Do you enjoy watching cookery shows?

I like watching them -only if nothing else is on.

I like James Martin and Mary Berry.

But Nigella, Jamie Oliver and Nadya, they’re too much. Too many ingredients, nothing basic.

And why do cooks drown food in so much olive oil?

I maybe old fashioned and prefer my gran’s cooking🤷🏼‍♀️

I always watch The Pioneer Woman. It's American but she always makes really nice simple hearty food 😋

DrDavidBanner · 28/11/2020 13:25

Cookery shows are great comfort tv aren't they? I did love Rachel Khoo and Bake Off, but Barefoot Contessa with her love of budder and Jeffery does have a special place in my heart. ☺

MrsDThomas · 28/11/2020 13:36

Oh Delia’s Christmas episodes!

Prunes in Armagnac! Remember mum making them and they were vile!

@Plonque

I personally love watching The Pioneer Woman, although I have never attempted any of her recipes. I often find myself watching food network and if you leave it on in the background long enough, Man vs Food comes on, which is my true guilty pleasure Grin
I preferred the old presenter of Man V Food, though, the one who had to retire before he died of fatty liver.

I’ve forgotten one of my favourite, though awful, US cooking shows — The Barefoot Contessa, which is all ‘Throw nine gallons of heavy cream at it’ and Geoffrey (is it Geoffrey?) the husband, and the strange friends who come over for dinner?

I know Mary Berry has a long history in cookery — I have an ancient Aga book of hers — but she seems to have only become the nation’s favourite granny since GBBO, which I never understand, as her persona is objectively quite scary — not sure why she got to be everyone’s cutesy granny while Paul Hollywood got to be scary judge.

He’s just a mildly pleased with himself breadmaking petrolhead, she’s got that steely blue stare, helmet hair and impeccable Elder Stateswoman standards.

She always reminds me of the Dean in Legally Blonde who tells Elle Woods that if she lets the sexual harassment of her boss stop her, she’s not the girl she thought she was.

Lobsterquadrille2 · 28/11/2020 13:40

Joining the Rachel Khoo love. I remember one episode where she made something amazing with reblochon; I'd never even heard of it. Otherwise I watch Bake Off and that's it.

Plonque · 28/11/2020 13:58

I much prefer the old Man vs Food presenter too! Adam Richman is his name, I follow him on social. He did lose a tonne of weight but it appears to have crept back up. He admitted that he needed to stop for his health, and I can definitely see why - some of those challenges are just inexplicable.
I don't rate the new one half as much, he tries too hard and comes across as a bit wooden and childish. But I will still watch it

RedRiverHog · 28/11/2020 14:00

I love Pioneer Woman! I want a life of ranch houses and many dogs and so much land. And Ina Garten in the Hamptons with her gay friends arranging her table and Geoffrey eating her chicken!

TreacleHart · 28/11/2020 14:04

I like the gentleness of Nigel Slater . I also watch GBBO . Nigella meh , Saturday morning kitchen meh . Used to enjoy Hairy Bikers but they have also become meh .

DreadingSeason2020sFinale · 28/11/2020 14:05

I do. My 8yo DS loved them. But he hates the Barefoot Contessa (?) and the younger American lady with the red hair. According to him (and me), they'll just chuck anything in.

"Do you you like Ranch dressing? Let's put some in!. Who doesn't love chocolate?! Let's throw in this box of brownie mix too!. Now, what about pickles? I love pickles so I couldn't leave those out!!".
Basically, if you like these things they should ALL go in. Doesn't matter if it's like a slops bucket at the end. If you throw all your favourites in the one recipe it must be a treat. Right?

Reader: it is not. It's just a mish mash of stuff thrown together.

