Requests for unusual Christmas presents

DPotter · 29/11/2020 17:43

Last week I asked DD 21yrs, for ideas for Christmas presents. She's just come back to me with .....reusuable period pads. Environmental consciouness. Great, wonderful, social responsible.

I just got a fit of giggles, resulting in coughing thinking of her father's face when she opened them on Christmas morning. Suppose i should be grateful the grandparents wont be here this Christmas!

Grin Dd asked for bluetac for a few years in a row.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/11/2020 18:15

Great idea. You could maybe get her some reusable face wipes/food pouches too?

CovidAnni · 29/11/2020 18:22

Great idea- I gave same to dd last year in her stocking. You’ve reminded me how sheltered and different the world was a couple of generations ago. Back at school in January, we all talked in mortified, hushed tones about poor Kirsty McD, whose aunt had given her a bra which she’d opened in front of the whole family 🤦🏻‍♀️😳

@Joditaylorfan

Grin Dd asked for bluetac for a few years in a row.
One of mine does that, he has autism and loves blu tac.
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/11/2020 18:28

I still remember my aunty giving me the most beautiful peach lace bra when I was 13. Much more beautiful than anything my mum would have chosen.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 29/11/2020 18:29

Ask her if she would prefer to have them separately I you are worried about embarrassment.

My are still young. At 2yo my youngest asked for toy numbers. She's now 7 and asked for a sleeping bag suitable for winter camping. Her sister (9yo) wants carrots.

Lovelydovey · 29/11/2020 18:33

DC2 wants a jar of homemade raspberry jam. Not happening as they’re out of season. Still better than the time he asked Santa to be older than DC1.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/11/2020 18:35

I think the year the youngest asked for a fake hearing aid was our weirdest!

Champagneforeveryone · 29/11/2020 18:44

DS has actually asked for pants.

He's 16 and has been given his child benefit money, on the proviso that he budgets for everything he needs (though we still pay for his phone and gym membership) The price of decent pants, plain t-shirts for work and PJ bottoms was a massive shock to him Grin

DPotter · 30/11/2020 10:32

Good idea about the reusable facewipes - which may also be a good idea for my various nieces!

To be fair I also have a history for asking for weird things for Christmas; I asked DP for a metal dustbin a few years back - for my pottery ! That raised an eyebrow, but only cost him £25.

Someonesayroadtrip my youngest is also autistic, and has a liking for blu tac. So much so I’ve put some in his advent calendar! He asked for a mason jar last birthday, which his aunt got for him. He still declares it the best present ever!

DPotter · 30/11/2020 10:36

I'm not worried about causing DP embarrassment, and DD isn't worried about that either. He's a medic so can be quite blunt about bodily functions, but the idea of sanitary pads wrapped up in Christmas paper!

My daughter was slightly obsessed with salad cream

When she was little, several years in a row she Father Christmas for salad cream

He always obliged

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 30/11/2020 10:40

DS has randomly asked for, over the years:

Ancestry DNA test
Catering sized block of cheese
Screwdriver
Coffee sachets
Camouflage make up (for cadets)
Mess tins

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 30/11/2020 10:41

@Champagneforeveryone DS has asked for socks and pants every year since he was little. He is now an adult and still has a penchant for jazzy socks and boxers!

Bubbletrouble43 · 30/11/2020 10:43

My 3yo dd has asked for ( inspired by halloween I suspect) a real live bat.

SockDrawer · 30/11/2020 10:48

How sensible of your DD @DPotter !

I agree with @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie in that I bet she’d like other environmentally conscious things too. Etsy have some really nice beeswax wraps for food.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 30/11/2020 10:52

@DPotter if she wants reusable pads she may also like period pants (for example Modibodi), a reusable coffee cup, a flask or Chillys bottle, reusable face washing pads/face cloths that are microfiber, beeswax wrap, carry around utensils for eating takeout food or food at work (I have many of these things and use them all )

FAQs · 30/11/2020 10:55

I thought some of these looked really nice @DPotter www.boots.com/bbc-earth

My six year old wants 'a cooking dragon and two toilet dragons'.

Girlzroolz · 30/11/2020 11:06

Oooooo now I want a toilet dragon too! Grin

mylittleyumyum · 30/11/2020 11:08

Floral foam. So she could crush it and film it in slow motion.

I never bought it.

Wyntersdiary · 30/11/2020 11:31

when i was a kid i asked my mum for a pack of frozen peas and a pen :S

No idea what i was thinking

haba · 30/11/2020 11:58

My two (also both with asd) ask for blutak every year. I have no idea what they have done with all the blutak they've had over the years- they're 11 and 14, that's quite a lot of blutak.
DD was the type of small child that asks for colouring pencils, or paper, but DS always comes out with something impossible- a thing that's round and plays music (ooh- a record, you're thinking...) and flies.
Playmobil Lego figures were also something he asked for repeatedly. (He basically wanted Lego Star wars people but bigger, to put in the campervan!)

Wobbitcatcher · 30/11/2020 12:17

Have you seen how beautiful some pads are! Look at craftymrsB she uses lovely fabrics to make them and does knickers too
