How much annual leave are you taking over Christmas?

I'm taking Christmas week off - was originally going to just take those days but now my work is shutting down the week of New Year also. So I'm considering now making it a proper big break after a crappy year and also booking off the week before Christmas too which would be 3 weeks in total. I know I'm really lucky to be able to do this - I've saved a lot of annual leave due to the pandemic, but it leaves me with only a few days left until the end of March so I'm a bit iffy about it.

What's everyone else taking off over Christmas, if you're able to take leave?

I only have about 2 days annual leave because i just started a new job, saving them incase childcare cover falls through (nursery breaks up 11th). Office shuts down between Christmas and New Years though so I have that off "free"

MaverickDanger · 29/11/2020 16:40

I’d normally take off 21st Dec - 4th Jan.

This year I’m on mat leave and last year I had 3.5 weeks off in December to visit family in Australia. Probably won’t work next December either with how mat leave & holiday etc falls!

DH’s leave is a bit up in the air depending on when the baby arrives.

pincertoe · 29/11/2020 16:43

I work in a school (although full time so don't get all school holidays) but I always take the full two weeks off at Christmas.

ICU nurse. None, it's not allowed for clinical staff. As a colleague said, this virus has more days off over Christmas than we do!

Cwenthryth · 29/11/2020 16:53

None, we’re not able to as there are so few locums available. However as I’ve already done my bank holiday commitment earlier this year & the rota just happens to land on a weekend off, I am off anyway from midday on the 24th and not back until 29th, which feels like practically forever to me!

KateF · 29/11/2020 16:55

I work in a nursery. We close at 4 on Christmas Eve then usually have Christmas Day and Boxing Day off. This year we get a lovely long weekend as have the Monday off since Boxing Day falls on a Saturday 🙂
We then close early on NYEve and have NYDay off. If we're quiet we take turns to finish early but it's a bit random so can't plan anything.

PaperMonster · 29/11/2020 16:55

None. My work place is closed for two weeks which is in addition to our leave entitlement.

Hellohah · 29/11/2020 16:57

We get 2 full weeks. Finish on the 18th Dec and go back in on the 4th Jan.
Not taking any extra because I always struggle the first few weeks back at Christmas

CloudyVanilla · 29/11/2020 16:58

My DD breaks up for school on the 11th so will change my hours for the 14th - 18th so I start and finish early as I don't have to factor in the school run and I WFH so that will be nice.

I've then managed to book off the week 21st 24th and the rest is closure days or bank holidays right through to the 4th January

NickMarlow · 29/11/2020 17:01

I work for a church. I was able to take Sunday 27th December off this year, and my contributions for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day will be filmed in advance. So I get 13 days off in a row, the longest I've had at Christmas for 14 years.

...and as much as I'm looking forward to the break with my family, I will miss the Christmas services so much!

Friendshighschool · 29/11/2020 17:01

We close on 23rd and open on 5th. Partly annual leave and partly on the firm.

PhilCornwall1 · 29/11/2020 17:01

Just shy of 3 weeks and carrying over 5 days into next year's allowance.

wendz86 · 29/11/2020 17:02

Don't need to use any annual leave as we get between 24th Dec and 2nd Jan off anyway.

Bearsbearsbears40 · 29/11/2020 17:03

I was due to work until 23rd dec then back in on 4th jan, so I’d booked 4th and 5th to have a bit longer a break after the new year (higher education, non academic). But, our uni has now given us the extra 3 days off before Christmas so we finish on Friday 18th for two weeks, plus my annual leave so nearly two and a half weeks. I’ll probably do a day or so of work in the holidays, but I can do that on a day of my choosing (just catching up on some of the finances, updating spreadsheets, website etc). I am very much looking forward to a break knowing it will make me so much more productive next year after a good break (and hopefully next year will be a bit easier than this one!)

Ruddyfedup · 29/11/2020 17:05

I got left out of the annual leave selections between now and april 2022 while i was on ML so i had to fight for what ive got. I managed to get 16th and 18th off, 25th and 1st jan. Next year however ive got nothing throughout the year

haircutsRus · 29/11/2020 17:05

My employer shuts down between Christmas and New Year, so I finish on the 24th and go back on the 3rd Jan. Apart from the 3 bank holidays it has to come out my annual leave though.

lockeddownandcrazy · 29/11/2020 17:11

As little as possible as its just wasted (for us)to take at this time of year with the covid situation. Better to save till easter when it should be nicer weather and able to go out.

MrsDThomas · 29/11/2020 17:17

Off Christmas eve till the 30th. I offered to work 30/31 so I could have Christmas eve off. Back on the 4th

Shadow01 · 29/11/2020 17:22

Just Xmas day off for me - retail here too.

winterinmadeira · 29/11/2020 17:25

I’ve booked Christmas Eve off and then back in after the statutory bank hols. The team I work in all have time off and so I’m holding the fort.

hopeishere · 29/11/2020 17:26

I'm off for two weeks. Can't wait. Do wonder if having been wfh since March if it will be hard to switch off plus my work is related to whatever is happening in the news so that might be tricky too.

I've always liked a long Christmas break. I had to go in once as my colleague was off and I really hated it. I mostly surfed the net. Went it late and left early.

jambeforeclottedcream · 29/11/2020 17:35

2 weeks. Working extra over the half terms to make up for it. Work in a school but have to work 12 days throughout the holidays

WalesStar · 29/11/2020 17:37

I’m finishing at 1pm on the 16th December then back on the 4th January. I realise I’m lucky and this is my first job where I’ve been able to have all of Xmas off and I can’t wait!!!

MirandaMarple · 29/11/2020 17:37

I had 12 days booked. I'm still furloughed though. It doesn't go back into my leave pot either, but I'm not bothered. I've not worked since March and have still had an income. I have nothing to complain about.

Throwntothewolves · 29/11/2020 17:38

None, I'm working. Thankfully I'm on nightshift on Christmas day so I can spend the day with my family though.