I used to like old school Jamie shows. He did great food we could all do too. He still does the "look how down to Earth I am with my easy everyday dishes with what's on your cupboard!" But then his list of ingredients is mental. No Jamie. Sadly my everyday store cupboard doesn't have tonka beans, matsutake mushrooms or Peruvian yak's milk! And no, not a chance my local Tesco has em. Sorry mate. The Asian food aisle here is instant noodles and Blue Dragon soy sauce.

Mary Berry is great and I can crack on with almost all the Hairy Biker's stuff. Those fellas make proper grub!

RedRiverHog · 28/11/2020 14:08

I used to like Jamie too but everything I watch with him lately has him putting everything in a big board. I like plates!

I have enjoyed watching his old Christmas shows the last few days though.

DreadingSeason2020sFinale · 28/11/2020 14:11

Oh yeah, the chopping board or slate thing. What's so wrong with a plate? You'd think Jamie would like a plate over serving on a chopping board. How can a chopping board hold in the tidal wave of olive oil he uses?

NiceGerbil · 28/11/2020 14:12

Floyd?

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/11/2020 14:37

No it’s all too ponder and too involved. I like the cooking demonstrations on eat well for less because it’s 5hings I’d actually cook.

ADelicateFlower · 28/11/2020 14:51

Just realised I really do not like Paul thingy with the blue eyes on the baking one. I hate cakes though, so maybe that’s why. Also not keen on Jamie Oliver.

What I LOVE though, is on Gogglebox when they watch these shows. Hysterical! 😂😂😂

Ginfordinner · 28/11/2020 15:01

There is something about Nigel Slater's face that I find really seedy and creepy. I can't really describe it. I still like his recipes though.

Those of you complaining about the number of ingredients Jamie Oliver uses - can I recommend hid 5 Ingredients recipe book. I have made quite a few things, and they really do taste better then the sum of their parts.

I enjoy watching Nigella, even though there is nothing she has made in the current series so far that I would want to make.

Needhelp101 · 28/11/2020 16:18

I love them. Find them so comforting (although watching them costs me a fortune as, obviously, Nigella has a mezzaluna, so I have to order one too 😁)

grisen · 28/11/2020 16:31

Me and my partner absolutely love anything with Alton Brown, especially Cutthroat Kitchen!

Ginfordinner · 28/11/2020 16:42

I have never heard of Alton Brown. Off for a quick google.

MustardMitt · 28/11/2020 17:18

I like some. I used to watch them quite frequently - I liked the Rachel Khoo one mentioned, as well as two different ladies doing Indian and Chinese respectively. I can’t remember their name this must be 7 or 8 years ago now?!

Nowadays I prefer to watch shorter clips on Facebook of recipes that pique my interest rather than a whole programme. I used to like Nigella back in her Bites days but haven’t really watched since.

Ginfordinner · 28/11/2020 17:20

I watch quite a lot of the Facebook videos as well.

DressingGownofDoom · 28/11/2020 17:22

The ones I enjoy watching and the ones whose food I want to eat are two different things. I love watching Nigella, Lorraine Pascal, Jamie, and my absolute fav was Gordon Ramseys F word, it was a brilliant show.

The food I would like to eat though is Tom Kerridge (pre diet) and James Martin Blush

Laiste · 28/11/2020 17:22

Love them.

Only one i won't watch is Jamie Oliver.

BUT
I AM SO SICK OF EVERYONE PUTTING CHILLI IN EVERY.FUCKING.DISH

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 28/11/2020 17:25

James Martin is on pretty much 24/7 in this house... It's James on a beach! In a mini! With a dog! On a boat! Etc Grin

Hooked on GBBO but can take or leave most of the others. I used to love Delia's programmes, wish she was still on! And KF is a legend.

DressingGownofDoom · 28/11/2020 17:26

Oh and I love watching Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall even though I have heard some rumours of him doing sort of unsavoury and strange things.

HmmSureJan · 28/11/2020 17:26

Yes,except Nigella. I don't like most of the food and honestly don't want to see her stuffing her face after every dish. Puts me right off.
