Weighted blanket for an adult?

SeaSunMoon · 30/11/2020 12:49

Looking for a weighted blanket for an adult, to help with sleep and anxiety. Any suggestions? Looking for a decent one, not bargain but I’ve no idea where to start. For weight/size/warmth etc?

Anyone?

Gravity blanket comes out best in one recommendation website?

I got my mum the John Lewis one and she really likes it. They say to go for one that weighs about 10% of your body weight but I sized down as she's not very strong (health issues). Can't really compare it to anything else as it's the only one she's used.

Thanks, just had a look at the John Lewis one, was about to order but I think I want one that is washable or has a washable cover. If they exist!

Got one from Amazon a few months back... love it

SeaSunMoon · 03/12/2020 11:52

Which one @Redtartanshoes?
I’ve seen gravity and kalm koala through google

I’ve been looking for one too but one that has a washable cover.

Dyno · 03/12/2020 12:19

I have one, love it - mine was for restless / shaky legs, anxiety and to improve my sleep.

TurquoiseDragon · 03/12/2020 12:24

I have a blanket, but I decided I wasn't forking out for expensive covers in crap colours. My blanket is 153cm by 203 cm, so just a little too long to fit a double duvet cover.

So I got a couple of cheap king size duvet sets in the colours I wanted and sewed/cut down one side to make covers. Excess fabric is allocated for me to line a bag I'm making, so isn't being wasted.

I have recently got a mela. It's good. But at 7kg it feels sooo heavy. I would say I do toss and turn much less. Probably because I can't move! Grin

TurquoiseDragon · 03/12/2020 12:44

Mine's a 9kg blanket, and feels great, just drapes around me, making me so relaxed.

You need a blanket that is between 7% to 12% of your body weight. I went for one that's at the lower end of this range for me, so that as I lose weight, it still meets the percentage (yes, I'm fat).

thesoundofthepolice · 03/12/2020 12:54

I have one from Amazon at 9kg. The whole thing is washable not that I'd risk it in my own machine I'd probably take it to a laundrette.
I'm on the fence about it, I got it for poor/restless sleep but I've not noticed that much difference. I think would prefer it to be heavier; I went 10% of body weight which it is slightly over but it doesn't feel overly heavy.

spoonrace · 03/12/2020 13:34

I wish I'd gone for over 10% too (mine is 6kg), I like it but I'd like it to be heavier.

SeaSunMoon · 03/12/2020 14:53

Thanks, now trying to decide on whether to get a single size one for him or a king for our bed etc.

@Elisheva they seem very cheap compared to the other companies looking at around £120? Have you got one?

DD(16) has a Koala weighted blanked and absolutely loves it. They have a weight checker on their website to let you know which weight is best and what looks like an extra Black Friday discount still available.

TheTeenageYears · 03/12/2020 15:51

Oh, one thing I noticed when researching was the physical size varied quite a lot between brands so double check that - I didn't want to buy one that would allow cold air in every time DD turned over. When she got it she described it as feeling lug she was being hugged.

Elisheva · 03/12/2020 16:34

Yes, I’ve bought Ds one for Xmas. I’m impressed with the quality.

Elisheva · 03/12/2020 16:36

The teddy fleece one looks lovely if you want warmth as well.

SeaSunMoon · 04/12/2020 00:37

@TheTeenageYears did you go for the larger of the 2 sizes of the koala?

OP posts:
VanGoghsDog · 04/12/2020 00:44

I got the Highams one linked above and a lady in the village made me a cover for it from a duvet cover I bought (you need buttons to link into the tabs). I find it fine, it's 6kg I think, the heavier one was out of stock.

It makes me too hot sometimes though. But I am a woman of a certain age!

TheTeenageYears · 04/12/2020 08:17

@SeaSunMoon I bought the smaller of the two Koala sizes for a single bed. It seemed to be the closest in width to a standard UK single quilt. I'm sure some of the others were another 6 inches narrower but can't remember which ones.

TurquoiseDragon · 04/12/2020 11:14

@SeaSunMoon

Thanks, now trying to decide on whether to get a single size one for him or a king for our bed etc.
Check the actual sizes in the small print. Weighted blankets are actually intended for use by one person, so tend to be sized to the person, not the bed size.
