
I’m assuming oodie was hoody? 😁

BogRollBOGOF · 03/12/2020 07:34

When I used to teach in unpredictably heated classrooms, my favourite garment was my calf length cardigan that could layer over my usual v-neck jumper.
It was not unlike a (smart) zipped dressing gown and kept my legs warmer

JazzRiff · 03/12/2020 07:51

LOL at the lanyard wearer.

No one I work with would consider it remotely ok to undertake a work meeting in a dressing gown. And I work in the arts.

Surely if people are cold it is best to get properly dressed, in layers, with a jumper or fleece? Fleece blanket over your legs.

Is everyone claiming the WFH tax allowance to cover the extra costs?

PinkPlantCase · 03/12/2020 07:53

Where I work most people wear they same tops/shirts as they would in the office. We have some difficulty with what people wear at assistant level.

If we have a external meeting I have to remind mine to put on a smart jumper.

There have been days where they clearly haven’t done their hair or shaved (when they normally would) I don’t generally mention that. If they work hard I’m happy.

pinkbalconyrailing · 03/12/2020 07:53

dressed up nicely on the top for video meeting.
but as soon as the camera is off I put the dressing gown on top to keep warm.

LooneyLovefood · 03/12/2020 08:00

I worked from home pre-COVID and regularly have Skype/Teams/Zoom calls with my nation wide team. Most people wear quite casual clothes, there are a few who dress a bit smarter but joining a call in pjs, a dressing gown or "still in bed" is not something I've come across in normal circumstances.

I have only once joined a call from my bed and it was when I was really unwell but there was an incredibly important call I had to dial into. I kept my camera off and gave a brief explanation as to why - would never have done it if I wasn't really unwell though. I did also once have a call with my line manager when she was in her dressing gown and I was in my pjs but it was a completely impromptu call to solve a quick emergency that popped up out of the blue - if it had been a planned call, we would both have had actual clothes on.

If I don't have calls booked in and I've started work really early, I'll often work in my pjs but thrown on a jumper if I have a call so it at least looks like I've made an effort.

namechangeforfriday · 03/12/2020 08:09

I don’t think it matters at all for internal meetings. Wearing a dressing gown doesn’t impact your ability to do work. Sometimes I don’t get dressed all day, my colleagues join zoom meetings from bed with their laptop on their lap. I don’t see the problem as long as we’re doing the work. The boss clearly doesn’t mind as we’ve been wfh since March and nobody’s been told off

DoTheNextRightThing · 03/12/2020 08:11

I wear my dressing gown to meetings most days. It's bloody cold in my house. That said, it's black and as long as I don't put the hood up, it just looks like a thick black jumper from the small part you see on camera.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/12/2020 08:41

Day clothes with a jumper/fleece/hoodie if cold as a minimum. Smartly dressed if important/external people are on the call. Cameras should be on.

Have googled 'oodie' as it was intrigued. I had started imagining people were starting to write in phonetic Yorkshire dialect, which sounds rather unlikely.

I now discover that it appears to be a giant knee length hoodie, with a large pocket that would nicely suit a cat or couple of kittens. So therefore I need one right now.

MrsJBaptiste · 03/12/2020 08:44

I've never seen anyone in a dressing gown on a Teams meeting, informal or not! Loads of people wear hoodies and thick jumpers but not nightwear!

I still get up at 6.30 to get in the shower, get dressed and put make up on for an 8am start. I can have meetings any time after 8am so need to be good to go Smile

I thought it would be more chilled working from home but I've found myself working 8-5 (rather than 9-5) and have far more meetings than I ever did in the office. Understandable I suppose as you can't just wheel down to the next desk to check something!

Scarby9 · 03/12/2020 09:42

One of our trainees turned up on Zoom ina dressing gown. I told him he had 5 minutes to dress.

Almostslimjim · 03/12/2020 12:56

Surely if people are cold it is best to get properly dressed, in layers, with a jumper or fleece? Fleece blanket over your legs.

I usually have a vest, long sleeve t shirt, jumper and hoody on. I'm usually still cold and have a blanket on my legs AND my dressing gown on! But I usually work in a hospital where it is hotter than the fires of hell inside.

escondida · 03/12/2020 13:02

I don't want to see anyone's hairy chest or hints of boobies. Don't object to dressing gown otherwise. Camera is off for most of our meetings so then folk can be starkers for all I care.

thecatsthecats · 03/12/2020 13:26

Our customer base were voted the worst dressed profession a few years back, which is harsh, but more or less true when it comes to "smartness".

So we're fine in casual clothes, and I ask staff to err on the side of plain clothing (bright colours can interfere with webcam).

I'm the opposite of some posters in that I feel stifled and uncreative in traditional work wear. I'm much more productive in my own wardrobe.

DelurkingAJ · 03/12/2020 13:44

Our broadband isn’t sufficiently stable to guarantee I can have my camera on (and I couldn’t at all when DH was also WFH) but I am always dressed. I have noticed that the senior people are getting more casually dressed as time goes on (we were already dress down in the office but suits were the order of the day for Board Meetings whereas the last one there wasn’t a tie to be seen!).

DominaShantotto · 03/12/2020 14:34

Oodie at the moment here - it's bloody freezing (I'm in the conservatory as the only real viable space to be) - I'll take it off for my next call but that's because I'm on our placement substitute learning today so expected to dress smartly for that. Normal uni lectures though - fuck it - I'll take the hood down so I don't look like the grim reaper but I'm not doing being cold.

Background full of clutter at the moment so blurred as best as I can. Think it's not really acceptable to be making demands of people's entire houses to have an artistically arranged stunt bookshelf when you're basically invading the office into their homes. There's usually a couple of dog paws waving into shot as well as the greyhound likes to lie upside down on the sofa behind me. I tend to just play dog jenga as the day goes on and see how many pillows I can stack on her before she moves and topples them.

NovemberR · 03/12/2020 14:37

Wow. It would be frowned on in my work. Office smart/casual on the top half. Warm jogging bottoms on at a push. But I'd not want to be seen by co-workers and line manager in my dressing gown.

I think that's pretty bad, to be honest. If you've got the type of job where you are required to attend meetings then I think you need to show a bit of professionalism about it.

Chickenwing · 03/12/2020 15:43

I wear pyjamas and a dressing gown every day. My team dont turn thier cameras on.

When on a call where I need to turn my camera on I will swap the dressing gown for a jumper and shove on some makeup- but it feels like such a faff now.

TransplantedScouser · 03/12/2020 15:48

When we had the heatwave in summer, I did a couple stark bollock naked in front of a fan - no video obviously.

MadameMinimes · 03/12/2020 16:13

Dressing gown is definitely not OK. I’m a teacher, so back at school now, but during lockdown I’d say people tended to dress like it was an INSET day. I’d wear jeans or leggings on my bottom and then casual-ish tops. Most of my colleagues did the same. One AHT wore a suit for the first couple of SLT meetings we did and then after that we were all fairly casual. Nobody was in their dressing gown or gym clothes though. For online parents evenings and big events and presentations I wear business dress and the expectation is that staff are as smart as they would be in school.

So what?

I’ve worn make-up twice since March.

I have however worn decent casual clothing throughout that I could have worn in the office - where I rarely wear make up either.
